China Needles, India Responds | The Diplomat

The latest transport aircraft purchase by India is just a first step in a transformation of its military. It's China that has it worried.

This month, India's Cabinet Committee on Security approved the purchase of 10 C-17 Globemaster III heavy-lift transport aircraft from the United States for use by the Indian Air Force, in a deal worth $4.1 billion.

The contract, which has an offset obligation of about $1 billion, is the highest single value military contract that New Delhi has entered into with the United States, and will certainly go some way to assuaging any hurt feelings on the US side over its losing out in the race to secure a lucrative contract to supply 126 combat jets to the Indian Air Force.

But the diplomatic benefits aside, the C-17 planes will significantly enhance India's strategic lift capacity. With a payload capacity of more than 73,600 kilograms, the planes are capable of carrying 188 passengers, have reverse thrust engines for short turnaround, and are equipped with a missile warning system with flares to disengage any incoming missile attack. Until now, the Russian IL-76 'Gajraj' and AN-32 has been the Indian Air Force's mainstay for transporting men and material.

Combined with the purchase of half a dozen tactical lift C-130J Super Hercules aircraft from the Lockheed Martin stable earlier this year, the Indian Air Force is now well on its way to effectively equipping itself to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

The Air Force, currently the largest beneficiary of India's rising military budget, is in the middle of shifting its focus from being a purely Pakistan-centric force, to one that will be capable of simultaneously meeting the twin threats posed by an insecure Pakistan and an increasingly belligerent China.

In fiscal 2009-10 alone, for instance, the Air Force spent over $4 billion in capital acquisition, almost three times the amount spent by the Army. And over the next few years, the Air Force budget for new purchases is only likely to rise with plans to buy six new-generation tanker transports, 22 attack helicopters, 12 heavy-lift helicopters and nearly 200 basic trainer aircraft.

But there has been more to the Indian build-up than just hardware acquisition as India undertakes a doctrinal shift in all three forces. The IAF, for example, is currently in the middle of tweaking its ORBAT (Order of Battle). This shift has involved reviving and expanding air bases close to the border with China border, including placing a squadron each of Sukhoi-30 MKIs—currently India's most advanced fighter jets—at two hitherto small bases at Tezpur in north-east India and Bareilly in the north.

Air Force planners say this is just the beginning. Over the next three years, India has plans to deploy at least a squadron of Sukhois at Nyoma—currently just a basic air strip—about 25 kilometres from the Chinese border in the high altitude desert of Ladakh.

Military analysts say operationalization of the Nyoma airfield will be a major step in India beefing up its defences in the region close to a disputed boundary. Coupled with the Indian Army's plans to raise, induct and deploy more mountain divisions along the Chinese frontier, India hopes to have a major deterrent against any Chinese aggression.

C-17 and C-130J, all two are high maneuvrability and up to date, the actual couple best of military transport of the world . With these aircraft India can strengthen effectively its territory before any invasion. The balance in air military transportation is tilted to India over other big neighbour whom still using the obsolete one (Il-76)

we also know the IL-76 inside out. c-130 is good for night operations, air refueling, electronic warfare and launching drones.

China is working on her own large military transporter(200 ton max weight, 60 ton cargo capacity) which is due to fly next year. C-17 is a tremendous aircraft, but it is still just a transport aircraft. And there will be only 10 of them with IAF, at least within the next 5-7 years, not to mention that it costs over 400 million dollars to buy (one has to question the widsom behind this perchase given 40% of India's children are malnutritionend) why should China be worried about it? PLAAF's transport aircraft fleet is small and aging, but its shortcoming could be somewhat compensated by China's large civilian jetliner fleet which number over 1500 currently and will for sure increase further.

China presently has 20-40 ton lift capability ,at 40 tons the range of IL-76 will be cut in half,India now has over 60 ton capability, but that should not bother China?

Why should China be worried about such a tiny tactical advantage Inida will only enjoy several years from now? On China's perceived potential adversary list India is way down, and the list itself is populated by countries that possess weapons several magnitudes greater. US has over 200 such tools, and the chance of a armed conflict between China and US, at least in the eyes of the Chinese, is much greater than a conflict between China and India. If China is afraid of India's 10 C-17s, what should China do facing America's vast war mchine? Drill a hole in the sand and bury her head in it?

One thing indians do NOT understand is that China pusues her own path of development, military or civilian. What her neighbors do regarding defence purchases, is irrelevant to her. India could get a few F22 tomorrow if US decides to play santa, even if that happens China is not going to pee in her pants. There is probably a context between india and china, but it is not a military one.

India has this now, but I would agree as long as relations are good everything should be fine.

India in 4 years from now will have 24 IL-76's and 24 C-27's, and will adding more. All the while China has some outdated soviet An-70 made in Chinese model, like the MiG-1.44 is the J-20. And I am talking about the Strategic Airlift, Tactical India will be even better, There is a good chance that a 100 C-130's are ordered not the 30-J variant.

Then why bother even posting on this thread?
that 's exactly right - there seems to be a misconception by some members of this forum about the TITLE of this forum and some written or perhaps unwritten rules of this forum whic after all is akin to a society or club - and in every society/ club there are unwritten rules , arent there ?

Just because some members come from a certain country does not entitle them to carry out their nationalism on this forum - it they seem not to know how to blend in , they couold take their argument elsewhere is what i feel .-

and might i suggest some packland defence forum as a possibility ?

and might i suggest some "packland" defence forum as a possibility ?

He is trying to show the lift capacity of China by showing the Civil Aircraft sector,. What the little chicom doesnt know is the fact, they need proper infrastructure and flies un protected, and easy pickings for us. shoot them like flies. They have 17 Il-76's, for a country which has near inadequate infrastructure near our borders, while in we have 20 Il-76's and we have another 24 c-17's coming in 4 years, yes. in as little time as 4 years.

Will the IL-76 be upgraded?
Except the really old ones, who maybe cannibalized for spare parts, expect more than 24 C-17's along the years, after the first 24, to replace the slowly retiring IL-76's, 2020 Gajraj will start retiring

A civilian airliner can not be compared to a dedicated military transporter in terms of versatility, but it is still quite useful to transport large amount of troops and goods. And it is not as easy picking as the person above claims. Assuming a hypothetical tibet scenario, for india to deny chinese jetliners from flying in reinforcements, you would need to have complete air superiority over that vast area. Pretty much impossible thing if you ask me.
