Blasts in Tibetan area after China steps up vigil on border with India

9 Mar 2009, 2003 hrs IST, Saibal Dasgupta, TNN

BEIJING: Two bombs exploded in a Tibetan region damaging a police car and a fire engine on Monday, the Chinese state media said on Monday. Another report suggested that two hand-made bombs exploded after a clash between the police and the local people in Qinghai Province.

The "minor explosions" took place following a dispute at a timber yard between the authorities and dozens of local residents. Some local people were angry because the police had stopped a timber lorry for a security check, state media reported.

The incident took place in the face of heightened security and efforts by the government to step up vigil on the Sino-Indian border to ensure that Dalai Lama's supporters do not sneak in.

The central government in Beijing announced that it has tightened border controls in the Tibetan areas ahead of "expected sabotage activities by the Dalai Lama clique".

"We will firmly crackdown on criminal activities in Tibet's border area that pose a threat to China's sovereignty and government," Fu Hongyu told the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's legislative body.

The decision to deploy thousands of military and paramilitary forces and besides increasing the vigil along the Himalayan border comes after a monk set himself on fire at a Tibetan speaking area recently.

The incident took place ahead of the 50th anniversary of a Tibetan uprising that took place between March 10 and March 31 in 1959.

The Chinese government has declared March 25 as a public holiday in order to celebrate what it calls the day of liberation for ordinary Tibetans, who had been held slave by powerful monks and landed gentry close to the Dalai Lama regime.

Both the central government and local governments in Tibetan speaking areas in and around the Tibet Province had enhanced security ahead of the anniversary celebrations. The uprising had resulted in the fleeing of the Dalai Lama to India on March 31 1959.

Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, saw bloody riots at this time last year when some monks held demonstration to observe the 49th anniversary of the uprising.

The government has barred foreign tourists from travelling to Tibet during the month of March, according to travel agencies.

Bomb lobbed at police station in China's west

By AUDRA ANG, Associated Press Writer
Tue Mar 17, 10:04 am ET

BEIJING – A bomb blast in an unoccupied police station in a Tibetan area in western China has added to tensions during a sensitive month marking the anniversaries of violent anti-government uprisings and the Dalai Lama's exile to India.

The explosion shattered windows at the newly built station in Bogexi, a town in the predominantly Tibetan Ganzi prefecture, police official Liu Xiaojun said Tuesday.

The building was not yet occupied at the time of the blast early Monday and an investigation was under way, said Liu, who works at the public security bureau in Batang county, which oversees the town. Batang, in Sichuan province's far west, is about five miles (seven kilometers) from the Tibetan border.

Bombings have previously occurred in Tibetan areas, and Beijing has portrayed them as part of a campaign of violence by the Dalai Lama and his supporters to overthrow Chinese rule, although authorities have provided little evidence to support the allegation.

The state-run China Daily newspaper blamed the blast on "terrorists," a term Chinese officials have used to characterize followers of the Dalai Lama. The report provided no other details.

Saturday marked the one-year anniversary of anti-government riots in Lhasa, Tibet's regional capital. Tuesday marked 50 years after the Dalai Lama's March 17 escape into exile in India after Chinese troops crushed a Tibetan revolt.

The unrest last year in Lhasa was triggered when monks staging a peaceful commemoration of the aborted 1959 uprising were blockaded by police. It spread to three other provinces in western China — Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai — and was the most sustained and widespread Tibetan uprising in decades.

China responded by flooding the region with troops, and Tibetan rights groups reported that many monks and nuns were detained or arrested and monasteries were put under tight watch.

The stringent security measures have been in place for much of the year and residents said they were ratcheted up again in recent weeks as Beijing tried to head off trouble ahead of the anniversaries. Chains of checkpoints for vehicles are now in place and police and paramilitary troops have been patrolling in towns.

So far, it appears that major demonstrations have been prevented. Small pockets of protests, however, have been reported by Tibetan rights groups in recent weeks.

Most could not be independently confirmed because communication is spotty in those areas and residents who are reached will not talk for fear of official retaliation.

The London-based Free Tibet group said Tuesday that a Tibetan monk on March 10 threw a pile of leaflets into the air and shouted "Free Tibet!" in Litang, another heavily Tibetan area in Ganzi.

The group said Lobsang Wangchuk, the 29-year-old monk, was quickly taken away by armed police to an unknown location.

A rugged, deeply Buddhist region filled with monasteries and nunneries, Ganzi is known for its strong Tibetan identity and has been at the center of dissent for years. It saw some of the most violent protests last spring.

Although the Dalai Lama has said that Chinese restrictions on Tibet's religious practices have resulted in a "cultural genocide," Beijing insists it has bettered the lives of the people by improving the economy and developing the Himalayan region.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that a Chinese-appointed delegation of Tibetan legislators visiting Washington reiterated that religious freedoms were prevalent in Tibet and that American officials "did not see the full picture."

Shingtsa Tenzinchodrak, the leader of the five-member delegation, was quoted as saying that Beijing was open to talks with the Dalai Lama "as long as he gives up his separatist activites," a long-time position of the Chinese leadership. The Dalai Lama has said he seeks genuine autonomy for Tibet, not separation from China.

Communist Party of the Republic of China set up in Taiwan.

Communist Party of the Republic of China was set up in Taiwan,China in March 31th.To our surprise ,the general secretary of communist party is Chen Tianfu,he is the paternal cousin of the former president of Taiwan,China----Chen Shuibian. As we all know ,Chen Shuibian is so active in dividing country, but his cousin is constrary.
According to Taiwan 'Daily News' on April 7th,after the Taiwan communist established in 2008,Communist Party of the Republic of China become the
147th political party in Taiwan.
When Chen Tianfu was being interviewed by the journalists,he said,'the party will go along the 'socialist road',he has been in mainland for 8 years, and he want to use his own action to let the people in Taiwan learn more about communist, and promote national unity.
Chen Tianfu pointed out that the present social system is not fit taiwan, and Communist Party of the Republic of China is not only a revolutionary party, but also a quasi party, the objective of the party is to create a society that everyone has meal to eat.
Chen Tianfu is now 52 years old,his family moved to Shanghai 9 years ago,he is running a business hotel in Shanghai,he is a successful businessman.
He has stated that Chen Shuibian has hide many things (Chen Shuibian has been put into prison because of corruption),and he is a totally different man .

He is a real Chinese man,I am proud there has been such a great man in Taiwan.Chen Tianfu, you are my idol.

Its a free country, so they can do what they like. Even if they probably want to put the country under foreign occupation in the long run. The glory of free speech folks.

Although I don't think it will have that good a reception in ROC though, they aren't exactly big on communism over there.

How much popularity/members do this Communist Party have in Taiwan?

I don't know much about Taiwan, but this event proved that Republic of China is truly a democratic state. But how wise it would be for Republic itself, is something to deliberate. Because, if this communist party starts movement to 'reunite' with mainland, things could get out of hand.

I think you may be right at present, the party is just setted up,and Chen Tianfu are trying best to promote the party, not like the communist of the mainland, the Taiwan people can join the party without payjing party membership dues monthly.Everything is hard at the beginning, and the Communist in mainland had only 50 members at the beginning. But because of its character ,it finally stept onto the history stage, and work for all the people. As Mr Mao says''A single spark can start a prairie fire'',the prospect is wide.Believe that,no matter where we are,we have the same blood.
And the current gov of Taiwan is held in the hand of Nationalist party,Nationalist pary is created by Shun Zhongshan,a man both the mainland and Taiwan honour him as the father of the nation, and even the then president Jiang Jieshi want a united China, but he failed in the civil war,so he went to Taiwan, and his later generation don't get involved into politics. But the Nationalist party has a patriotic tradition, they would set the general interest above everything ,to see things at the whole nation.
And the people there in a large extent ,come from mainland, their roots are in mainland. Why they don't want to be a part of the China, just because we are poor at that time, and Taiwan people know little about mainland.they think if they were regulated by the communist, they will be poor and lose freedom, but they are wrong ,see Macao and Hongkong, there are prosperous, and the chinese gov permite them remain their social system as Macao,Hongkong.
I think you will soon change your words into'' Taiwan province.''

I'm sure the Taiwanese people would very much like to unified with the mainland, just not under communism. Which is hated by the majority of the people there.

Best of Luck to the Taiwanese. If both China (PRC) and Taiwan (RC) wants to merge, may that be in a peaceful way without hurting common people and their well-being.

But I also think a large portion of the current generation might not want to go there - 'cause it's uncertain path and they might not like to lose the individuality. From a nation to a 'province' doesn't sound too alluring.

But also in recent years China (PRC) has come a long way economically and the western culture is being blended with Chinese culture, which the Taiwanese people are used to. So may be after a little tentative move to reconciliation, they would embrace being a Chinese.

I agree with you, if people of a country wants to be unified with mainland, they needs heart to do it , opening of party will not do anything.

And this man is not corrupted? What a joke! Well, yang congraz for this man for what he had achieved. The greed and determination of any corrupted politician or corrupted human being can always out weight and take over the position of any civilized and nobel down to earth man. To you he can be your hero and best of the best man from this earth who can bring food to you and the rest of china. But to me it suddenly is a shame to know that people like you had stop dreaming and achieving from your own ideology to have a better life and to be a better human being; but instead you start idolizing unethical and immoral leaders who can't promise anything beyond a plate of meal. Yang, life is long; lead it as how you want to be not by someone else.

It's my mistake

The original artical is written in Chinese, and I translated it into English,so I may made some mistakes in it."have meal to eat"it's just the surface meaning of the words, its deep meaning is everyone can enjoy a stable life, with good warefare, and at no risk to lose their source of income.Taiwan is almost a developed zone, and even in mainland ,we have reached Xaokang(everyone can eat his fill),a few people is so wealthy and the chanllenge of the mainland is to bring the rest people a more wealthy life.In this point,we are the same.

Yang your touch up to finalized the main point of that article still didn't exceed my satisfaction. No matter how nicely you try to put it up again; to me you're still repeating the same thing again.. It's still about nothing else but MONEY, MONEY, MONEY & MORE MONEY. Where as if there's a sense of BELONGING, BOUND, TRUST, HUMANITY, DIGNITY, & WEALTH in his word and ideology then thing would had hope to balance out the way it should be and hence I would had admire this man as much as you do.

China is fishing in troubled waters in Lanka: Chidambaram

China is fishing in troubled waters in Lanka: Chidambaram

China is using the ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka to expand its sphere of influence and that has impacted India’s response to the situation, said Home Minister P Chidambaram. “China is fishing in troubled waters. That is a lone, discordant voice among all of the global community,” he told Hindustan Times on Friday.

China is encouraging the Sri Lankan offensive against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) while the rest of the world, including India, has called for a cessation of hostilities to enable civilians to escape. Fighting for a separate state for Tamil-speaking people, the LTTE has been declared a terrorist outfit by United Nations.

"China is acting with a clear agenda,” said Chidambaram. “Our policies take account of the Chinese calculations.” He said Pakistan also might have wanted to seek a foothold on the southern (maritime) border of India, but internal issues were holding it back. “They are not in a position to do something adventurous now,” he said.

The comments are significant as Lanka’s importance for Beijing is in the sea-lanes of communication in the north Indian Ocean through which Chinese trade and energy supplies flow.

“They want to secure the lanes by building strategic and defense ties with Colombo,” said Sujit Dutta, head of the East Asia Programme of the Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis.

Senior Chinese naval officials have often stated that “the Indian Ocean isn’t India’s” despite no such claim by New Delhi. In the conversation that spanned a range of political and security issues Chidambaram expressed satisfaction over his 150 days in office. He replaced Shivraj Patil on December 1, 2008 in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks. He was finance minister till then.

“Our intelligence gathering and sharing are far more effective now than six months ago. State governments are responding to the situation with utmost urgency and are better equipped to deal with it should another terrorist attack take place,” he said.

The Home Hinister said India is trying to put pressure on Colombo and the LTTE to cease hostilities. "It’s a humanitarian crisis. We want the killings to stop. Unfortunately, neither the Sri Lankan government nor the LTTE is willing to listen to the international community,” he said.

Chidambaram said the advances made by the Taliban in Pakistan were “extremely worrisome” for India. “Large sections of Pakistan are under the control of the Taliban,” he said. However, the Home Minister did not endorse former NSA Brajesh Mishra’s fears that the Taliban could “get their hands” on nuclear weapons. “My impression is that there are adequate systems in Pakistan to secure them,” he said.

“Read my lips. We’ve made substantial progress…I am not at liberty to disclose details as some procedural formalities are still underway,” he said.

Sri Lanka became a covert pearl long back. China is investing heavily in Sri Lanka. Making roads, ports and also arming them to fight the LTTE.
India stuck between the devil and the deep sea has done nothing over there. Even Pakistan has done more over there than India. All India can do is crib about China expanding its influence there. I think the Indian Tamils don't realize that their support for the Tamils in SL is hurting Indian National interests. Also we are not helped by self serving Tamil political parties fanning Tamil nationalism.
