A Chinese government spokesman said US President Barack Obama should be especially sympathetic to China's opposition to the Dalai Lama and Tibetan independence, as a black president who lauded Abraham Lincoln for helping abolish slavery.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made the comments at a news conference on Thursday, four days before Obama arrives in China for a summit that will cover the two big powers' vast and sometimes tense economic, diplomatic and security ties.

Obama did not meet Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, when he was in Washington in early October. But the Dalai Lama has said they may meet after Obama's visit to China, which condemns the Buddhist monk as a separatist for demanding Tibetan self-determination.

China is sure to condemn such a meeting, and spokesman Qin underscored -- and possibly intensified -- the political temperature of the issue by citing Obama's background and admiration for President Abraham Lincoln, who opposed the secession of the southern states and sought to abolish slavery, which Qin likened to Tibetan society under the Dalai Lama.

After Obama's inauguration, the US President said he would not have been able to reach that position without the efforts of Lincoln, said Qin.

"He is a black president, and he understands the slavery abolition movement and Lincoln's major significance for that movement," said Qin.

"Lincoln played an incomparable role in protecting the national unity and territorial integrity of the United States."

Beijing calls the Dalai Lama a dangerous "splittist" encouraging Tibetan independence, a charge he denies. He says he is merely seeking true autonomy for Tibet, which last year erupted in riots and protests against the Chinese presence.

"China's stance was like Lincoln's," said Qin.

"Thus on this issue we hope that President Obama, more than any other foreign leader, can better, more deeply grasp China's stance on protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Qin.

Asked about any broader consequences of a possible meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama, Qin said Beijing opposes any such meetings between the exiled Tibetan leader and foreign leaders, and said the issue was among China's core concerns.

"We must treasure the positive circumstances and opportunities for China-US relations," Qin said.

"In particular, both sides must respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and Tibetan issues are among China's core interests and major concerns."

Douchebaggery, now Made in China. This is one of the things China bought American debt for. To be able to 'peacefully' dictate what the most powerful man on Earth should do, who he should meet, or not.

Unrelated to Tawang visit, so don't merge with those threads.

My anus. Lincoln didn't oppress his own countrymen, he didn't order slaughter of the secessionists after the civil-war, nor did he oppress the blacks (a minority). China oppressing Uighurs and Tibetans is beyond fact.

China has no lama phobia....

in fact, it is China that is using lama as a excuse to show the world how a banker teachs the bankrupter a lesson....

or that is, "kill a monkey to frighten hens".

If the "sole superpower" as a monkey has to be subject of the requirement from China, then how can the other weak countries as "hens" do under the pressure of China?

Yup, that sums it up. If Obama indeed changes his plans, he ends up risking American dominance. Besides, 700 billion dollars really is chickenshit for America. Don't fly too high with your 'generous' loan. So it's not going to teach America a 'lesson', as such. At least not with something of this stature. America risks losing foothold and popularity in India if he calls off his Dalai meet, which pretty much every American regime has been in very good terms with.

China owns a lot more than $700 billion, and their dollar reserves have been described by the West as their trump card. So the debt they own is pretty significant, comprising 25% of US treasury securities.

USA has the upperhand as far as China owning US debt goes, the treasuries China owes are getting .01% interest rate lowest in history, China owes debt that there is no market for not even US institutions want it so US govt maybe the buyer of last resort if China does decide to dump their debt as they threaten USA can buy it 10 cent on the dollar since no one else is buying USA will determine the price, if or when there is a war between USA or China or any reason, USA can just decide not to honor the debt it will automatically be worthless, USA has trapped China with US debt holding and any attempt by China to blackmail USA will only sink China. This is just one example of how much power the Dalai Lama has over China a facist military totaliarian regime brought to their knees by a Man of God and peace.

Owns, maybe. Not be owed. In fact recent reports suggesting China was 'worried' about a [relatively] mere $700B in the hands of US, shows how cheapskate it really is, when linking leant money to foreign policy. If China 'Shylocks' America on a mere 700B, it will risk losing future purchase of debt which could be even more profitable.

Getheler visited china several month ago and had to face the laugh from CHinese students when he lectured that "CHinese asset in USA will be safe". I am afraid that Obama will have to endure such a disgrace too......

Doesn't that statement just strike you as odd? Obama should be sympathetic to Chinese opposition for a country that enslaves another, when he is black and lauds the abolition of slavery? :sarcastic:

Is obama coming to China for financing his stimulus plans??. What a joke!!.

Many chinese take it for granted that they are doing a favor by buying US treasuries. Hello, a wake-up call to all chinese, China is doing so to save its own ass. You people should come out of any delusions that you are funding the US by holding their debt. They can any time can print money out of this debt in no time. The sore loser will be China with its $2 trillion reserves and US treasury bonds and the paper it will be holding will not be even the worth of tissue paper that you use in your toilet. Keep dreaming.

My foot / My a$$ / in this case my anus (to put it politely). Ask your English teacher what that expression means. It means "Bullshit!" or strong disapproval of something.

It's called tokenism. Besides, after the recent Uighur riots, the Chinese government repealed all those special privileges (related to education).
