The Sharp Sword not only looks viable as a low observable aircraft from many angles--save for the distinctly non-stealthy exhaust, it looks like it is an original design, one engineer says. Asked about the structural model for the Chinese stealth bomber, the engineer says that his unfortunate conclusion is that the aircraft is in fact a viable design.

While China is not yet an adversary of the Unites States, there is potential that as the country continues to reemerge as a great economic and military power that it could become one. In that case it would be foolish to underestimate the capabilities of Chinese engineers. "They have talented designers," one engineer says.

Chinese aerospace is going great guns, but one major snag is the engines. They are not quite there yet with quality and metallurgy

Sadly, that is true. But with all the money and manpower they invest in, I believe they will be there.

Renaissance means "re-birth."

How legit is the title-phrase "Chinese aerospace renaissance?" It suggests that China actually ever had an aerospace industry, which went dormant, and now is rising again. In reality, China never really had any aerospace industry. It has one today, and it is on the rise.

There is no renaissance.

Hongdu, Chengdu, Shengyang, Xian, etc and more are all aerospace institutes in China that have been designing and mass producing airframes from the 60's 70's and 80's. True many of their designs and products were license productions or joint ventures with the Soviets, but they were still being produced en mass with their entire supply lines in China with indegenization of airframes gradually implemented over the decades..

What you thought they just woke up in the 2000's and started designing J20's and J31's? It all had humble beginnings in the 60's with programmes like Q5's, J5's J6's and J7's...
