Today the Australian minister complained about China putting pressure on Qantas to correct their maps about Taiwan. A few months ago there was a major uproar in Australia about China secretly trying to influence Australian politics. Relations are at an all time low.

Yesterday Malaysia new ethnic Chinese Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng accused Big Chinese companies of major corruption in government contracts with previous corrupt government of Najib. Malaysia has also cancelled 2 high-speed rail projects that were given to Chinese companies - billions of dollars.

In Philippines the generals and public are now sick of Duterte and his ass-kissing of the Chinese and the Filipino people hate China occupation of Spratly Islands.

In Pakistan......their best friend in the world, people are starting to notice that Chinese companies are getting Pakistan economy trapped in a debt trap.

In Hong Kong - young Hong Kong people hate mainland Chinese and mainland China immigrants.

Even in tiny Maldives.....opposition leaders are saying that the corrupt government is selling out the islands too Chinese and sticking the country in a debt trap.

Sri-Lanka already know what the Chinese debt trap is. They have to pay millions in interest every year for projects that are white elephants.

The Chinese game plan for the Asian region and beyond has a very clear pattern: Use corrupt politicians to buy your way into developing countries, and develop major project that have little value for the people that use Chinese capital, and Chinese Labor which then financially traps poorer strategically located countries into a perpetual debt trap.

Support any dictator as long as they give China access to ports and resources and military facilities.

If I as an individual can figure this out; I dont think it will take these countries too long.

You have to be pretty narrow-minded not to see the irony of this statement coming from an AMERICAN:

"Gaining and maintaining access for U.S. bases has often involved close collaboration with despotic governments."

The leaders of those countries selling out to China don't care if they burden their next 3 generations in debt and build useless projects that don't actually help their economy. All they care about are the kickbacks and bribes they recieve from the Chinese. So of course they already figured it out, but they're not going to do anything about it. They will promote and use the anti American sentiment in their populations to justify selling out to their national sovereignty, and their gullible populations will swallow it up. Just like the Sri Lankans and especially the pakistanis.

Mahathir is moving Malaysia back closer to Japan. Many Malaysians are calling the Chinese Mega projects like High-speed Rail a debt trap.

The people of Malaysia are starting to smell the roses and uncover all the corruption where the previous government was selling out to China.

China withholds port deal’s final tranche to Sri Lanka

Colombo:

China has withheld the Hambantota Port deal’s final tranche of $585 million to Sri Lanka due to Colombo’s objection over its plan to use a man-made island for entertainment purposes, a media report said on Sunday.

In December last year, Sri Lanka handed over the control of the sea port of Hambantota to China on a 99-year lease for $1.12 billion, amid concern over Beijing’s efforts to expand influence in the region. Opposition leaders have dubbed the deal as a sell out to China.

The SundayTimes reported that the last tranche of $585 million has been held back by China’s state-owned China Merchants Port Holdings which want the land to be used for entertainment purpose.

However the Sri Lanka Ports Authority insists that the facilities at Hambantota should only be used for marine and port-related activities and not for entertainment tourism purposes, the report said.

It quoted the Chinese firm as saying that the money would only be transferred after the issue is resolved. The port was a Chinese-assisted infrastructure project in the home district of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa PTI

So the Chinks want to convert the area into a red light district along with casinos, bars and massage parlors too!!
:basanti:

Well, that's the price Sri lanka will have to pay for flirting with the Chinese! I hope they've learnt their lessons. Let's not talk about Gwadar. We'll do so when it's converted into another Chinese sleaze zone, which will be sooner than later! :biggrin2:

There is a problem with that strategy. In order to gain anything by it they have to keep financing the corrupt politicians and their governments when they can't pay. China has created two perpetual debt traps in Pakistan and Venezuela, when they cut off the taps those leaders will not be so friendly to China and if there is a coup d'etat China will have nothing to show for it. Building dependence by way of welfare never works because at some point, you run out of money.

Chinese economy is slowing and its capacity to fund other nations projects is also decreasing. On the other hand, US and India coming closer along with ASEAN countries can be a formidable force to thwart Chinese domination.
USA along with India, ASEAN countries, Japan, SoKOrea and Australia can be the most powerful group in ASIA with democratic nations at the top. Huge potential for trade among them with US leadership.
China and its friend Paki will be cut to their size. Keep watching emerging dynamics.
Phillipines Duterte will be gone soon. Malaysian Mahathir is moving away from China...Myanmar wants to diversify towards other nations...this is the early trend in Indo-Pacific region...
