China has almost finished construction of the 9th Type 052D second-generation AESA-radar destroyer at Dalian (see third picture below). China has also started construction of the 12th Type 052D destroyer.

Additionally, the 24th Chinese Type 054A frigate is ready for sea trials.

According to the US Department of Defense, China's YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missile (which is carried on the Chinese Type 052D destroyer) has a range of 290 nautical miles or 330 statute miles.

In comparison, the Russian-Indian Brahmos has a much shorter range of 160 nautical miles.

The Chinese YJ-18 ASCM has almost twice the range of a Russian-Indian Brahmos.

You know, if PRC wants to troll Taiwan, they should name one of their future 052Ds as "Taipei."

IHS Jane's says the Brahmos has a 292-km range.

The Brahmos has a short range for two reasons. Firstly, Russia is not permitted to export a missile to India that exceeds the MTCR limit of 300km. Secondly, the Brahmos is a Mach 3 supersonic missile that burns a huge amount of fuel throughout its flight.

In contrast, the Chinese YJ-18 ASCM is subsonic in flight and becomes Mach 3 only in the terminal stage (which is 25 miles from its target). Hence, the large discrepancy in range between the Chinese YJ-18 ASCM and the Brahmos.

India aims to supply BrahMos cruise missiles to Vietnam | IHS Jane's

"Foremost among the proposed materiel is the joint India-Russia-developed BrahMos anti-ship cruise missile featuring a 292 km strike range...."

The Type 052D destroyer is an upgraded Type 052C destroyer (see picture below).

The first difference is the size of the four-paneled AESA radar. The Type 052C has four convex S-band radar panels. The Type 052D has four much larger flat square S-band panels. This means two things. The emitting and transmitting area of the AESA radar is significantly larger. Also, China seemed to have solved the cooling issue with the Type 052C destroyer panels. There is a good probability that China can send more power into each AESA module. The result is a longer range and accurate Type 052D destroyer AESA radar (which is called the Type 346 AESA radar).

The Tpe 517M anti-stealth radar on the Type 052C destroyer has been upgraded to the Type 518 L-band anti-stealth radar on the Type 052D destroyer. We can safely assume a software upgrade in addition to the hardware upgrade.

The Type 052C destroyer has 48 VLS (ie. vertically launched system) missile compartments. The Type 052D has an increased 64 VLS missile compartments. I think the Type 052D compartments are larger and more versatile in holding larger missiles or a multitude of smaller missiles per compartment. The Type 052C missiles are cold-launched. The Type 052D missiles can be either cold-launched or hot-launched (if launch speed is a priority).

Six Chinese Type 052C destroyers are in service. Four Type 052D destroyers are also in service. China has finished building the ninth Type 052D destroyer and it's undergoing sea trials. China is partway through the construction of its 12th Type 052D destroyer, which should be the last of its class. The next Chinese destroyer is the Type 055 with a dual X-band and S-band AESA radar. Supposedly, the Type 055 destroyer is already under construction.

The Chinese Type 052D destroyer is the first ship to deploy the YJ-18 Mach 3 terminal-stage maneuverable warhead.

[The YJ-18] will travel at subsonic speed initially, and at Mach 3 when approaching the target within last 46 kilometers. What's amazing is that the missile can change its path showing 'S' pattern making it hard to intercept, even for Aegis class ships as claimed by the report."

The Chinese YJ-18 ASCM travels at 600 miles per hour and increases to 2,000 miles per hour within 25 miles of its target. Before striking the target, the YJ-18 warhead maneuvers evasively to avoid countermeasures.

China’s New YJ-18 Antiship Cruise Missile: Capabilities and Implications for U.S. Forces in the Western Pacific | Andrew S. Erickson

"Speed: The YJ-18 has a subsonic cruise speed, reportedly about 600 miles per hour (mph), or Mach 0.8.2 Media reports suggest that when the missile is about 20 nautical miles (nm) from its target, the warhead accelerates to supersonic speed, reportedly up to Mach 3.0. The more fuel-efficient subsonic stage of the YJ-18’s flight increases its overall range, and the supersonic terminal flight stage reduces the time adversary forces have to engage the missile.

Range: According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the YJ-18 has a range of 290 nm. The YJ-18’s predecessor on many Chinese submarines, the YJ-82, has a range of about 20 nm."

This means that it does not have remjet and it nust be a 2 stage missile. It should be very very heavy looking to its specification or it should have a very short range.

The Chinese YJ-18 has an efficient turbojet with a terminal-phase ramjet engine.

The Chinese YJ-18 has a range of 290 nautical miles (or 330 statute miles). This is almost twice the range of the Russian-Indian Brahmos with a range of 160 nautical miles.
