China overtakes US to become top smart device market, India growing 8th fastest: Report

China overtakes US to become top smart device market, India growing 8th fastest: Report | NDTV Gadgets

China has overtaken US for the first time to become the largest market in the world in terms of active smart devices. This is according to Flurry analytics, which tracked around 2.4 billion application sessions per day across more than 275,000 applications around the world to arrive at this conclusion.

It's worth pointing out that Flurry's definition of smart devices includes mobiles and tablets running iOS and Android. Other operating systems like Windows Phone and BlackBerry are not included as part of this data. Flurry estimates that it reliably measures activity across more than 90% of the world's smart devices.

The milestone comes nearly a year after China overtook US in terms of monthly iOS and Android activations.

With both US and China near equal in January 2013 Flurry data at 222 million and 221 million devices respectively, Flurry projects that since China is growing at a much faster rate than US, it will become the top country in terms of active smart devices by end of this month. As per its projections, China will have 246 million devices compared to 230 million in the United States.

Flurry further states that China is unlikely to give up this lead in a hurry, and will stay the top country for years to come, thanks to its large population base.

"We also conclude that the U.S. will not take back the lead from China, given the vast difference in population per country. China has over 1.3 billion people while the U.S. has just over 310 million. Considering that the U.S. has the world's 3rd largest population, the only other country that could feasibly overtake China sometime in the future is India, with a population of just over 1.2 billion. However, with only 19 million active smart devices in India, China will not likely see competition from India for many years. Below, we show the top 12 countries by active iOS and Android installed base through the end of January 2013."

Flurry also shared data about fastest growing markets in terms of smart device installed base over the last year. As expected, the list is dominated by developing countries, with Cambodia taking the top spot with 278% growth. China came in sixth with 209% growth, while India came in at 8th spot with an increase in total number Android + iOS devices of 189%.

Chinese cyber-attacks: Hello, Unit 61398 | The Economist

AN AMERICAN information-security firm has identified a secretive Chinese military unit as the likely source of hacking attacks against more than a hundred companies around the world. In a report made public on Tuesday, the firm, Mandiant, based in Alexandria, Virginia, said it could now back up suspicions it first reported in more qualified form in 2010.

The firm had said then the Chinese government may have authorised the hacking activity it had traced to China, but that there was "no way to determine the extent" of official involvement. In its new report, Mandiant upgrades its assessment. "The details we have analysed during hundreds of investigations convince us that the groups conducting these activities are based primarily in China and that the Chinese government is aware of them," the report said.

China's government has denied the allegations. Hong Lei, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry, said on February 19th that China has itself been a victim of cyber-attacks, and that it enforces laws that ban such activity. "Groundless criticism is irresponsible and unprofessional, and it will not help to solve the problem," he said of the Mandiant report.

According to the report, a Shanghai-based unit of the People's Liberation Army General Staff Department, known as Unit 61398, is staffed by hundreds and possibly thousands of people specially trained in network security, digital signal processing, covert communications and English linguistics. The unit's 12-storey building (pictured above) has been equipped with special fibre-optic communications infrastructure "in the name of national defence".

Very prudent of Chinese to scan the aircraft for these devices.

But what is the rest of the story? Can you provide details?

From your link:

Members of a team of Chinese officials who supervised the construction of the aircraft have since been detained. A total of 22 people are being held in connection with the case and one senior air force official is believed to be under house arrest.

From your link:
The following story is quite disappointing according to internet bloggers, for example, those bugs are studies and found out they can also trace Chinese military cell phone signals, so no more cell phones for PLA in sensitive areas. Pacific fleet has been sending out tons of EP3 to eavesdrop these signals and US navy intelligence is quite unhappy.

This is How China Hacks America: Inside the Mandiant Report - The Daily Beast

The Chinese government just got caught with a smoking cyber gun.

Cybersecurity consultant Mandiant released a much-anticipated report Tuesday morning, offering the most detailed look to date inside the Chinese People Liberation Army's direct involvement in hacking into American government and corporate websites.

The PLA Unit 61398 is identified by the report as the most prolific hacking group inside the Chinese government. Dedicated to infiltrating English-language sites, the unit recruits English-language proficient speakers and experts in computer security, but otherwise scrubs any mention of its organization from Chinese-language websites. Operating out of a 12-story, 130,663 square foot facility in the Pudong New Area sector of Shanghai, its building is able to contain as many as 2,000 personnel. Special high capacity fiber-optics were installed by China Telecom when the building was constructed in 2007 and the outfit utilizes over 1,000 servers.

In this three-year investigation, Mandiant documented Unit 61398 hacking into 141 companies (including 115 in the U.S.) across 20 industries, and stealing many terabytes of compressed data in sustained attacks averaging 356 days. The longest persistent attack documented by Mandiant lasted 4 years and 10 months. The largest recorded theft was 6.5 terabytes from a single company over 10 months.

Mandiant Intelligence Center Report | Mandiant®

Highlights

Our analysis has led us to conclude that APT1 is likely government-sponsored and one of the most persistent of China's cyber threat actors. The scale and impact of APT1's operations compelled us to write this report. In an attempt to bolster defenses against APT1 operations Mandiant is also releasing more than 3,000 indicators as part of the appendix to this report, which can be used with our free tools and our commercial products to search for signs of APT attack activity.

Highlights of the report include:

APT1 is believed to be the 2nd Bureau of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Staff Department's (GSD) 3rd Department, which is most commonly known by its Military Unit Cover Designator (MUCD) as Unit 61398.
APT1 has systematically stolen hundreds of terabytes of data from at least 141 organizations.
APT1 focuses on compromising organizations across a broad range of industries in English-speaking countries.
APT1 maintains an extensive infrastructure of computer systems around the world.
In over 97% of the 1,905 times Mandiant observed APT1 intruders connecting to their attack infrastructure, APT1 used IP addresses registered in Shanghai and systems set to use the Simplified Chinese language.
The size of APT1's infrastructure implies a large organization with at least dozens, but potentially hundreds of human operators.
In an effort to underscore that there are actual individuals behind the keyboard, Mandiant is revealing three personas that are associated with APT1 activity.
Mandiant is releasing more than 3,000 indicators to bolster defenses against APT1 operations.

In your post you alluded to a "following story", but there was none, so I asked.

I do not understand Chinese. Does that affect any relevant facts in the story?

Is Mandiant a 'digital Blackwater'? - Yahoo! News
When Kevin Mandia, a retired military cybercrime investigator, decided to expose China as a primary threat to U.S. computer networks, he didn't have to consult with American diplomats in Beijing or declassify tactics to safely reveal government secrets.

He pulled together a 76-page report based on seven years of his company's work and produced the most detailed public account yet of how, he says, the Chinese government has been rummaging through the networks of major U.S. companies.

It wasn't news to Mandia's commercial competitors, or the federal government, that systematic attacks could be traced back to a nondescript office building outside Shanghai that he believes was run by the Chinese army. What was remarkable was that the extraordinary details — code names of hackers, one's affection for Harry Potter and how they stole sensitive trade secrets and passwords — came from a private security company without the official backing of the U.S. military or intelligence agencies that are responsible for protecting the nation from a cyberattack.

The report, embraced by stakeholders in both government and industry, represented a notable alignment of interests in Washington: The Obama administration has pressed for new evidence of Chinese hacking that it can leverage in diplomatic talks — without revealing secrets about its own hacking investigations — and Mandiant makes headlines with its sensational revelations.

The report also shows the balance of power in America's cyberwar has shifted into the hands of the $30 billion-a-year computer security industry.

"We probably kicked the hornet's nest,"
Mandia, 42, said in an interview at the Alexandria, Va., headquarters of Mandiant. But "tolerance is just dwindling. People are tired of the status quo of being hacked with impunity, where there's no risk or repercussion."

China has disputed Mandiant's allegations.
Some of the hornets are swarming on DFI.
