China's military buildup continues to threaten the neighbourhood

===

BEIJING: Amid escalation of maritime tensions with neighbours and a US military focus shift to Asia Pacific, Chinese military is stepping up its conventional missile capability, polishing its ability to carry out multiple launches while preserving its strategic nuclear deterrence.

"Conventional missiles are a trump card in modern warfare. So we must be ready at any time. We must be able to deliver a quick response to attacks, hit the targets with high accuracy, and destroy them totally," Tan Weihong, Commander of Second Artillery Force, which handles conventional and nuclear missiles said in a rear interview.

The conventional missile brigade was thrown open to the official English media for the first time after it was established, lifting a veil of mystery.

"The unit first grabbed attention in July 1995, when China announced the PLA would carry out missile tests in the high seas. Six missiles were fired in a week and each successfully hit their target.

"The missions announced to the world that China had both nuclear and conventional missiles, and thereby a strengthened military deterrence system," the state-run China Daily said.

"Before that, China had only nuclear missiles. The Gulf War in 1990 helped the nation's military leaders realise that conventional missiles were playing a bigger role in modern warfare," it said.

China has upgraded its missiles in the past few years several times, the brigade's armament has been updated several times, the Daily report said.

Meanwhile, with the increase of missile launching units over the years, the brigade had to develop a new commanding system to replace the old one that was based on vocal orders.

"The new system can handle multiple launches at the same time, which was impossible in the past," Tan said.

When an IRBM is fired, how would the enemy know that its conventional or nuclear?

Ballistic missiles can accidentally trigger a nuclear conflict.

i think when china announce they have IRBM, the opposition would assume its IRBM not nuke because: 1.china is not crazy enough to use nuke. 2. depend on what conflict, if its limited conflict, no one will think china will use nuke. 3: china has non-first use policy for decades. 4:its sucide to use nuke against US or other nuclear capable country during a conflict. 5:MRBM has different trajectory than ICBM 6:MRBM has different speed than ICBM

common sense says its not nuke base on above reason.

So China will call us and tell us that we just shot a missile but dont worry it is not a nuclear warhead?

like i said the trajectory and speed are different than ICBM. also I certainly hope indian general is not dumb enough to think china will lunch a nuke at india during a border dispute or something like that, despite they have non-first use policy for years.

No, don't need that trouble: neither China, nor india and Pakistan has the ability to fight an nuclear war.
So, unless indian army is successfully matching towards Chengdu, any nuclear attack won't happen.

As soon as ballistic missiles start flying, you are very very close to the nuclear threshold because they will fly both ways.

those ballistic missiles taked about (and cruise missiles like cj-10) r mainly aimned at taiwan... us bases in japan....veitnam and india.....among them the only one we do need to consider their opposite voice is taiwan which is the core issue prc now has not too many ways to sovle........so to use others as exucses (like SCS related nations) to develope our missile techs and deploy enough missiles while seemingly not giving too much pressure on the KMT gov may be a good option for PLA.......
