China’s COMAC chases Xi Jinping’s dream to challenge Airbus, Boeing
By Bloomberg | Updated: Oct 31, 2016, 01.52 PM IST
The state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China Ltd., locally known as COMAC, is building the 168-seat, single-aisle aircraft C919, betting the model would help the planemaker break into the big league.

China has a dream of challenging the duopoly of Airbus Group SE and Boeing Co. in the global market for air planes. That ambition is slowly taking shape in a hangar in Shanghai.

The state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China Ltd., locally known as COMAC, is building the 168-seat, single-aisle aircraft C919, betting the model would help the planemaker break into the big league. It’s banking on expertise gained from its smaller 90-seat jet, the ARJ21, which has won commercial orders worth at least $2 billion, mostly from local companies.

Despite delays to the C919 program -- the first test flight has been postponed at least twice since 2014 -- COMAC’s message to the world: Watch this space. The builder says it has already got commitments from 21 customers for 517 planes. At the Zhuhai Air Show this week, COMAC is set to showcase the aircraft with a mock-up and could announce more interest from prospective buyers.

The passenger jet project is part of an ambitious plan by President Xi Jinping to transform China from a maker of sneakers, apparels and toys into one that can compete with the likes of Airbus and Boeing. Getting the C919 from the design board to the skies is crucial for Xi, who has identified aerospace among sectors that could help accelerate modernization of the economy to resemble Japan and Germany.

Good Case
“Domestic airplane manufacturing is a good case of the country’s ambition to secure a foothold at the very top of the global value chain,” said Liu Yuanchun, executive dean of the National Academy of Development and Strategy at Renmin University of China in Beijing. “There’s still some serious groundwork to do to eventually realize its ambition of mastering sophisticated design and manufacturing processes.”

Aerospace ranks third after information technology and robotics on the priority list of Xi’s master plan “Made in China 2025” unveiled last year. For aviation manufacturing, Beijing has set its eyes on developing widebody passenger jets, heavy helicopters and various types of engines, in cooperation with global partners.

The Zhuhai Air Show, set to start Tuesday, will also feature the newly formed Aero Engine Corp. of China, which has plans to build engines for aircraft. Representatives for Airbus and Boeing didn’t immediately respond to e-mails seeking comments.

COMAC kicked off research and development on the C919 in 2008 as soon as the establishment of the company. The mission was to realize the dream of building and flying a large commercial aircraft -- hailed as the “flower” and “pearl” of modern manufacturing and embodiment of the nation’s technological standing.

The aircraft maker counts as many as 16 global corporations as suppliers, including General Electric Co. and Honeywell International Inc., and has set up at least 16 joint ventures for avionics, flight control, power, fuel and landing gear, according to COMAC, which estimates the market potential for the plane at as much as 650 billion yuan ($96 billion).

The C919 is in good shape for the test flight and the developer sees no reason for another delay, a representative for COMAC said, without providing a date. Since the work has just started, it’s too early to talk about competing with the majors as they are in a different league, he said. The test flight could happen later this year or early 2017, COMAC’s chief designer Wu Guanghui said separately in Zhuhai.

ARJ Playbook
Though the goal may be decades away, the planemaker may already have a playbook to count on. The Advanced Regional Jet ARJ21, which took 13 years to design, build and bring to market, has been flying since June. With a maximum range of about 1,380 miles and powered by GE engines, the jet competes with those of Bombardier Inc. and Embraer SA. China Aircraft Leasing Group Holdings Ltd., a Hong Kong-listed company, was the latest customer, agreeing to purchase 60 ARJ21s in a July deal worth about $2.3 billion at list prices.

China may eventually pull it off with the C919, but the aircraft may be initially confined only to the domestic market and to some interest from a few developing countries, said Shukor Yusof, a founder of aviation consulting firm Endau Analytics in Malaysia. Safety concerns may deter the world’s top airlines from opting for the jet, he said.

“After a few upgrades, it should be able to show the world that it’s a serious aircraft,” Shukor said. “In order to achieve the comfort level for airlines, especially first-tier airlines, it could take more than two decades.”

For the C919, once ready and safe, China could prove to be a captive market. The nation, set to surpass the U.S. to become the world’s largest aviation market by passengers by 2024, will have 1.3 billion travelers by 2035, according to the International Air Transport Association. The country may need 6,810 new aircraft valued at $1.03 trillion in the next two decades to meet rising demand for air travel, Boeing estimated in September.

“At some point, China cannot simply rely on imports from Boeing and Airbus for its aircraft demand,” Renmin University’s Liu said. “Making its own plane elevates China’s status and is a key component of propelling China’s economic growth in the future.”

COMAC Debuts Chinese-Russian Wide-Body C929 Model at Zhuhai Airshow
By Lena Ge, China Aviation Daily | Nov. 02, 2016

COMAC C929 model at Zhuhai Airshow

State-owned State-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) unveiled a 1:10 scale model of the future Russian-Chinese wide-body aircraft, known as C929, at Airshow China 2016 in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.

This is the first time the Chinese manufacturer is showcasing a physical model of its planned twin-aisle project with Russia's United Aircraft Corp. (UAC).

Painting both COMAC and UAC's logos on its front fuselage, the model features a red-and-blue livery across its fuselage and tail. The red resembles the Chinese flag, with two yellow stars on it.

The basic model of the jet will have 280 seats in three classes, with a range of 12,000km.

COMAC and UAC have signed an agreement to set up a joint venture under a program to build a wide-body civil aircraft during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China on June 25, 2016, marks the beginning of the aircraft design and the creation of a Russian-Chinese joint venture in charge of carrying out the production of the aircraft.

The joint venture will be officially launched in Shanghai within the year, the Chinese airframer said in a press conference on November 2, which will collaborate on the development, production and after-sales support of a wide-body airliner.

COMAC added the C929 plane will undergo 7 years for its first test flight and 10 years for delivery. It expects the C929 to take its first flight in 2023 and entry into service three years later.

It has also decided that final assembly will be in Shanghai, near the C919 assembly line.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, UAC president Yuri Slyusar said both parties would invest a total of US$13-20 billion on the project.

Well, in gobalization such things are happening everyday. What we need is an open mind.

A Boeing or Airbus plane u fly may have Chinese elements.

yes exactly the brand Name of Boeing /Airbus is Important .....................people buy Apple Products just because of it's brand Name ..............................China is just providing cheap labors .

if Boeing & Airbus are available in comparable price then nobody (outside china ) will buy Chinese products .

and may be Donald trump will force all American companies to come out of China .

you are still not using Chinese Engines .....................

why this project was unsuccessful ?? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_Y-10

Hmmmmmmm, actually I don't disagree with u.

Cheap labor - yes. Everyone at the early stage has to start up as "cheap". Then some manage to climb up the value chain, and some just sink.

Brand name - yes. But many also slide into oblivion once it loses its competitive edge. I used to be Nokia's fan. Other big names - Motorola, Sony Ericson, Black Berry... (Maybe they continue to excel in certain fields).

Trump & American Jobs - Not sure. Tell us which sectors can move back to US. Some of manufacturing is moving out of China in fact. U and I are both aware capitalism is profit-driven. Many items (e.g. Apple) can be made in USA just that the margin will be greatly narrowed. Donald is no exception but impersonated capital (interest groups) IMO.

Chinese Engines - yes, weak despite improvements. but normally u won't get strong until countless tests and modifications and failures have been made.

Boeing is barely able to make 41 B737 jets a month out of its Renton, WA factory (against B737-NG and B737-MAX unfulfilled orders of 4,000+). Airbus is clocking close to 60 A320s a month. It's understandable that Boeing wants a new production line in Asia to stay close to the fastest growing markets. However, I doubt if Indian government / DGCA will allow aircraft made-in-China to be bought by Indian carriers. Indian carriers buying B737 (SpiceJet, Jet Airways, Air India Express) will either have to wait for slower deliveries out of Renton, or switch to A320.

yes only domestic Chinese Airlines and puppets of china like Pakistan , Nigeria etc will Buy (if china is ready to Give them Loans ) .

otherwise there is already a established cheap Aircraft provider = Embraer of Brazil

also Boeing , antonov & airbus have started manufacturing in India , which will reduce their costs .

soon Dassault of France will start manufacturing in India ( civilian aircraft ) , this is why they are starting Engine manufacturing Plant in India to manufacture 10,000 Engines .

Now tell me who the hell will Buy Chinese Aircraft if Aircraft of established & reliable companies are available at comparative rates ??

may be Pakistan & other Puppets of China could Buy Chinese Aircraft if china is ready to provide them Loans .

CFM Leap-1C Powering C919 Achieves Joint EASA/FAA Certification
China Aviation Daily | Dec. 22, 2016

COMAC C919 prototype

CFM International's advanced LEAP-1C integrated propulsion system was today simultaneously awarded Type Certificates by both the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), paving the way for entry into commercial service on the COMAC C919 aircraft.

CFM is unique in that it is the only engine manufacturer to gain dual original certification from both agencies, rather than one lead agency issuing a type certification and the second agency validating that certification. This reflects CFM's 50/50 design and production structure between parent companies GE and Safran, which has been so successful for more than 40 years.

"It has been an incredible year for the LEAP program, culminating in the certification of the third model in this engine family," said Allen Paxson, executive vice president for CFM. "Everyone, from the project and engineering teams to manufacturing and our suppliers, has done an incredible job of keeping this program on schedule and building an engine that is delivering everything that we have promised."

The LEAP engine was officially launched in December 2009 when COMAC selected the LEAP-1C as the sole Western powerplant for its 150-passenger C919 airplane. The engine incorporates a unique fully integrated propulsion system (IPS).

"It has been a real pleasure working in close coordination with COMAC on this program," said Francois Bastin, executive vice president for CFM. "The LEAP-1C is the only model for which CFM provides a totally integrated propulsion system that includes the engine, nacelle, and thrust reverser. The IPS, along with the pylon developed by COMAC, were all designed in conjunction with each other. As a result, the LEAP-1C features improved aerodynamics, lower weight, and easier maintenance. We think that our customers are going to be pleased with the airplane/engine combination."

The LEAP-1C thrust reverser was developed by Nexcelle, a joint venture between Safran Nacelles and GE Aviation's Middle River Aircraft Systems (MRAS).

In addition to the IPS, the LEAP-1C engine features some of the industry's most advanced technologies, including 3-D woven carbon fiber composite fan blades and fan case; a unique debris rejection system; 4th generation three dimensional aerodynamic designs; the Twin-Annular, Pre-Swirl (TAPS) combustor featuring additively manufactured fuel nozzles; ceramics matrix composite shrouds in the high-pressure turbine; and titanium aluminide (Ti-Al) blades in the low-pressure turbine.

The first LEAP-1C engine successfully completed a flight test program in late 2014 on a modified 747 flying testbed at GE facilities in Victorville, California. In November 2015, the first C919 rolled out at COMAC facilities in Shanghai. More recently, COMAC successfully started the engines for the first time in early November 2016, running them for 10 minutes at ground idle power at the company's Shanghai Pudong International Airport facility.

The LEAP engines currently in commercial service are providing operators with double-digit improvements in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to today's best CFM engine, along with dramatic reductions in engine noise and exhaust gaseous emissions. All this technology brings with it CFM's legendary reliability and low maintenance costs.

Boeing assures quick delivery of B737 Max
2017-03-04 09:58
Boeing Co plans to deliver some of its new fuel-efficient B737 Max aircraft directly to Chinese customers from its fledgling completion and delivery center in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, after the plant begins operations, the company said in Beijing.

The US aircraft manufacturer, which held a news conference in Beijing on Thursday, did not disclose when the new Zhoushan plant would start operating.

In October, Boeing revealed the city of Zhoushan, near Shanghai in eastern China, as the location of its first overseas B737 completion and delivery center, as it aims to meet the strong demand for single-aisle aircraft in China and international markets.

Boeing said it will deliver its first B737 Max jet around May this year and it has so far received more than 3,600 orders from over 80 customers globally. Airlines are attracted to the Max because it consumes significantly less fuel than existing models.

Compared with B737, the company says its B737 Max series will help save 14 percent on average on fuel bills and reduce noise by 40 percent, and the plane has a more spacious interior with more storage space for passengers.

Darren Hulst, Northeast Asia marketing managing director of Boeing's commercial airplanes group, said the B737 Max would have a flying range of 1,000 kilometers more than the B737.

"China has seen the fastest growth rate of short-haul domestic market and the B737 Max will help Chinese airlines to launch more direct routes to second- and third-tier cities and further stimulate market growth," Hulst said.

"Currently, one-third of the orders for the B737s come from China, our largest customer for the model. We could expect a similar proportion of 737 Max orders from China in the near future."

Boeing has forecast that China will need about 5,000 single-aisle aircraft in the next two decades.

Meanwhile, Boeing's European archrival Airbus Group SE is bullish on the growth potential of the single-aisle aircraft market in China.

The company said it is on target to deliver its first A330 in September 2017 from its new completion and delivery center in Tianjin, the company's first overseas completion and delivery site for the A330.

By 2019, the center aims to reach a stable production rate of two A330 aircraft a month.

Russian-Chinese widebody passenger airliner project officially launched

Posted on April 5th, 2017 by Russian Aviation Insider in Aerospace, Air Transport, Russia,Trending

The joint venture will be headquartered in Shanghai Free-Trade Zone (Marina Lystseva)

A joint venture between Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (Comac) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to develop a long-haul widebody aircraft (provisionally designated Comac C929) has been registered in China, as follows from UAC’s annual report. The establishment of the venture marks the official start of the project.

Known as China-Russia Commercial Aircraft International Corporation, the joint venture’s scope includes the development, production, marketing, and aftersales support of a long-range widebody aircraft. The UAC and Comac have equal shares in the project.

The project, which originally called for launching the JV at the end of 2016, has been leaning more toward the Chinese side, as both its headquarters and the projected final assembly line will be established in China. Additionally, the JV will be headed by Guo Bozhi, general manager of Comac’s widebody arm. The primary Russian representative on the project, UAC’s Sergey Fominykh, will serve as a member of the board of directors.

The aircraft to be developed is expected to find the greater share of customers on the Chinese market. Later this year, General Electric and Rolls-Royce are expected to contest the right to provide the aircraft’s powerplant. The overall market is projected at between 800 and 1,000 aircraft, with deliveries starting in 2027.

China-developed commercial airliner C919 has edged a step closer to takeoff after the plane's developers put it through a high-speed taxi test on Sunday morning at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

The test started at 8:00 a.m. and lasted for three hours. The plane reached a top speed of approximately 248 kilometers per hour, approaching the speed required for takeoff and landing.

C919's developer, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), is expected to launch a test flight of the aircraft in the first half of this year.

The C919, designed to accommodate over 150 passengers, is a narrow-body plane. Its main rivals on the market will include Airbus 320 and Boeing 737. The COMAC also plans to start developing wide-body aircraft in 2017.

How did they get the plane to Shanghai-Pudong? Or was it being assembled right there?
