China has agreed to buy a large number of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia, Interfax reported on Friday, citing the director of the Russian plant that makes the weapons.

The truck-mounted S-300, known in the West as the SA-20, can shoot down cruise missiles and aircraft.

Interfax quoted Igor Ashurbeili, director general of Almaz Antei, as saying China would receive a total of 15 batteries of S-300s. He did not give the value of the deal.

In Russia's armed forces, a S-300 battery normally consists of four truck-mounted installations, each consisting of four missiles held in metal tubes.

Moscow has said it plans to fulfil a contract to supply the S-300, nicknamed "the favorite" in Russia, to Iran, unnerving Israel and its close ally the United States.

The possible sale to Tehran of the S-300, which could protect Iran's nuclear facilities against air strikes, has become a sensitive issue in Russia's relations with Israel.

I think the article is a misprint of what is reported...

Russia delivers S-300 air-defence batteries to China
2010-04-02 17:50:00

/RIA Novosti) Russia has delivered 15 batteries of S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to China, the manufacturer said Friday.

Igor Ashurbeili, general director of the Almaz-Antei, said it had thus completed the contract with China but gave no indication of how much it was worth or specifically how many S-300s had been delivered.

An S-300 battery is typically comprised of four truck-mounted installations, each consisting of four missiles.

A 'huge line' of foreign clients is waiting to buy S-300s and a more advanced version, the S-400, but that no new contracts would be signed for the time being, he said.

'First, we have to arm the Russian military. If there are available production capacities and we fulfill our current contracts, then this process (the signing of new contracts) will resume.'

The advanced version of the S-300 missile system, called S-300PMU1 (SA-20 Gargoyle), has a range of over 150 km and can intercept ballistic missiles and aircraft at low and high altitudes, making the system an effective tool for warding off possible airstrikes.

It can simultaneously track up to 100 targets and engage up to 12.

I thought the Chinese were interested in S-400?? If the mid course interception test was everything they claimed why even buy the S-300's?? Looks like a Russians are not giving the latest technology for fear of it being reversed engineered(hq-9).

it is not a new contract.
the contract was signed during 2004-2005. now it is just the hand-over of old orders. .

Since 2005, PLA has not give more weapon orders to Russia.

Besides, " China would receive a total of 15 batteries of S-300s" is wrong, because CHina has recieved the 15 battries of S300s.

Russia's S400 is still being tested and not mature.

S400 is just Russia's market parpaganda. the tech integeration of S400 is not mature.

of course, CHina may be interested of some tech applied to S400,but CHina will never import the whole system of S400.

Russians have inducted the S-400 so it is mature. Why buy S-300 if their are elements of S-400 China wants?? (because Russia dosen't want to sell it) Why buy s-300 if hq-9 has been developed to the point where it is ready for export to Pakistan?? Contracts and deals can always be cancelled. Why buy any Russian system when China has claimed to be succesful in midcourse interception?? these systems don't have that capability.

the order was signed during 2004-2005 . furthermore, CHina think the ordered S300 is "quite cheap" ,even compared with indigneious HQ9.

Chinese officers think it is quite advanced considering they purchased it despite having HQ-9. China ordered this batch of missiles during 2006-2007, after the advent of HQ-9. Chinese SAMs are far inferior to Russian design since they can't do anything other than attempt to copy the older systems they recieve.

as I know, the batch was order in 2004-2005,when HQ9 still can be mass-produced and its production could not meet the urgent demand of PLA.

but now, CHina even trys to export HQ9 to Turkey ,which fully prove the production of HQ9 is enogh and HQ9 is not most advanced anti-defence projects any more.

maybe we should say it is 15 S300pmu2 barrerries, and 4 S300pmu plus 8 S300pum1 batteries might not be included. we used to say the total number of S300 systems is 20(4 pmu ,8 pmu1,8 pmu2). so more information needed.
