China’s OBOR could be far more dangerous than colonialism. Here’s why

Published May 10, 2017 SOURCE: ET China’s vast ambitions will be on display next week when it advertises its epic One Belt, One Road (Obor) initiative in front of an impressive international audience with leaders and delegates from 138 countries, representing a formidable geographic and political spread. The scale is audacious, the idea troubling. So where in the world is America on this big play by China? Answer: Partly hawking private business opportunities to the Chinese and partly engaging in a very public bromance with President Xi Jinping with a small helping of ‘unpredictability’ on the side. Last week, Nicole Kushner Meyer, the sister of Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, was in Beijing telling the Chinese how an investment in her family’s luxury apartment complex could help them get ‘investor’ visas at $500,000 a piece. They should move quickly before the rules change or the price goes up. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, meanwhile, spoke to anxious US diplomats about Trump’s foreign policy. The speech was remarkable for its deeply appreciative portrait of China. It was all but a bow to the ‘new type of great power relations’ that Xi has been asking for some time. Point of note: Tillerson did not once mention India in his 6,500 word-long speech — not in the context of Asia, Asia-Pacific, the wide, wide world or the universe. It was a scratch-your-head moment. A strategic partnership that was meant to fix the future and balance the power of China surely deserved a definitive iteration by the US’ chief diplomat in his first real speech. Folks, so there you have it. Some say India must exercise ‘strategic patience’ because the US focus always rests on allies and adversaries, and India is neither. And every US president begins with a China-first policy. Trump’s bromance — albeit a little more passionate — has been every president’s first instinct ever since Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger opened the floodgates. Jimmy Carter campaigned on the promise not to kowtow and have real relations with Taiwan, but the Chinese stared him down. Ronald Reagan, too, backpedalled on Taiwan. Bill Clinton famously proclaimed during his campaign he won’t sup with the “butchers of Beijing”, only to become China’s most high-powered advocate. He was prone to telling Indian diplomats that China was where the real action was, India was a sideshow. Barack Obama dreamed of a G-2 for the first two years and then pivoted. New Delhi has been patient with America’s regular flirtations. But patience is not a good enough answer to Obor. As Aparna Pande of the Hudson Institute says, “The Indian Ocean region is critical to India’s security and economy Apart from having long-standing historical, cultural, religious and commercials ties with countries in the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions, India has faced threats from land-based empires in ancient and medieval times, while during the colonial era, the conquerors — Dutch, Portuguese, French and the British — came to India via the sea. US officials insist — and rightly so — that the strategic convergence with India on the perils of Chinese assertiveness can only grow, and that the fundamentals of India-US relations are strong. But they look away when asked to square the comforting view with Trump’s ostentatious admiration for Xi and the daily accommodation of China. Last heard, Trump was dithering on an arms package for Taiwan to avoid hurting Beijing’s feelings and jeopardising its help on the North Korea crisis. It’s another matter that Xi has done nothing concrete to earn the many free passes. In fact, so emboldened is Xi that ahead of the April summit, he reportedly demanded Trump sack Admiral Harry Harris, head of the US Pacific Command, as a price for Chinese help on North Korea. This is the background against which China is set to make its biggest geopolitical play, a plan unprecedented in scale and worrisome in scope. Even in its most benign avatar — if Chinese characters are to be believed that it’s all about connectivity, stupid — it still gives Beijing unprecedented influence on the political economy of 65 countries. India has been arguing for some time that the strategic implications of Obor and its subset, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), are immense not just for India but for the wider world. The truth is, Obor is not Globalisation 2.0 but Dominance 3.0. If colonialism was about super exploitation and western dominance, Obor could be both Chinese dominance and resource extraction with far greater planning and penetration

Pak's Western region has already become an Autonomous Region of China but not said publicly. Thousands of hectares in GB, POK and Balochistan have been gifted to their masters without them paying a pie for the land given to them by the Pak govt for the CPEC!

Gwadar Port has been handed over to their Chinese masters on a 40 year lease, extendable indefinitely. 5000 sq km of Kashmir territory in the Sakshgam Valley had already been gifted to their masters in 1963. The Chinese have almost taken over half their stock exchange. Their cheap goods, mostly fake and poor quality have flooded Paki markets and put their industries out of business!

And it's gonna get worse. But it seems ok for the Pakis as a Louis Vuitton Bag that costs $150,000 is available for Rs 500 PKR in Paki markets! Chinese fakes galore!!

After Nepal signs up, China experts believe India will join One Belt One Road initiative too

India is the only South Asian country that has not joined China's ambitious One Belt One Road framework agreement. After Nepal signed up for China's economic strategy, Chinese foreign policy experts have claimed that this will force India to join in the future or face isolation.

After Nepal signed up for China’s economic strategy, Chinese foreign policy experts have claimed that it will force India to join in the future or face isolation, The Indian Express reported on Saturday. Interestingly, India is the only South Asian country that has not joined China’s ambitious One Belt One Road framework agreement so far. In a move that may worry India, Nepal, on Friday, inked a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping for the OBOR initiative which links Asia with Europe. The decision to sign the agreement comes ahead of the One Belt One Road (OBOR) forum in Beijing on May 14 and 15. Heads of state of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Myanmar will attend the forum as will high-level delegations from Bangladesh and Nepal, agencies reported.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Yu Hong and Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Shankar Bairagi signed a MoU at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singhadurbar, Kathmandu. Nepal’s deputy Prime Minister, minister of Finance Krishna Bahadur Mahara and minister for Foreign Affairs Prakash Sharan Mahat were present during the signing ceremony, PTI reported. Nepal officials have said this will open new vistas for enhanced Chinese investment in the country, which will also reduce Nepal’s trade deficit.

Meanwhile, Nepal is the last country in the South Asian region to sign into OBOR with the exception of Bhutan, but it has no diplomatic ties with China. Additionally, India is yet to finalise its attendance at the forum and is reserved about the initiative, citing sovereignty issues over China’s involvement in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

On India’s confirmation on participation in the forum, China Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang told IE, “As far as I know, there are Indian scholars participating in relevant activities during the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.” Meanwhile, Chinese experts warned that India may be isolated in the region, despite its considerable influence, in the near future, if its stance on ties with China continued.

Hu Shisheng, Director of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, told IE that if India does not participate in the Belt and Road Initiative, something all her neighbours are positive about, then the neighbours will have a cause to complain. He said that it is not constructive for India and will reduce its appeal in the region. He claimed that northern states in India will benefit from the Nepal-China agreement, and it may even compel the Indian government to reconsider its stance on OBOR.

Nonsense propaganda from FE. India does not need OBOR, neither does much of the rest of the world, evident from the "warm reception" given to OBOR conference in China this week.

A slew of such articles appearing in #presstitute media is indicative enough of who's feeling the isolation.

S. Korea to attend Silk Road summit
3:46 am, May 13, 2017

ReutersSEOUL (Reuters) — South Korea has accepted a last-minute invitation from China to a conference on a new Silk Road, days after a new president took office on Seoul pledging to engage in discussions with Beijing to ease tension over a U.S. antimissile system.

Chinese President Xi Jinping extended the invitation to the Belt and Road conference in Beijing during a telephone call on Thursday with new South Korean President Moon Jae In, Moon’s spokesman, Yoon Young Chan, told a briefing on Friday.

Ties between South Korea and China, who are important trade partners, have been strained by Seoul’s decision to host a U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) antimissile system in response to a growing missile threat from North Korea.

Moon will send a delegation headed by Park Byeong Seug, a veteran member of parliament and a senior official of Moon’s liberal Democratic Party, Yoon said

Of course, it's not surprising that Moon, the son of NoKo immigrants, who owes China a bucketful of gratitude for facilitating his election is now repaying the favour by gracing the OBOR meeting, to provide some semblance of respect to this.

This man will be a greater threat to SoKo than Kim fatty fatty.

Spot on! This is nothing but a photo op with some tasty delicacies to boot. This OBOR is all hype. And then it would take at least 45-50 years for completion. By then the world would probably have ended! And most of us even before that!!

Nah, u know zilch about the new SK prez. Moon Jae-in, or SK politics.

He was not a son of NoKo "immigrant". His parents were refugees. Perhaps millions of Koreans fled the communists to the South during the Korean War (when Koreans still deemed their country as ONE). Moon served in SK military, and he was arrested twice for protests against former military dictatorships (1950s-1990s).

The fall of Park was due to her corruption / nepotism scandals -
Impeachment of Park Geun-hye. That facilitated the rise of the opposition - Moon, not Chinese. S.Koreans were shocked to learn their Prez. (Park) had been manipulated by her confidants and extorted $$$ from mega corporations.

The former prez. Park (Left, remarked as "friendly with Japan" in below pic) screwed up relations with China. Now prez. elect Moon (Right, shown as "anti-Japan") is going to mend bilateral relations.

South Korea’s Ruling Party Calls for Public Hearing On US THAAD Deployment

China, who vociferously protested the installment of THAAD, conducted live-fire drills and tested new weapons once the system was deployed, as Beijing feels the system’s radar could be used to spy on their military activity.
China is crushing South Korea's tourism industry
That's the lesson South Korea is learning the hard way. The country suffered a 40% plunge in Chinese visitors last month, according to the Korea Tourism Organization.

Chinese tour groups have been canceling trips because of anger over the deployment of a controversial U.S.-built missile defense system in South Korea. Chinese authorities are believed to have told travel agencies last month to stop selling trips to South Korea.

Au contraire I know more about him than would make you comfortable. That you see the need to jump in to defend Moon with all the accompanying paraphernalia clearly indicates that.

Are u kidding? Defending what? Is it so hard to talk with facts and senses?

In the last prez. election Moon was only 2% narrowly behind Park. This time with all the scandals surrounding Park's camp (Conservative / Right Wing) and being so divided they even failed to field a strong candidate so it wasn't that hard for Moon ( Progressive / Left Wing) to run ahead from the very beginning.

India is concerned only with CPEC with this one belt which will not be completed as this is in disputed indian terrotary , just two blast in balochistan targetting labourers and when pakistan whole leadership in china this is coming from pakistan:

Hafiz Saeed spreading terrorism in name of jihad: Pakistan

LAHORE: Mumbai terror attack mastermind and Jamat-ud Dawah (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed and his four aides have been detained for "spreading terrorism in the name of jihad", Pakistan's interior ministry has told a judicial review board.

Saeed appeared before the board yesterday and told it that he had been detained by the Pakistani government+ in order to stop him for raising voice for Kashmiris.

However, the interior ministry rejected his arguments and told the three-member board that Saeed and his four aides have been detained for "spreading terrorism in the name of jihad"+ .

The board comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan of the Supreme Court (head), Justice Ayesha A Malik of Lahore High Court and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail of Balochistan High Court directed the ministry to submit a complete record regarding detention of Saeed and his aides - Zafar Iqbal, Abdul Rehman Abid, Abdullah Ubaid and Qazi Kashif Niaz on next hearing on May 15.

The board also sought personal appearance of the attorney general of Pakistan on next hearing.

Police produced Saeed and his four aides before the board at Lahore registry of the apex court amid high security. A large number of Saeed's supporters gathered outside the court.

Saeed's counsel advocate A K Dogar was also present but the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chose to plead his case before the court.

"The allegations levelled by the government against me had never been proved by any state institution. My organisation and I have been victimised for raising voice for freedom of Kashmir and criticising the government's weak policy on the Kashmir issue," Saeed said.

He said that he had been placed under house in order to stop him for raising voice for Kashmiri people.

Saeed appealed to the board to set aside the Punjab government's detention order.

"The government detained the JuD leaders on pressure of United Nations and international organisations," an official representing the federal interior ministry told the board.

Last Thursday Lahore High Court division bench had questioned as why Saeed and others were not presented before a review board before the government issued notification for extension to his detention for another 90 days.

On April 30, detention of Saeed and his four aides was extended by the Punjab government for another 90 days under preventive detention+ under 11 EEE (I) and 11D of Anti- Terrorism Act 1997.

The Punjab government on January 30 had put these five under house arrest in Lahore for their involvement in activities which can be prejudicial to peace and security.

The government has also placed JuD and FIF under second schedule of the anti-terrorism act.

    • The Nawaz government had reportedly taken action against Saeed after the US clearly told Islamabad that in case of not taking action against JuD and Saeed it may face sanctions.

JuD is said to be the front for the banned Lashkar-e- Taiba (LeT). The organisation has been declared as a foreign terrorist organisation' by the US in June 2014.

Saeed and his aides said in their petition that the government detained them without any legal justification. They said the UN resolution followed by the government did not seek detention of any citizen.

"The detention of the JuD leaders is a simple case of mala fide intention and ulterior motive on part of the government as it has been done so to please India and the United States," the petition said.

Worse than colonialism? You are putting the threat into very mild category but in truth you have no idea how dangerous it is.. This label was just the tip of the iceberg and 95% of the iceberg remains under water and out of sight but let me shade some light on it for you..

The Chinese uprising is just history repeating itself nothing more or less.... China is 2.0 Mongol empire hence they are there distant cousins in the human geneology tree perhaps less warrior like than the Mongols but equally vicious that part they are the same and inherit the same. Once China exits it's borders they will commit massacre's unknown to humanity and at an alarming rate of bloodsheed and irrelevant most of the time just for the sake of killing in the same vein as the mongols. The World has never seen anything like the Mongols before them and after them but China could change all of that and bring back the great horror of the 12th century at much greater scale..

China in my honest opinion is the greatest human tragedy waiting to happen in human history and once it happens the world will be in absolutely horrific shock.

Majority of the Americans see them as world hegemony competition wrongfully but they might be sitting in front of something entirely different which is the greatest tragedy waiting to happen and I am afraid the US is not capable of stopping them militarily anywhere and NATO itself might not be able to do that which is also extremely doubtful as they are accelerating at rapid pace in their military growth development which is even more scary and horrific..

They are very pragmatic so once they conquer Asia and Europe they will bite into the local population numbers systemtically until they have left tiny small minority enough that they can control
