The A380 bet lost and the B787 won. The A320 however won since smaller aircrsfts have gotten longer legs due to newer engines allowinng direct long distance flights betwern smaller airports at more flexible passenger numbers. This is where Boeing needs to counter.
The cancellation of A380 has only boosted production of the A350. The 787 is reducing production from 14 to 12 units due to reduced demand and poor quality controls. Airbus is winning the battle of wide-bodies. Airbus has already decimated Boeing in the war for single aisle as Boeing threatens to cease production of the 737 MAX. The A380 needed to be kept in production long enough to recoup its development cost, it isn't a loss, it is a wash. The real loser is Boeing who is quickly becoming the pariah of aerospace as a greedy corporation that doesn't care about passenger safety.

What I mean is that in that battle of projection and business strategies Boeing's focus on medium size long range aircraft (B787) against Airbus' extra large long ramge aircraft (A380) Boeing business model won. That's why Airbus rushed in A350.

Re aircraft orders as of August 2019:
1. B787 - 1,464
2. A350 - 913

Then Boeing's 777x will enter the fray. To take up some of the lost market from the withdrawal of A380.

I think Internet will be a very boring place without the 50-cent army from China.
When a country is evil , there are a lot of 50 cents

But , if a country doing good things , many of its people will do as you said "50 cents " for free.

China's bid to challenge Boeing and Airbus falters

Stella Qiu, Tim Hepher
JANUARY 9, 2020

BEIJING/PARIS (Reuters) - Development of China’s C919 single-aisle plane, already at least five years behind schedule, is going slower than expected, a dozen people familiar with the program told Reuters, as the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC) struggles with a range of technical issues that have severely restricted test flights.

Delays are common in complex aerospace programs, but the especially slow progress is a potential embarrassment for China, which has invested heavily in its first serious attempt to break the hold of Boeing and Airbus on the global jet market.

The most recent problem came down to a mathematical error, according to four people with knowledge of the matter.

COMAC engineers miscalculated the forces that would be placed on the plane’s twin engines in flight - known in the industry as loads - and sent inaccurate data to the engine manufacturer, CFM International, four people familiar with the matter told Reuters. As a result, the engine and its housing may both have to be reinforced, the people said, most likely at COMAC’s expense – though another source denied any modification.

That and other technical and structural glitches meant that by early December, after more than two and a half years of flight testing, COMAC had completed less than a fifth of the 4,200 hours in the air that it needs for final approval by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), two people close to the project told Reuters.

COMAC, which has been developing the C919 largely in secret since 2008, rarely discloses its targets. Company official Yang Yang told Chinese state media in September that he expected certification by the country’s regulators in two to three years, without giving any further details. The company’s previous publicly stated target was end-2020. Other COMAC officials have said they are aiming for certification and delivery in 2021.

COMAC did not respond to Reuters requests for comment for this story. CFM, a joint venture between General Electric and France’s Safran, declined comment.

COMAC has still not finalised the correct calculations and data to send to the engine manufacturer, which are key to ensuring that the engine does not fail under heavy loads, one of the sources told Reuters. Another said load calculations often evolve during development.

But given the uncertainty, there is no guarantee COMAC will meet Yang’s 2021-2022 target, people close to the program told Reuters.

“Things do not always work out as planned, but I hope COMAC would slow down a bit and try not to rush things,” one of the sources familiar with the engine issue told Reuters. “Otherwise there will be tons of issues later on.”

Major blow to C919: China Aircraft Leasing orders 40 A321neo
16 January 2020

China Aircraft Leasing has placed an order for 40 Airbus A321neos.

The lessor states in a stock exchange disclosure that the aircraft will be delivered in stages up to 2026.

Chief executive, Mike Poon says: “We see enormous market appetite for this single-aisle aircraft with lower operational cost, and the order is in line with our portfolio strategy of investing in the most in-demand modern technology aircraft with unbeatable fuel efficiency.”

The C919s progress is well behind schedule

Already at least five years behind schedule, the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC) is struggling with a series of technical issues that are delaying test flights.

While delays almost always happen in complex aircraft development programs, the inability to move the C919s progress is being seen as a potential embarrassment for China.

All the technical glitches and delays with flight testing mean that COMAC has completed only 20% of the time the aircraft needs in the air to get final approval from the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC).

From what Reuters understands, COMAC has still not sent the correct calculations to General Electric and Safran. This is despite the engine maker needing the information to ensure that the engines can handle heavy loads.

As well as the engine problems, COMAC has also come across cracks in the horizontal stabilizers of some of the first few aircraft they built. There have also been gearbox problems that have forced the engines to shut down during test flights along with inspections that have discovered cracks and leaking oil.

The gearbox issues are related to unexpected vibrations that have added to the timeframe problems and could prove costly to resolve.

After all of this bad news, it looks like the C919 will suffer the same fate as the Shanghai Y-10.

i didn't see any official news about delay so far, can you find the original article?

Of course I hope your words on C919 would be as accurate as to J20, ^_^

With the cracks in the stablisers, gearbox shutdowns, leaking oil and vibrations it is no wonder C919 is nowhere near certification. It isn't even safe to fly.

At 2019.12.17, the 6th C919 had first flight.
And 6 C919 planes started hight intensity trial flighter between 4 cities.

Just wodnering why you never try to read any official info.

Gearbox shutdowns, leaking oil was not from Reuters article, if it's please provide the link.

Talking about miscalculation... It makes me recall the white elephants like A340, A380, Concorde. Of course, they are not from Franch companiese, you don't need blame your nation too much .

why don't u take help from foreign companies and later on indigenise the components on your own.it will save a lot of time.

After #xitler successfully spreading Chinese virus corona killing more than a million people.

#xitler now presenting Chinese Flying comac919 coffins to kill a million people across the world. 😠

They started the campaign with the leased aircraft given to their iron balls friend porkistan which crashed killing more than 100 people who were flying and people on the ground on whom that plane fell from sky.....😁😂😜

I know that plane was American but definitely maintained with duplicate Chinese spares and 3rd grade maintenance staff....😬🤐

Big order! Chinese carrier China Express signed a framework agreement on Wed to buy a total of 100 homegrown ARJ21 and #C919 aircraft from COMAC. It marked a significant step in the market development of China's self-developed plane industry.

(so here it goes)
