India is readying to conduct a series of tests of an advanced version of its indigenously built multi-barrel rocket system 'Pinaka' from the Chandipur based test range off the Odisha coast this week.

The tests would be carried out by the Army personnel with the logistic support from the Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE), a unit of DRDO. Sources said several rounds of tests had been planned in three days.

A defence official said the scheduled tests are significant as the rocket system which would be tested had been developed with advanced technology and was slightly different from its earlier version. "Preparation for the tests is underway. The tests will assess its stability in flight as well as accuracy and consistency," he said.

The successful trial would pave the way for its induction in the armed forces later this year. DRDO-developed Pinaka rocket system is aimed at giving the Army an upper hand in low-intensity war with its quick-reaction time and high rate of fire.

The Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL), capable of acting as a force-multiplier, will gradually replace the current artillery system. The rocket launcher, which is also known as the Weapon Area System (WAS), can fire rockets with a range of 39-40 km and also can launch 12 rockets with 1.2 tonne of high explosives in 40 seconds.

A scientist said the homemade Pinaka can neutralise a target area of 350 sq km
 and is meant to supplement the existing artillery system at a range beyond 30 km. It can be fitted with a variety of warheads ranging from blast-cum-pre-fragmented high explosives to anti-tank mines.

CLGM Testfired: The DRDO on Monday conducted tests of an advanced version of Cannon-launched Laser Guided Missile (CLGM) from the ITR here.

Three rounds of the missile were test-fired from a specially built launcher at the launching complex-II of ITR. A defence official said the missile destroyed the targets as expected.

"The tests were conducted in between 3.30 pm and 4.30 pm during low tide period. There will be one more round of test on Tuesday," he said

The camouflage scheme of Pinaka requires improvement. The Rockets look like color pencils rather than menacing military rockets!!!

Must be an error - 350 sq km (approx 19km x 19km) area cannot be destroyed even by a standard 200kt nuke.
Even a heavy MRLS like Smerch (1 unit - 12 projectiles) can only neutralise an area of 1km x 1km.

Re: CLGM Tests Sucessful

I dont know by the term ' Advance version ' but can speculate it may be a version with greater speed or greater range..

Re: CLGM Tests Sucessful

CLGM is a new generation anti-tank missile developed by ADE.It can destroy any static/moving target in 3 km to 5 km range. It is an all terrain missile to be used by the army, navy and air force.

This missile has bigger warhead and little slower than original 105-mm Laser Homing Attack or Laser Homing Anti-Tank (LAHAT) from Israel. It would equip the Arjun MK-2 and MK-1 tanks.

The missile can also target other armoured targets and helicopters at extended ranges. The ADE has developed the missile with global positioning system technology.

Re: CLGM Tests Sucessful

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Monday conducted the tests of an advanced version of Cannon-launched Laser Guided Missile (CLGM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Odisha coast.

Altogether three rounds of the missile were test-fired from a specially built launcher at the launching complex-II of Chandipur based test range. A defence official said the mission was successful as the missile perfectly destroyed the targets as expected.

"The tests were conducted in between 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm during low tide period. There will be one more round of test on Tuesday. All the data have been collected and would be evaluated after the completion of the mission," he said.

CLGM is a new generation anti-tank missile developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) at Bangalore. It can destroy any target in 3 km to 5 km range.

"The CLGM uses a laser of a specific frequency bandwidth to locate the target. The laser creates a heat signature on the target. The missile recognises it and homes in on it even if the target is moving," said a defence scientist.

The missile can also target other armoured targets and helicopters at extended ranges. The ADE has developed the missile with global positioning system technology.
