China’s Nio is worth more than Ford or General Motors

(ATF) China’s electric vehicle (EV) maker Nio now has a higher market value than General Motors, while Xpeng is close to overtaking Ford. But the incoming Biden administration is expected to take steps to try to ensure that Tesla is not the only US-based EV success story.

Chinese electric vehicle makers Nio and Xpeng have seen an extraordinary surge in their US-listed shares this year that has seen their market values match or exceed those of far longer established US auto makers that not only have much bigger sales but also make a profit.

Nasdaq-listed Nio had a market capitalization of just over $66 billion by the afternoon of Thursday December 17, while NYSE-listed General Motors was worth just under $60 billion.

Xpeng, which is listed on the NYSE, had a market cap of $32 billion, which was close to the value of Ford at just under $36 billion.

Vehicle fires involving electric cars from Xpeng and Li Auto are sparking quality concerns a year after a series of blazes involving Tesla and Nio cars drew widespread media attention.
Why it matters: The incidents come just as Xpeng Motors and Li Auto debut on US stock markets, highlighting issues around EV quality control.
Details: An Xpeng G3 crossover caught fire in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Tuesday, Xpeng Motors reported on microblogging platform Weibo. Local firefighters extinguished the blaze and there were no injuries.

  • An initial investigation showed that the vehicle battery pack was severely damaged from bottom impact, which Xpeng said may have caused the fire.
  • The brand name of the battery was not disclosed. Xpeng started equipping its cars with the NCM 811 batteries from battery giant CATL in 2019, and had earlier sourced batteries from two smaller domestic battery makers.
  • The so-called NCM 811 battery, also used in Tesla and Nio EVs, contains 80% nickel, 10% cobalt, and 10% manganese. It is capable of a longer driving range compared to a lithium iron phospate (LFP) battery, but carries a higher thermal runaway risk.
  • The incident was the first combustion report for Xpeng. A company spokeswoman declined to comment.
  • A week ago, Li Auto said one of its Li One plug-in hybrid vehicles caught fire on an expressway in the southern Chinese city of Zhaoqing. Two passengers were hospitalized and under observation, according to a company announcement (in Chinese).
  • The Nasdaq-listed EV maker blamed the accident on what appeared to be iron bands snagged by the speeding SUV that smashed through the fuel pipe, sparking the fire. The final results from the investigation have not been revealed.
  • This was the second report from Li Auto about a fire involving one of its vehicles. There have been a series of quality complaints ranging from brakes to suspension problems over the past few months. Multiple car owners have requested additional plates to protect the vehicle chassis on the company’s online community forum.
Context: Xpeng is the latest in a number of Chinese EV makers which have filed for a US initial public offering, following rivals Nio and Li Auto. The Alibaba-backed company is looking to build up its war chest amid a stiffer competition in its home market thanks to Tesla.
  • Li Auto delivered 2,516 units in July and Xpeng delivered 1,641 EVs to customers during the same time period. Together, the two EV makers have produced less than half the number of China-made sedans that Tesla has delivered, according to figures from China Passenger Car Association.

EV fires with Chinese batteries expose technology gap

A series of fires in electric vehicles in China recently has raised concerns over the batteries they are equipped with.

According to local media reports, three Aion S sedans -- Chinese automaker GAC’s first pure EV model -- went up in flames on May 18, Aug. 12 and Aug. 23.

Though GAC hasn’t disclosed an official cause for the cases, the most recent fire reportedly started from batteries manufactured by China’s leading battery maker CATL.

GAC’s Aion S sedans are powered by CATL’s NCM (nickel cobalt manganese) 811 batteries, which contain 80 percent nickel, 10 percent cobalt and 10 percent manganese inside cathodes -- one of the four key components of lithium-ion batteries including anodes, electrodes and separators.

The higher the ratio of nickel inside cathodes, the greater energy density lithium-ion batteries achieve, but less stable they become.

“The yield rate of CATL’s battery factory is reported at 45-55 percent, meaning that almost half of CATL’s batteries are defective,” an industry source said. “There could have been an issue when CATL tried to increase the ratio of nickel.”

In comparison, South Korea’s leading battery maker LG Chem has been supplying NCM811 batteries to Tesla Model 3 sedans and is expected to mass-produce NCMA (nickel cobalt manganese aluminum) batteries that contain 90 percent nickel starting next year.

Samsung SDI said it will apply high-nickel technology to its Gen5 NCA (nickel cobalt aluminum) batteries starting next year to increase the ratio of nickel over 88 percent.

SK Innovation is scheduled to supply NCM batteries that contain 95 percent nickel, 5 percent manganese and 5 percent cobalt to Ford F-150 electric pickup trucks starting 2023.

How China Became The World's Largest Electric Vehicle Market

Shanthi Rexaline

This story is the first of a two-part look at China's electric vehicle market.

As nations attempt to cut down on carbon footprints, electric vehicles are becoming a larger and large piece of the equation. For China, this mission is all the more important, as it has the dubious distinction of being the world's largest greenhouse gas producer.

Why China's A Lucrative Market For EV Makers: China, being the most populous country, has the highest demand for transportation. This factor, coupled with the mandate for China to cut down on pollution has made the country turn toward new energy vehicles, or NEVs. They include predominantly battery energy vehicles, or BEVs, as well as fuel cell electric vehicles, or FCEVs, and hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs.

BEVs, or simply EVs, now account for over 80% of the NEVs sold in China.

China spent about $60 billion between 2009 and 2017 to develop the domestic EV industry in a bid to increase the nation's competitiveness in the automobile industry, reduce demand for imported oil and improve air quality, The Diplomat reported, citing Scott Kennedy of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

China's EV market is about three to four times that of the U.S., and the multiple is only going to get bigger, a McKinsey report said. The firm said this will propel Chinese EV makers into the global arena, manufacturing EVs, batteries and charging infrastructure.

Tesla and NIO Fires Spur Electric-Car Safety Checkups in China

China is ordering carmakers to conduct checks on electric vehicles after cars made by Tesla Inc. and NIO Inc. caught on fire, spurring anxiety over the safety of battery-powered automobiles.
Companies need to check for potential safety hazards with battery boxes, waterproof protection in cars, high-voltage wiring harnesses, as well as on-board charging devices, the country’s industry and technology ministry said in a statement posted on its website. Automakers need to submit their findings by the end of October.

The order comes after a run of fires involving EVs in what is the world’s biggest market for the new technology. NIO -- a Nasdaq-listed electric car startup from Beijing with aspirations to rival Tesla -- said Friday one of its ES8 SUVs caught fire, the third time in about two months the model has been involved in an incident. Tesla said it was investigating after video of one of its cars bursting into flames in Shanghai spread on Chinese social media in April. Weeks later, there were reports of a Tesla Model S combusting in Hong Kong.
The Chinese ministry said safety checks should also be carried out on cars that have already been sold, with special attention paid to highly used vehicles such as cabs, according to the statement.
Lithium Batteries

Electric cars are increasingly using high-density lithium batteries to extend their driving ranges, as demand for the vehicles climbs. A mix of subsidies and favorable policies helped push Chinese EV sales beyond 1 million units last year, luring a raft of newcomers to the business.
In 2018, China recorded at least 40 fire-related incidents involving new-energy vehicles, a fleet that includes pure battery electric, hybrid plug-in and fuel-cell vehicles, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation. The watchdog has called for scrutiny of NEV quality and recalled more than 130,000 cars last year.
China isn’t the only place where EV fires are on the radar. Audi said June 10 it is recalling its first all-electric vehicle sold in the U.S. because of the risk of battery fire. About 540 E-Tron SUVs have been voluntarily recalled on risk that moisture can seep into the battery cell through a wiring harness glitch. Talks with German authorities about a potential recall in Europe are ongoing, Audi spokesman Udo Ruegheimer said last week.
NIO Probe
NIO is cooperating with an official investigation into an ES8 fire in Shanghai, with the cause of the blaze to be made public once the report is finalized, said Izzy Zhu, a NIO vice president in charge of user development. NIO its conducting its own probe into last Friday’s fire, the company said in a separate statement.

EVs are no more prone to accidents or fires than gasoline-powered cars -- and might be less so, according to a 2017 report by the U.S.’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But that report also notes battery technology is still evolving and there isn’t a consensus on safe system design.

BYD Reveals Ultra-Safe Blade Battery: Pierces It With A Nail

BYD Blade Battery leverages safety and improves volumetric energy density. Blade Battery will debut in the BYD Han (June 2020).

The Chinese battery and EV tycoon BYD officially launched its all-new Blade Battery, which within the next few months will debut in first electric models.
The Blade Battery is essentially a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, but in a new approach to significantly increase safety and volumetric energy density as well as reduce costs.
"At an online launch event themed “The Blade Battery – Unsheathed to Safeguard the World”, Wang Chuanfu, BYD Chairman and President, said that the Blade Battery reflects BYD’s determination to resolve issues in battery safety while also redefining safety standards for the entire industry."
To improve the batteries, BYD changed the conventional prismatic LFP cells into thinner and longer cells, which were designed to become structural parts (beams) of the pack. That simplifies the pack design.

One person was killed and six were seriously injured in an explosion at a factory in China operated by a subsidiary of battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), authorities said on Friday.

Thursday’s blast happened in a workshop belonging to Guangdong Brunp Recycling Technology in the city of Ningxiang, in the southern province of Hunan, the city government said on its official Weibo account.

Fourteen people with minor injuries were among those taken to hospital, but none were in a life-threatening condition, it added.

Brunp said it had doused a blaze following the explosion, caused by waste aluminium foil catching fire.

In a statement, it apologised for the impact of the accident, offered condolences to victims and their families and vowed to ensure safe production.

CATL said in a statement the incident would have limited impact on overall production and operations.

In a note, Daiwa Capital Markets said the factory was an old one, with annual production capacity of 15,000 tonnes of cathode precursors for CATL’s lithium-ion batteries, although Brunp also had a newer and much larger plant.

CATL’s Shenzhen-traded shares closed Friday down 2.1% at 404.50 yuan ($62.55).

China’s 2020 auto market is greater than the sum of Europe and the United States: EU’s auto sales in 2020 were 9.9 million, and the U.S. sold 14.5 million vehicles. China actually sold 25.3 million vehicles, which is greater than the sum of Europe and America’s 24.4 million vehicles!

The most important thing is that the Chinese car market is stable, while Europe and the United States have fallen, especially the EU car sales plummeted by 24%.

China has a population of 1.4 billion, and now the EU and the United States have a population of less than 800 million. It is estimated that it will be normal for the Chinese auto market to exceed the sum of Europe and the United States in a few years.

About 25.3 million new vehicles were sold in 2020 in the world's largest auto market, led by trucks, according to preliminary numbers from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

On the evening of the 19th, a netizen posted a message on social platforms that a Tesla Model 3 caught fire in a residential area in Minhang District, Shanghai, and it was “exploded” in an underground garage.

After the news of the fire was exposed on the Internet, the safety of Tesla's products has again caused discussion, especially since Tesla has had several spontaneous fires before. For example, in April 2019, in the basement of a residential district in Shanghai, a statically parked Tesla Model S spontaneously ignited and caused an explosion in a very short time; and not long ago, a 2015 Tesla Model S was in the United States. A suspected spontaneous combustion event occurred. On December 13, the owner’s wife tweeted to ask Tesla for an explanation.

G.M.’s Electric Car Push Could Put China in the Driver’s Seat

With government support and lavish subsidies, Chinese companies have come to dominate the market for batteries, motors and other essentials Detroit may need for its new fleets.

... ...

SHANGHAI — The business of making cars has reached a critical juncture — and it looks as if China is in the driver’s seat.
General Motors’ surprise announcement on Thursday that it aspires to eliminate gasoline and diesel cars from its fleet by 2035 and embrace electric cars follows a road map successfully drawn by Beijing. To get there, G.M., the Detroit stalwart and symbol of American industrial might, may have no choice but to embrace car and battery technologies in which Chinese companies play leading roles.
Even when setting the time frame, G.M. seems to be matching Beijing’s speed. Just three months ago, Chinese policymakers ordered that most vehicles sold in China must be electric by 2035.
“When it comes to global automakers’ electric vehicle plans, all roads lead back to Beijing,” said Michael Dunne, a former president of G.M.’s Indonesia operations.
