This picture is also in this NYT article:
It seems like the goal is to make an example of Ukraine to the West: Russia will defend its strategic interests within its sphere of influence (so far) no matter the cost

The caption in the NYT article reads:
A villager opened a box of rocket-propelled grenades left by the Ukrainian Army in Starobecheve, southeast of Donetsk. Pro-Russia rebels took over the town after the military withdrew. Credit Francisco Leong/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images
Question is, is this person a villager, or a militiaman?

Information warfare continues on both sides.

Captive driver BTR: One fire was enough for me for a lifetime resident of the city of Sumy told how, once in the combat zone, immediately came under fire due to the fault of command. 41-year-old Sergei Besedin was in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in August. He, like many other military service men from the recruiting office received a summons, and then offered a choice: the army or jail.

'No Russian troops in Ukraine': Moscow's OSCE rep responds to Kiev's claims
"I have made a decision to cancel my working visit to the Republic of Turkey due to sharp aggravation of the situation in Donetsk region, particularly in Amvrosiivka and Starobeshevo, as Russian troops were brought into Ukraine," Petro Poroshenko said in a statement on his website.

The Russian representative to the OSCE Andrey Kelin, meanwhile, has given a firm response to the allegations, saying that "we have said that no Russian involvement has been spotted, there are no soldiers or equipment present."

"Accusations relating to convoys of armored personnel carriers have been heard during the past week and the week before that," he said. "All of them were proven false back then, and are being proven false again now."
Only Russian volunteers fighting with anti-Kiev forces - Donetsk Republic leader
"They [Russian volunteers] are among us, people of Donbass [Region, eastern Ukraine] because we are blood brothers," said the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Donetsk People's Republic, Aleksandr Zakharchenko, in an interview to Russian media.
Russian Defense Ministry: Online list of army units 'relocated to Ukraine' is a fake
"We have studied the contents of this hoax, and are obliged to disappoint its overseas authors and their few sympathizers in Russia, who have joined forces to publish their 'revelations' about the Defense Ministry," spokesman General Igor Konashenkov said in a statement cited by Russian news agencies.

"Their scoop bears no relation to reality," he added.

The list of units – variously referred to by the authors as having been "moved to the conflict area" and "stationed on the southeastern border with Ukraine" – was published Tuesday afternoon by a blog belonging to a low-profile Russian veterans' organization, Forgotten Regiment. The group is headed by human rights activist Elena Vasilieva, who recently claimed that bodies of dead Russian soldiers have been coming back en masse from eastern Ukraine.

Russian volunteers are in Ukraine, this is known. However, Russian soldiers? We do not know. It is quite possible that what I had assumed earlier is wrong.

There are plenty of NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) that are involved in a lot of online trolling and propaganda. Putin did pack many of such UK NGOs off back to UK, but apparently, some still remain. On a slightly related note, and thankfully, the Modi government in India is also turning the heat on these foreign NGOs whose sole purpose is to sow discord, obstruct development, and cause mayhem. Every country should keep foreign "cookie distributors" out.

Regarding content, unless it is the original content of the poster, the poster must provide a link, or at least name the author, so that the forum does not host content that can be accused of having been plagiarized. In your case, you have mentioned that it was another author, so it is fine. I would request @happy to add source.

Now back to the cookie distributor, yes, that is true.

In this conflict, as of now, neither side has clean hands. Said that, I think we all should ponder who started this mess.

You mentioned Budapest Memorandum in this post.

Here are the salient points from Wiki.
1.Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders.
2.Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine.
3.Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.
4.Seek United Nations Security Council action if nuclear weapons are used against Ukraine.
5.Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Ukraine.
6.Consult with one another if questions arise regarding these commitments.[12][13]
If you look at the points above, it was the west who violated point 3 above. Only thereafter, did Russia respond, which is a violation of point 2, which was also violated by the west, considering the fact that there are armed western combatants in Ukraine who are fighting against Donbass Ukrainians.

Regarding outside help, one has to remember, there are plenty of civil wars where outside help was sought by one or both the warring parties. This does not take away the merit of this conflict being a civil war, since, on either side of the conflict, we have Ukrainians.
