Lawfare › Mandiant Report on “APT1″
Since 2004, Mandiant has investigated computer security breaches at hundreds of organizations around the world. The majority of these security breaches are attributed to advanced threat actors referred to as the "Advanced Persistent Threat" (APT). We first published details about the APT in our January 2010 M-Trends report. As we stated in the report, our position was that "The Chinese government may authorize this activity, but there's no way to determine the extent of its involvement." Now, three years later, we have the evidence required to change our assessment. The details we have analyzed during hundreds of investigations convince us that the groups conducting these activities are based primarily in China and that the Chinese Government is aware of them.

Mandiant continues to track dozens of APT groups around the world; however, this report is focused on the most prolific of these groups. We refer to this group as "APT1" and it is one of more than 20 APT groups with origins in China. APT1 is a single organization of operators that has conducted a cyber espionage campaign against a broad range of victims since at least 2006. From our observations, it is one of the most prolific cyber espionage groups in terms of the sheer quantity of information stolen. The scale and impact of APT1's operations compelled us to write this report.

The activity we have directly observed likely represents only a small fraction of the cyber espionage that APT1 has conducted. Though our visibility of APT1's activities is incomplete, we have analyzed the group's intrusions against nearly 150 victims over seven years. From our unique vantage point responding to victims, we tracked APT1 back to four large networks in Shanghai, two of which are allocated directly to the Pudong New Area. We uncovered a substantial amount of APT1's attack infrastructure, command and control, and modus operandi (tools, tactics, and procedures). In an effort to underscore there are actual individuals behind the keyboard, Mandiant is revealing three personas we have attributed to APT1. These operators, like soldiers, may merely be following orders given to them by others.

Our analysis has led us to conclude that APT1 is likely government-sponsored and one of the most persistent of China's cyber threat actors. We believe that APT1 is able to wage such a long-running and extensive cyber espionage campaign in large part because it receives direct government support. In seeking to identify the organization behind this activity, our research found that People's Liberation Army (PLA's) Unit 61398 is similar to APT1 in its mission, capabilities, and resources. PLA Unit 61398 is also located in precisely the same area from which APT1 activity appears to originate.

That is the most funny thing I ever heard: someone just believe a country with 1.2 billions people can be changed by one person and in short time?
It seems industrilization is just too easy to our india friend.

They should talk about land redistribution first before they are able to start their industrialization. Most India's rural population are peasants without a single piece of land, they barely hang their live on their yield, how can they afford to build up their industry.

Don't think Chinese need to lecture India on the subject.

Great Leap Forward - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Leap Forward (simplified Chinese: 大跃进; traditional Chinese: 大躍進; pinyin: Dà yuè jìn) of the People's Republic of China (PRC) was an economic and social campaign of the Communist Party of China (CPC), reflected in planning decisions from 1958 to 1961, which aimed to use China's vast population to rapidly transform the country from an agrarian economy into a modern communist society through the process of rapid industrialization and collectivization. Mao Zedong led the campaign based on the Theory of Productive Forces, and intensified it after being informed of the impending disaster from grain shortages.

Chief changes in the lives of rural Chinese included the introduction of a mandatory process of agricultural collectivization, which was introduced incrementally. Private farming was prohibited, and those engaged in it were labeled as counter revolutionaries and persecuted. Restrictions on rural people were enforced through public struggle sessions, and social pressure, although people also experienced forced labor.[1] Rural industrialization, officially a priority of the campaign, saw "its development "¦ aborted by the mistakes of the Great Leap Forward."[2]

The Great Leap ended in catastrophe, resulting in tens of millions of excess deaths.[3] Estimates of the death toll range from 18 million[4] to 45 million,[5] with estimates by demographic specialists ranging from 18 million to 32.5 million.[4] Historian Frank Dikötter asserts that "coercion, terror, and systematic violence were the very foundation of the Great Leap Forward" and it "motivated one of the most deadly mass killings of human history."[6]

The years of the Great Leap Forward in fact saw economic regression, with 1958 through 1961 being the only years between 1953 and 1983 in which China's economy saw negative growth. Political economist Dwight Perkins argues, "enormous amounts of investment produced only modest increases in production or none at all. "¦ In short, the Great Leap was a very expensive disaster."[7]

In subsequent conferences in 1960 and 1962, the negative effects of the Great Leap Forward were studied by the CPC, and Mao was criticized in the party conferences. Moderate Party members like Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping rose to power, and Mao was marginalized within the party, leading him to initiate the Cultural Revolution in 1966.

Mandia wants more federal money for his firm。

The US internet forces need more budget from from the Congress。

We all know what kind of a game the US is playing。Only the fools and the brainwashed go with the US story and black propaganda。

We also know for sure that the US is THE country from which the majority of cyber attacks originate。

The US propaganda machine is always quite and silent when it comes to matters that reflect badly on the US as a STATE。lol!

Very prudent of Chinese to scan the aircraft for these devices.

But what is the rest of the story? Can you provide details?

From your link:
1 the point here is not about if chinese found the devices but whether americans would do the same to scout others scrects.....i dont have direct evidence to show how amercians (gov) trying to cyber attack or harass prc albeit its a common sense and there are unoffical reports in chinese language but i at least know americans can go all the way to obtain prcs info via illegal means......such as sending UAV to mainland china....when some U2 etc downed by PLA were pilotted by taiwanese (and trained by americans of course) AQM-34 was sent directly by the US and downed by PLA......if you want to put a label of stealing info or breaching others sovirety on prc you'd better have a good look of yourself 1st......

2 as for your question.....well i cant provide more useful details with you because unlike you whos title is Defence Professionals.....the only thing i can access is google and baidu.....and if both american and chinese govs didnt want to admit the thing (both didnt deny as well) so there was no offical recognization then i'd better live with google and baidu to read those unoffical stories which you can find by your self with some key word typings.....and probably you got some special portals you can access as a gift from your job so you can know better than an average person like me......mind sharing some info???

better know one thing.....more people growing old means at least one of the next two things: 1 there are enough people giving birth to sustain the growth...2 society getting rich and people can access better medicine so kids wont die young and elders can live longer.....

a developed nation can surely see point 2 therefore unless you dont want to or cant be developed you have to get old which is a direct result of a rich society.....
