In 2007, China shot down a 4.6-foot cube satellite at an intercept altitude of 864km. The intercept speed was 32,400 km/hr.

In 2008, the United States prepositioned its ships right underneath the flight path of a decaying satellite re-entry. The satellite was the size of a bus and the intercept altitude was 247km. The intercept speed was 28,000 km/hr.

Who do you think has superior anti-satellite technology?

China's target was almost 10 times smaller than the US target (e.g. 4.6 feet vs. 30 feet). China's interceptor struck at an altitude 3 1/2 times higher than the US intercept (e.g. 864km vs. 247km). China's interceptor was traveling 4,400 km/hr faster than the US interceptor (e.g. 32,400 km/hr vs. 28,000 km/hr).

An objective comparison shows China's ASAT interceptor exceeds the US SM-3 in all three categories.

Use of ASAT is contrbuting to space garbage thus posing a problem for all mankind. China should restrain itself from such irresponsible actions. Furthermore, space should be used for peaceful purposes only.

Your comment is ridiculous.

War kills people. That's a bigger problem for mankind.

You think a few pieces of floating space junk is irresponsible?

Why aren't you complaining about the US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, drone war in Pakistan, etc. that is killing people?

When did floating space debris become more important than human lives?

I will definitely complain about the atrocities including those on tibet and students in Tienanmen square. At the moment however, I am just having too much fun calling out your BS and highlighting the true evils of the murderous, anti-freedom and anti-peace govt of China.

You're in the wrong thread and sub-forum.

Go to DFI's "World Affairs" to discuss politics.

This is a Chinese military sub-forum with occasional discussion of civilian technology.

The era of missiles as ASAT is old tech. It creates a lot of debris and is too provocative.

New gen ASATs:

1. Ground-based nonkinetic (jamming)

2. Space-based ASAT

The latter ASAT systems are already operational but a lot of these are black projects. These are also controversial weapons since it's blatant militarization of space. Russis, China and some EU countries have these capabilities.
