China has maintained a diplomatic poker face on Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's high-profile India visit. But that has only barely hidden Beijing's bitterness against New Delhi's decision to invite Abe to the chief guest at 65th Republic Day parade at the Capital's grand boulevard, Rajpath, on Sunday.

It is India's decision to reserve the best seat for Abe at the parade on January 26, but academics and strategic analysts told HT that New Delhi better deal with the situation in a sharply nuanced manner.

Abe's warm welcome to India does not entirely unbalance Sino-India ties – beset with the issues of border, water, trade and Pakistan anyway— but does cast a shadow on the tenuous bilateral bond, they said.

"It did not happen at the right time. We cannot ignore this," Lan Jianxue from the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR) told HT. With the Communist country's history of violence and occupation with Japan, there probably would never be a right time for India – in China's eyes – to invite home a Japanese leader.

But when Lan indicated that now wasn't the right time, there is added context to it.

Since the middle of 2012, Beijing and Tokyo have been locked in an aggressive diplomatic tussle over the uninhabited Diaoyu (Senkaku in Japanese) islands in the East China Sea. The islands are under Japanese control – it was owned privately before the Japanese government purchased three of them – but China has staked historical claims on it.

But the Sino-Japanese hostility goes back in history to protracted wars and the Japanese occupation of large swathes of China between 1937 and 1945.

China accuses Japan of committing large-scale war crimes on civilians including the slaughtering of hundreds of thousands in the city of Nanjing in eastern China.

And when Abe recently visited the Yasukuni war memorial in Tokyo that houses the remains of the war dead, including that of Japanese generals said to be responsible for massacres in China, Beijing launched its latest salvo of rhetoric.

"Most Chinese may think India's invitation for Abe to attend the Republic Day as the chief guest an offence in terms of the current problems between Beijing and Tokyo, especially Abe's recent pilgrimage to the Yasukuni Shrine. Almost surely, New Delhi's initiative will produce political implications for China's relations with India. And it seems hard to rule out the likelihood of some negative developments in the near-future bilateral relationship," said Zhang Li, Institute of South Asia Studies, Sichuan University.

One of China's leading experts on South Asia, CICIR's Hu Shisheng said Abe's visit might not have a "tangible negative result".

But concerns, HU said remain about military cooperation, joint research, security dialogue and joint military exercises between India and Japan.

Nuclear entente | The Asian Age
The recent revelation that China is negotiating to build three new nuclear plants worth $13 billion in Muzaffargarh district of Pakistan's Punjab province reinforces the longstanding reality of the former purposefully undermining India's national security.

Even though China's mega nuclear deals with Pakistan are dressed up as responses to acute electricity shortage crippling the latter, the dualistic civil-cum-military nature of nuclear technology and the history of Sino-Pakistani collusion in nuclear weapons and missiles leave little to the imagination about their true strategic intent.

Seriously? Do you think, are they going to stop that?

In the name of so called deeper than ocean, sweeter than honey, sexier than Aphrodite friendship with Pukes, chinis are simply trying to irk us and it would continue till we settle (???) Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh border dispute.

The two are not equivalent. China didn't offer the reactors to Pakistan until after India got the Indo-US nuclear pact, which allows India access to Westinghouse reactors.

On the other hand, China has never extended an invitation to a Pakistani PM to visit Beijing during 10/1 military parades in the same way India just did to Abe; nor has China invited the Pakistani defense minister and issued explicit proclamations of 'mutual security interests' for a 'multipolar Asia' in the same way that India and Japan have.

Back to China's strategic goals: China wants peace on its southern frontier. There are two different ways for China to achieve it.

The first is a Sino-Indian entente cordiale. The second is nuclear parity on the subcontinent between Pakistan and India. The more India leans away from China, the more China will work for the second option. Ergo, when India thinks it has sent a message to China by inviting Abe for 1/26, it has - it just got itself another 50 Pakistani warheads aimed at its major cities, with better guidance and evasion systems.

China can keep doing this all day, since it has more advanced nuclear technology than India, Pakistan has a Saudi checkbook, and India cannot attack Pakistan's nuclear arsenal without inviting instant MAD. And China will never let Pakistan's nuclear edge fall so far behind India's that India can conceive of a victorious nuclear conflict. For India to try and 'counter' China is a losing competition, since China can continually use Pakistan to check India from a position of advantage.

Ergo, the only way for India to move forward is to swallow its pride and move Sino-Indian relations forward without toxic jingoism getting in the way. Thankfully, it seems India has found someone who can do that in Kejriwal. Here's hoping he gets elected.

China might not have officially invited Paki ministers :blah: :blah: :blah: Unofficially, Chinese are doing their best to support Pakis to counter India, don't you agree?

All the best

After decades of watching china linkup with Pakistan we have now managed to get an equaliser - Japan the Great .
In due course it would be great to add South Korea and later Vietnam and possibly Thailand too.
That will get Prc-China to really sit up, even if we cant get Myanmar also.
Cong hasnt done too badly at all in getting Japan over on our side, a pity NDA didnt manage to get this far.

A coalition government with Cong and BJP as partners would be my ideal - a pity we dont have a template at this time, for that to be able to happen

How is Japan an equalizer?

not likely
and later Vietnam
not likely, unless the Vietnamese Communist Party is overthrown
and possibly Thailand too.
Not likely - when have you heard of Thailand complaining about China?

No, that will get China to 'solve' India via inciting India to invade Pakistan.

Cong hasnt done too badly at all in getting Japan over on our side, a pity NDA didnt manage to get this far.
Actually, Abe has been the one doing most of the heavy lifting here. He's been running around Asia trying to get allies for his anti-China coalition since his inauguration. So far, only the Philippines and India have signed on. Not even Vietnam has done so.

A coalition government with those two parties would only work if they had a strong AAP to rally their members against.

Actually, China isn't trying to negotiate with India for something as meaningless as a pile of high-altitude rocks. China wants India's security guarantee on its shipping through the IOR. It always has, always will, and unless India can give it, China will keep the subcontinent in a state of nuclear parity since that at least keeps India from fully focusing on the ocean.

Why would the US do it? India is not Japan, Taiwan or South Korea.

You think we won't nuke back if the Pakis nuke us?

India would nuke Pakistan, sure. Would India nuke China, a legally neutral party in the war? Would anyone dare publicly support India?

Ask any politician in India if they, as PM, would nuke a neutral China if India got hit by Pakistani warheads.

What are you saying man? are you alright? When did China change its stance on pile of high-altitude rocks and started concentrated on shipping via IOR?
