The resolution reflects the sense of the U.S. Congress and it does not has any legislative implications on the Obama administration.
A resolution has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives supporting India’s bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council, with the lawmakers saying a permanent spot for the country on the Council would strengthen democracy around the world.

The resolution was introduced on Wednesday in the House by Congressman Frank Pallone, the co-founder of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans and Congressman Ami Bera, the only Indian-American in the Congress and current co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans.

India is the only country which has been endorsed by the Obama administration for a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

“At a time when international relations are being redefined, we should acknowledge and empower those nations that share our enduring core values,” Mr. Pallone said in a statement after he introduced the bill in the House.

“It’s in the interests of the United States and the world to have a UN Security Council whose members combine military strength with respect for democracy and pluralism, and an appreciation of the dangers posed by rouge states and terrorist groups,” he said.

Last week, Mr. Pallone and Mr. Bera applauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to strengthen ties between the U.S. and India during a speech before a joint session of Congress.

“I was honoured to meet with Prime Minister Modi during his visit and I am more committed than ever to the bond between our two nations share and the positive impact that India would have on the UN Security Council,” said Mr. Pallone, who along with Mr. Bera served on the escort committee that led Mr. Modi into the House chamber for the speech.

“As the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy, the United States and India share common values and a growing partnership on many fronts, especially on defence cooperation,” said Mr. Bera.

“India plays a critical role as a strategic partner to the United States, and as a pillar of stability in South Asia.

Securing a permanent spot for India on the UN Security Council would be beneficial for India and the United States, and would strengthen democracy around the world,” he said.

In a statement Mr. Pallone and Mr. Bera said the UN Security Council still reflects the world as it was in 1945 when the United Nations was created. Despite the fact that the UN has grown from 51 member nations at its inception to nearly 200, the Security Council has not grown to reflect these dramatic changes, they said.

There are currently five permanent members of the Council including the U.S., the UK, Russia, China, and France.

The resolution reflects the sense of the U.S. Congress and it does not has any legislative implications on the Obama administration.

I gonna see when we become member.
US, Russia and China together blown up our bid last time.
All countries except one will support us for UNSC seat. You know which country I'm talking about. Anyway, looks like we can see it happening sooner than expected.

Well, if that country is China (inside the UNSC) only then a problem.

We need support of a half UN members and all the five UNSC members for UNSC.
And we have already support from 60-70 countries

That's for sure. China won't agree easily. I wonder how the security council works though. There are countries in UNSC which are already virtually at war with each other. If they have internal problems, how the hell are they supposed to be the "security council" ?

Why not?

Foggy Bottom still sees us an old Soviet Relic and Friend of Russia. In all history of UN, India has found itself more on the opposite side of US. Bureaucracy does not forget(irrespective of country).
Just check even after so called Modi Obama bonhomie, no of agreements stalled by US, pertaining to terror co-operation.

India has always been on the opposite side of US. But if US hopes to counter china, India is the only option. It cannot achieve much with Japan. Russia is also with China here.

What makes you not think, that US is not running with hare and hunting with hounds? Have you seen any flight of US industries from china? No? That should tell you US will not rock the boat too much.

You can't expect them to completely severe all ties immediately. No country does that. Taking that as a sign is a mistake.

Sorry Kshtariya87, this nation was war gaming to attack India on behalf of Pakistan, lest India declares another Parakram kind of operation. Indians are naive to believe that US will do something for India which goes against Its own interests. India in UNSC is not in US interests period!

Of course nobody trusts them. I know I don't. In 62 they were helping India to fight China. In 71 they were helping pakistan to fight India. They also went to China and asked them to mobilise their forces near Indian border in 71.

They are like monkeys jumping from tree to tree. They made pakistan an ally to counter China's communism. Hence they wanted to protect pakistan irrespective of the genocide in bangladesh. But for protecting pakistan they were willing to make China as an ally to counter India. It just goes in circles.

But this is exactly the reason why they will be willing to support us. It is in their interests to counter China. Hence it is in their interests to work with India. In order to work with India, they have to give us some incentives. Those incentives being, predators, NSG, UNSC etc.

1962: You are again naive that they helped India. Infact, I don't remember the article, but it was mentioned that British& US wanted India to get thrashed a bit, to tone down Nehru's haughtiness.
They were war gaming to attack India and denuke it in 2004. And they were doing these plans few months after Naun do Gyarah in 2002.

You may get Predators. You may get NSG. But UNSC, India should not keep its hope high. India should strengthen its economy and defense, that if its bid is rejected, it should resign from UN.

UNSC support is just a dangling carrot in front of India.

The biggest enemy of US at the time was Communism. In order to prevent the spread of communism, they were helping India but not as much as needed to win the war.

Of course they play double games. There's no doubt about that. I repeat, we should not trust them or become their permanent ally. Like I've said in some other threads, Saddam/Gaddafi etc. were US friends once upon a time. But when they outlived theur use for US, they got assassinated.

What I'm saying is that we should juice out as much as we can in these times when the US needs us. After that, go back to being neutral. Even if US agrees to India in UNSC, there is still China to block us anyways.

The biggest enemy was Soviet Union. The fear of Soviet Union over running Europe. That fear has haunted West Euros, for ages. Communism or No Communism. US was busy in diffusing Cuban Missile Crisis. It was relying on Brit input. Communism never deterred US from allying with China.

There is broad agreement what you said, that India extract its pound of flesh in relationship. But be it BJP or Congress, all are known to offer its own pound of flesh to US for imaginary concessions.

What makes you not think US is not coaxing China to block India's bid? Think in terms of G 2. US merely wants to use India as a pawn as it tango with China. Question is: Is India's politics and Bureaucracy, intelligent enough to understand the game and one up US?

Can you give some examples?

What makes you not think US is not coaxing China to block India's bid?
Because US wants various deals with India to work out. e.g. Civil nuclear deal, construction of 6 nuclear reactors in India and more in the future as India wants to increase its nuclear power share dramatically. This is a golden opportunity for US to sell its fuel and reactors to India.

US merely wants to use India as a pawn as it tango with China.
Yes. And that's exactly why US will help India. US and India both know that India will be the one who suffers the most in case of an Indo/US-China war. And India won't just help US out in this war without any incentives. That's why US HAS to help India out in gaining what it wants currently.

Can you give some examples?
Operation Parakram Stalled
No Action(Covert or Overt) for 26/11
Headley access Denial
Denial data from US Servers for investigating/tracing terror activities
Hindu terrorism Bogey
LSA
etc

Can you list down what we got for above CBM's?

India already gave major defense deals, policy concessions to US for that. WE are not getting reactors for free. US nuclear industry which is in red, needs Indian business. Thats why its supporting NSG bid. If India goes through, many reactors contract will go to US. So US is not doing us favor. Both are getting something out of it.

Nope: US is just creating bogey to make India sign agreements, via which it will have more control on how to curtail India's wings. A poodle in Asia, you can call that. Till the time you dont see flight of US capital from China. Foget US fighting for you during any Indo China confrontation overtly.

Nothing, because they didn't need us then. But now they do.

Now you're talking. This is what I've been talking about in all my posts above. We wouldn't have got those things if they didn't need us now.

Foget US fighting for you during any Indo China confrontation overtly.
Its not about Indo-China confrontation, its about US-China confrontation. US can see that there might come a time very soon when they will have to tackle China and for that they need India. Since we know americans are 2 faced crows, lets use this opportunity to juice them. Take what we want. Because in a few years or maybe a decade, they might not need us anymore and won't give us anything.
