The AM General did gave assistance to Chinese manufacturers in building Humvee. If the price tag is less, than it could become a competitor for Humvee.

Pakistan would be an ideal operator for these Military Jeeps. Since their armed forces uses toyota class open top Mobile jeeps, which makes their soldiers vulnerable to small arms fire. Even the Russian GAZ-2975 would be good replacement since its very cheap.

No, this copy has been in existence even before the purchase of HUMVEE from GM.

What is the problem if they do copy?

If a war happens now, their soldiers would be in heavily protected vehicles, while ours would be traveling in trucks from 80s. I would rather have India protect its soldiers by copying others, than send her soldiers unprotected to any battle.

I wasnt trying to compare ours with them or wasnt trying to be sarcastic by my above comment.

Do u really think we cannot produce armoured Vehicles of our own??. If we wanted Hummuvs we would brought it a way long back ago.

Agreed even we mostly use Gypsys and TATA 407s.

Iam actually bringing up the scenarios, Pak Army uses the Toyota and Mitsubishi pick ups jeeps in to patrol and fight the militants. losses can be relatively lowed if the trucks be upgraded into a fully armored passenger area protected by hardened steel and bullet-resistant glass. Like we did to our Gypsys and TATA 407s.

Anyway,...coming back to the topic. What iam saying is, Since Pak doesnt even have automobile company to manufacture it would be better to buy some trucks which can atleats can give some kind of protection from Small arms fire than the Toyota and Mitsubishi pick ups.

Nevertheless, Jeeps were never designed to offer protection against Heavy arms like the armoured carriers. Even the Hummvess suffered considerable losses from guerrilla insurgency.

In fact, AMG provides many HUMVEE parts to Dongfeng, including chassis. The car, maybe was not licensed, but sure is made under permit of AMG. And its engine which is built by Dongfeng is also under the license of Cummins.

That explains why PLA is not showing any interest over the vehicles. This would force them to depend on foreign companices for the spares.

Is there any other option for china, like developing their own engines??

True. I am surprised Indian army is still using gypsy. If i tell anybody abroad that Indian army using gypsy Meri to baeshti kharab ho jayegi. Wats the use of money if u cant buy good stuff for our army.


For the first time i admire pak army acquiring skills. Bloody they modernise there army stuff with begging money. They got land Rovers, Toyota hylux 4x 4, Mitsubishi 4x4, for there police and army. At least they are acquiring fast..

Actually, that claim may be true. If India can develope an LCA Tejas from scratch then there is no reason that they cannot create a HUMVEEish type of military vehicle. But China is still doing a better job at developing weapons accross the board. Their development model is like the Japanese when they were industrializing: copy from existing designs and develope later once experience and technical know-how is gained. India on the other hand is a very proud country (which is highly appreciated by teh West). It will develope from scratch and not merely copy designs. Time will tell which of these development model will give more rewards on the long term...
