China released pictures from its "first high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) [Gaofen-3] satellite."

The resolution is one meter.

Interestingly, a more advanced Gaofen-5 satellite is scheduled for launch in six months.

"Gaofen-5 hyerspectral satellite is planned to be launched in September 2017."

India already has a constellation of Hi resolution SAR satellites and being used for last several years.

India's SAR satellite was built by NASA in the US.

Not the same thing.

Here are three high resolution images of Indian cities taken from Aerial Services & Digital Mapping Area (AS&DMA) of National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO. AS&DMA has two digital cameras, Vexcel’s ULTRACAM-D Large Format Digital camera and Enerquest’s medium format camera with CCD pixel dimension of 9 µm. With the Large Format Digital Camera a resolution of upto 3 cm is achieved.

CARTOSAT 2A which was used during the surgical strikes in Pakistan. These can be zoomed in to read the number plates of vehicles. It has a resolution of < 0.5 m.

India does not build semiconductors and all of the sensors on the so-called "Indian" SAR satellite was imported from the West.

The technology and the components of the "Indian" SAR satellite were both imported.

China's SAR satellite technology is indigenous.

China deserves credit for building INDIGENOUS advanced technology. You can trace all Chinese technologies from primitive prototypes all of the way to advanced state-of-the-art mature technologies.

On the other hand, some countries import US technology and claim they have state-of-the-art tech. This is not the case. It is merely imported American technology.

When the US refuses to give you parts, your imported technology dies on the vine. It's not yours.

Pulling out your checkbook to buy an imported American SAR satellite does not make it "Indian." It is merely a purchased American SAR satellite.

India is a mere USER of American SAR satellite technology.

In contrast, in this thread, I'm talking about INDIGENOUS Chinese SAR satellite technology.

Let's use common sense.

When India buys a TESLA, does that mean India owns TESLA technology? No, India can't built a TESLA electric vehicle.

Similarly, India bought an American SAR satellite. Does that mean India possesses SAR satellite technology? No. It only means you bought American technology.

The Chinese SAR satellite provides black-and-white images in one meter.

Western SAR satellites provide color images in one meter.

China slowly climbs the technological ladder with indigenous invention.

Other countries buy from the West and claim the technology as their own. This is silly. The credit for the technology still belongs to the West.

In this thread, I'm discussing China's progression of indigenous technology. Earlier Chinese images were 2 to 4 meter black-and-white SAR pictures. Now, we're down to one meter for China.

In contrast, we have India (a nation without the ability to build semiconductors) that claims to have color resolution to rival Western SAR satellites. Guess what? Those are Western SAR sensors.

If you want to claim that Western SAR satellites are currently better than China's hi-res SAR satellite, that is true. However, India does not possess INDIGENOUS technology for SAR satellites. India buys Western SAR sensors.

I want to make it clear that this problem of claiming credit for other people's technology is not limited to India.

Japan imports American turbofan engines and they give you the impression that the F-2 fighter is indigenous.

The Japanese F-2 fighter is imported American technology.

Japan has never built its own turbofan engine.

The Japanese F-2 uses a licensed General Electric F110 turbofan engine. This means the United States ships the engine assembly equipment and the titanium-alloy fan blades to Japan. All of the parts and assembly equipment are American.

Is China's J-10 fighter a big deal? Yes it is, because there is a J-10 prototype with an INDIGENOUS Chinese WS-10A turbofan engine.

China has gone further in aerospace technology with its WS-10A turbofan engine than Japan ever did.

China is Asia's technology leader. That is why I'm here in these threads to chronicle the leader of ASIAN technology. It is interesting to see how much China has closed the gap with the West.

An eye on neighborhood, Pakistan has filed 886 and Bangladesh with 340 patent & India with 45,658 patent applications.

India trumps many upper middle income countries in per capita terms being from lower middle income group, while Chinese citizens are 6th most innovative people on planet, ahead of many developed countries.

But certain countries lag behind others in certain technology while lead in other certain. Comparison in technology isn't fair, you have mastered A technology but not B. Other has mastered B technology but no A.

Ignorance is bliss, what about Risat 1 ? Ever heard about it ?. Risat 2 was launched before risat 1 as it had an Isreal SAR. Risat 1 was indigenous and check out the year it was launched.

This is not that hard to understand. India's heavy-launch rocket uses Russian rocket engines. It is RUSSIAN technology and not an indigenous Indian rocket. See? It is another country's technology.

Buying critical Russian rocket engines to launch a rocket does not make the rocket Indian. It is still Russian. Without the Russian rocket engines, the "Indian" rocket cannot be launched.

Similarly, western electronics and sensors assembled in India does not make it Indian technology. It is still a western satellite that is merely assembled in India.

Satellite sensors are based on semiconductors and electronics.

China's most advanced semiconductor fabrication plant is run by SMIC, which produces advanced semiconductors with 28nm width.

India has no commercial semiconductor plants.

Since India does not produce any modern semiconductors that are the critical part for satellite sensors, it is impossible for India to indigenously produce a more advanced sensor than China's.

Hence, simple deductive reasoning means India imports critical western semiconductors and satellite sensors.

You fool isro has small fab facility also
At the micron level, not at the nanometer level.

India is about 10 to 20 years behind the rest of the world. Also, that is only a research lab and has never produced chips for commercial use.
