China threatens to ban import of seafood from India

Updated on Monday, July 27, 2009, 16:05 IST

New Delhi: Beijing has threatened to ban import of seafood and other food products from India if New Delhi continues to restrict import of milk products from China, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Chinese chocolates banned in India: Anand Sharma"The Chinese side ... said that if India insists on this decision (to ban import of milk and milk products, including chocolate and chocolate products), China will respond to the safety and quality issues for imported products from India," the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jyotiraditya Scindia, said in a written reply.

In a response to the extension of ban on milk and milk products, including chocolate exported by China to India till December 24, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China had conveyed that it had encountered food safety problems in imported food products from India, including seafood products.

China, however, has not imposed a ban on import of the food products, Scindia said.

The government has conveyed to the neighboring country that India has taken note of their concerns. China has been also told that the decision to extend the ban till December 24 was taken after due consultation with authorities concerned and experts in the dairy industry.

"Government of India is in touch with the Chinese Government through our Embassy in Beijing to discuss such trade related issues," Scindia said.

Why do we need to import milk from them . I believe we are self sufficient and importing milk will also harm our domestic producers. Regarding chocolates, I don't mind them competing.
Satish, is right . We can export fish products to other countries. I wouldn't lose sleep over that.

The Chinese stand is one of desperation in these times of economic turmoil. It will be funny and bad for China's "prestige" if China is the only country on the planet to ban Indian food products on flimsy grounds when half the world has already termed Chinese milk as unsafe.

It's a little like the boy who takes his ball home if he's not allowed to play. Tit-for-tat tactics.

India must be awash with milk, so this ban on imported fish food by China is an over reaction and rather childish. The problem with these inimical tactics is that they can get out of hand in a humongous way. More restrictions are put in place and it can very quickly get out of hand. At the end of the day nobody in power wins, but the poor man suffers. All Ministers involved must get together and resolve the situation...perhaps over a glass of milk:wink:

Let's be clear.

One cannot impose any restriction on food to China.

They will never starve. They eat exotic food - dogs, tigers gonads, snails, caterpillars, bugs and anything that moves and maybe a Giant Panda's posterior.

Let them not take our seafood. So what? Sell it elsewhere.

As per international reports, China is overheating!!

India was late in banning Chinese milk products many western countries were well ahead of India, this retaliatory move can escalate against China who have a trade surplus with India.

that should be the case most certainly. if we can sustain with the ban i am sure this will force the MNCs which procure their products from the prc to look at setting up manufacturing units in india to augment the shortfall created as also to give a push to their dwindling sales figures as a result of this ban which eventually effects the bottom line. what one would love to see is that if projects of such nature are coming for clearance then they be cleared at lightening speed, because if we are not doing that, then we are missing this very important opportunity yet again and at the end of the day we will still have to depend on the prc to fill up the demand and supply gap.

of interest will certainly be how much of sea food do we export to the prc, how many people, their lively hoods would directly and indirectly get effected, and how hard would all this lead to a shortfall in the earnings of our fishermen and exchequer.

the bigger issue that certainly looms is, this could be a pretext by both the countries for future trade wars and if that is to be the case then that certainly does not argue well for both the countries but with balance of trade in favor of the prc, i'm sure we would not mind it that much.

a trade war usually harm both sides.

problem is that "which side will be harmed more?"

Obvioulsy, the smaller the trade scale is , the more the economy is harmed.

If the milk products ban is based on genuien concerns (a it would seem) then the ban is justified. If china wants to ban our seafood based on genuine health grounds, thats fine too. Important to keep talking and not get into a useless trade war.

Surely China and India both want to be seen to be responsible exporters and can behave responsibly to handle the issue.

dumping cheap and low quality products harms the importer everytime. either the consumer will suffer or producer will, something which India is avoiding. we all know quality of chinese products (built by chinese companies non branded ones) being dumped in India. take the mobile phones for examples, it helps terrorists, underworld dons more than consumers.Power equipment also gives problems with India power producers.
