Less than two kilometres away from the last village on India’s western border, Pakistan is building what is ostensibly a railway station with China’s help.

Located on an established trade route between India and Pakistan, it appears to be an innocuous structure. But given the region’s geo-political equations, experts are viewing it as an aggressive attempt by our northern neighbour to establish a foothold close to India’s western border — its first.

“It’s part of the larger Chinese plan for strategic domination,” said Dr Srikanth Kondapalli, a professor in Chinese studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Border officials fear the building will double up as a surveillance facility for both the Chinese and the Pakistanis. If war ever breaks out, it will also help Pakistan move troops to the border more swiftly.

“First, the nexus between China and Pakistan consisted of military spare-parts supplies, then came partnerships for military supplies,” said Brig (retd) Gurmeet Kanwal, director of Centre for Land Warfare Studies in New Delhi. “Then, we learnt China clandestinely supplied 50 kg uranium to Pakistan. Now there is an infrastructure nexus.”

With China’s help, about two months ago, Pakistan began building this structure about 1.5 km away from the Indian border, said BSF officers manning the border in Rajasthan.

Among the sources of information are passengers on the Thar Express, a weekly train that makes the six-km journey from Munabao in Rajasthan, 250-kilometres west of Jodhpur, to Khokrapur in Pakistan.

“There is some construction activity along the railway line,” said Kalpesh Kumar, from Mirpur Khaas in Pakistan who came off the train last Saturday.

This is not China’s first attempt to establish a presence on India’s western front, said border officials. In June, it tried to convert a ramshackle structure into a proper building in Pakistani territory located in no-man’s land, i.e. within 150 metres of India’s border. Work stopped only after India opposed —the structure violated an agreement that forbids either India or Pakistan from building anything 150 metres within the international border.

To be fair to Pakistan, I don't think that China helping them to build a railway station is anti India.

Pakistan is a bankrupt country and lives off money given by the US, Saudi and construction work by cheap Chinese labour and equipment.

Pakistan also has to live, even if it means bailouts, hand outs and sheer pan-handling!

I agree with what you say only in principle. Even without the presence of a rail link all sort of illegal transfers have been taking place between these two nations and with this rail link, their nefarious activities will only receive a fillip.

If it were two other nations, I certainly wouldn't mind, but not these two who have been historically colluding against India.

Tomorrow in an Indo-Pak war, Pak can whistle in 10,000s of Chinese troops overnight by rail. Besides it's on disputed territory, we can and must protest.

The whole fukup with India is it has razor-sharp teeth, but weak jaws (political will).

If we can't build a water project in Arunachal Pradesh they damn bloody well can't build a rail project in Disputed Kashmir.

How can China do anything about this railway line against India.

It is in Rajasthan.

To move 10,000 troops it cannot be done in a jiffy.

How long did it take India to mobilise for Op Parakrama?

Their railway location is pretty close to the border of Rajasthan and It won't be very difficult for India to destroy the railway and disable chinese's supply of troops.

This rail is more of a liability then an asset ,an easy target along with karokaram highway, by the way to involve yoursef directly in a war between two nations surely breaks international UN codes and could setup to be a larger world war,Chinese didn't have the guts to do it in 4 previous wars and if they do it now it would worst timing in their part.

The problem sir, is I think that, the line passes through occupied Kashmir, thereby eroding our claim to legitimacy in the region, uniquely strengthening theirs, and preventing an ultimate border settlement in our favour.

From a purely military standpoint, this remains more a liability than an asset, for in the event of a war, the SFF could easily sneak in and blow up a section of the tracks, given its: a) length of traversal b) proximity to Rajasthaan and c) terrain of emplacement.

The issue, in tacticul and tangible terms, is the 'permanantizing' of the shanty rail structure on the Munabao-Khokhrapar rail link that is in no-mans-land along the border in Barmer. But there seems to be some cognizance as to the issue, and as happened the last time, the government's got off its lazy, fat a$$:

China-Pak railway station makes India see red

Published on Tue, Jun 02, 2009 at 22:02, Updated on Tue, Jun 02, 2009 at 22:14 in India section

Jaipur: In what could be a latest and one of the biggest threat to India, Pakistan has hired a Chinese company to build an illegal railway station on no man's land near the Indian border at Barmer.

The railway station being built by a Chinese company is not only illegal but is just one of the many moves Beijing is making to unsettle New Delhi.

The railway station of the Munabao-Khokhrapar rail link on which the Thar Express crosses the India-Pak border is one of the signs of friendship between the two countries.

But the makeshift railway station on Pakistani side could become a permanent security threat to India.

When the railway station was built in 2006 to coincide with the reopening of the Munabao-Khokhrapar line, it was against international laws, since it was built 150 meters inside the demarcated no man's land.

Now Pakistan is all set to make the structure permanent and in a double whammy for India, Islamabad has invited a Chinese company to construct the station and that too on the zero line.

Two weeks ago engineers from the Chinese company carried out a survey of the area.

Since the point is higher than the surrounding area, it will enable Pakistan to keep a direct watch on the Indian side and allow it to transport forces and ammunition right up to the zero line in the event of a conflict.

After Mumbai terror attack changed the equation between India and Pakistan, New Delhi is taking the matter very seriously, unlike three years ago.

"The seriousness of the matter I'm sure is being felt at a higher level but on our part we will send a report of the situation on the ground to the concerned ministry, " says Barmer District Magistrate Ravi Jain.

"We'll first take up the matter in the flag meeting. If that doesn't work then we'll stop them, if need be there'll be deployment and we'll take up the matter in a higher level meeting," adds BSF, DIG, Barmer HK Gujjar.

The Indian government says it is already keeping a close watch on the Chinese involvement in various projects of the neighbouring countries.

"There is no shortfall in preparedness from our side in this regard. Chinese influence is not just in Pakistan, but they are trying to develop a port in Sri Lanka and in Myanmar as well. And we are well aware of all these developments. And we are taking steps that this Chinese influence does not pose a threat to our nations," says Minister of State, Defence MM Pallam Raju.

With Indian government remaining silent so far on the illegal makeshift railway station almost on the zero line Pakistan has maintained that it was only meant for carrying out security checks.

But Pakistan's plans of building a permanent railway station there have raised fresh security concerns.

China building a railway station in Pakistan opposite Barmer does increase the threat that already exists.

China already claims Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. India could counter any Chinese military adventurism there by striking at its sea lines of communications in the Indian Ocean especially Chinese energy supplies/

In a bid to counter India, China is also building ports at Sittwe in Myanmar, Hambantota in Sri Lanka and Gwadar in Pakistan.

There is heavy Chinese courtship of Maldives, Seychelles, Mozambique and South Africa.

Maritime experts describe this as China's String of Pearls Strategy. If the strategy is successful then the Indian Navy will be forced to change its concept of operations.

China-Pak railway station makes India see red

There is no guarantee that this will even come to fruition. Given the plethora of, how should I put it lightly, 'Judas priests' that manage to run Pakisthan.

The article in the first post says that they managed to knock some sense into thick packie, daal-fed skulls.

Pakistani's are certainly cashing in on Tibeten Rail Link built by china, since they didn't had sufficient bucks to do it on their own.

If any hostile action is carried out by either the [mod] don't use these words [/mod] using this railway line, we can always blow it out by an air raid ...nevertheless, i think as Ray sir put it, they are building it since it seems pakis can't even build railway station on their own and as always are ever dependent on their chinese pals !

all the time , CPC is trying some new tricks to get the balance in their favour.

if it isnt a railway on disputed territory its something else

what india needs is political will to get the missile development and H bomb and ( other nukes ) development going at top speed

neither of these depend on china nor pak, only ourselves.

if we cant do these two , no point blaming CPC or pak neither any reason to be overawed with their new railway, potential ability to dam river sources in tibet, etc

just become overawed at our inability , the goi's inablity to do a few simple things which require poitical will and little else because india already has the technical ability

I am not surprised that indian friends are alarmed by this railway.

But can we look at it from economic perspective? Can china and pak benefit from this railway during peaceful period?

I have to say - What better way for Pak Jihadis to get to China's Xinjiang region and join their brothers there, than thru a railway built by the CCP.

Now our wonderful Chinese friends can get a first hand experience of Pakistan's most famous export to the world, and its claim to global pride and fame - the Pak Jihadi !!

Non-smoking, Badguy, and all the other Chinese friends on DFI - we the Indian members of DFI would like to recommend to our Chinese friends to extend the Rail link directly into Karachi, Waziristan and FATA and POK, so that you can speed up the brotherly relations between your 2 countries by increasing the "tourism" between Pak and China.

As you know - being the land of the peaceful Mahatma Gandhi, we the Indian people would love to see the people-to-people brotherly love develop between your 2 great countries.

Hell man, while you guys are at it - Why not make it a high-speed Rail link that you Chinese are so proud of ??

Maybe, you can introduce your Pak brothers to some wonderful new Chinese cuisine -
Char Siu Pork - Hmmm.... so tasty....I like !!!

You have no idea how happy we Indians will be when there is a direct high-speed 400 kmh rail link from Karachi to Urumqi.

LOL, that's the way you relief yourself?

Railway won't create Terrorist, but poverty!

If railway does, don't forget British left India at 1947 with best railway system in developing nations...

Is this the result (India among world's most terror afflicted nations: US) ?

By your logic,
if we connect with Bengal by railway, Bengal will export illegal immigrate to China;

if we connect with Katmandu, Nepal will export Maoist to China;

....

What a logic.
