Sub collides with sonar array towed by U.S. Navy ship (Chinese sub hits USS John McCain)

In what a U.S. military official calls an "inadvertent encounter," a Chinese submarine hit an underwater sonar array being towed by the destroyer USS John McCain on Thursday.

The array was damaged, but the sub and the ship did not collide, the official said. A sonar array is a radar towed behind a ship that listens and locates underwater sounds.

The incident occurred near Subic Bay off the coast of the Philippines.

The PLAN's subs stalk those regions. During the 2004 Tsunami, there was an incident where an Indian sub, a Chinese sub and a USN sub were in the same area. It's not known who was stalking who, but the Indian sailors detected an unusual ocean movement and got in touch with their naval base in the Andamans who after a frantic search, confirmed to them that a tsunami was on the way. The USN ship on the other hand, realized it late that there was unusual ocean movement, but fairly quickly determined it to be a tsunami due to their contact with US weather stations in the Pacific Ocean. Both subs got away safely, but the Chinese sub was never heard from again.

There were rumours that there might have been a confrontation between the USN and IN subs and the PLAN sub.

AFAIK, the Chinese sub was tailing the Indian sub, and was in turn being tailed by the US sub.

If I recall correctly, the IN sub knew that they were being tailed, but the Chinese sub didn't know that it was being tailed by the US sub.
(Read this on some other forum from USN guy). USN knew what the Chinese sub was doing.

The way china is trying to get a foothold in the Indian ocean.

Everywhere in the ocean is a potential flash point.It all depends if were ready to counter it and how advanced our ASW capability is.There are plenty of holes in our detection system.We need to spend real money to upgrade it.
It doesn't pay to be the good guy by spending less on defense than our potential adversaries
