And Type 003 is a smaller conventional powered carrier compared to the upcoming Type 004!

China is going very big with her carriers. (Even the current STOBAR carriers at 65000 tons is pretty big being the same size as the QE.)

A few large modules have been spotted in jiangnan shipyard, but no 'official' rumor as of now.

One less lift and one less catapult. But that could mean more room in the hangar without the lift and catapult mechanisms in the way. Operational doctrines are probably a quite bit different.

Rumors of some in Dalian. In fact, many Chinese suspect that Type 004 (or the first one) will be built in Dalian not Shanghai-Jiangnan. Dalian shipyard CEO had post about a CVN in Weibo before getting it scrubbed.

Type 002 was built in Dalian. Type 003 being built in Shanghai. Type 004 back in Dalian? Also there might be a second Type 003. China likes to build in pairs to advantage of economy of scale for manufacture and support.

This graphic is from many years ago -- before Shandong was built. It was based on what people saw in the inventory of an official model maker for the PLA. Its prediction had been pretty accurate with CV 17 (Shandong) and 18 (Type 003.) Following this graphic, we should get CV 19 (second Type 003) before Type 004 CVNs.

With two carrier capable shipyards, it is possible that there could be concurrent building of second Type 003 at same time as first Type 004!

IMO, a little exaggeration about the Dimensions of the 003's flight deck...lol.
we have read too many such inflated speculation these years.
any way this is just a 80,000 ton class vessel.

and Step 2 has begun as well. this would be a CATOBAR Carrier / conventional power / steam Catapult / 68000-8000 tons displacement(normal and full)...and it is constructed in East China, and another one might be constructed in Dalian Shipyard where the two STOBAR carrier were constructed. this is Type 002... If there is no accident, around in 2023, it would be ready for commission. the construction period should be around 6-7 years...

due to the faster pace of the research and development, the EMALS has won over the steam catapult system in the comparative test. the construction of Type 003 first vessel was halted for a while and the design institute changed some layouts and construction drawings...we are expecting the commission happening in 2024 now, coz there was some 'accident'...lol

and the second vessel of Type 003( I'm afraid that it is not called 004) would be built in JN shipyard as well. some super blocks have been seen.... the true Type 004(nuclear powered of course) should be emerged in north china. and that important final time dot might be around 2030
