Tirunelveli: A police sub inspector who died after being attacked by a gang in Tirunelveli district on Thursday allegedly failed to get help from two ministers who were passing by in their cavalcade.
Police said R Vetrivel, 44, was a victim of mistaken identity and the assailants were after another police officer. The gang threw crude bombs at Vetrivel, severely injuring his right leg. Vetrivel was then attacked with sickles, suffering deep injuries on his neck and head.
Tamil Nadu Public Health Minister M R K Panneerselvam and Minister for Environment, Youth Welfare and Sports T P M Moideen Khan who were passing by in their cavalcade allegedly failed to save Vetrivel.
The Ministers' security escort allegedly failed to intervene in time and apprehend the attackers.
Tamil Nadu Health Secretary V K Subburaj rejected allegations that the Ministers failed to help Vetrivel. “That is absolutely wrong news. It happened so that when our convoy reached the place the incident happened--a bomb blasted and a man was lying with blood all over his body. One escort team ran and chased the culprits,” said Subburaj.
He claimed security officials with the ministers did not go near Vetrivel for “two to three minutes” because they feared there could be bombs. "Everything was done to help this person (Vetrivel) and submit him in a hospital," he said.
Local media reports say the gang was contracted to kill Sub Inspector Sivasubramaniam but he was away on a pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
A report in The Hindu says Vetrivel was given a double promotion for his service in the Special Task Force that hunted down brigand Veerappan.
