China’s naval radar can monitor areas size of India

Beijing: China has developed an advanced compact size maritime radar which can maintain constant surveillance over an area of the size of India, media reported Wednesday.

The domestically-developed radar system will enable the Chinese navy to fully monitor China's seas and spot incoming threats from enemy ships, aircraft and missiles much earlier than the existing technology, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported, quoting the scientist who took part in China's Over-the-Horizon (OTH) radar programme.

Liu Yongtan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) from the Harbin Institute of Technology, is credited to have upgraded the China's radar technology and developing an advanced compact size radar for the PLA Navy's carrier fleet to "maintain constant surveillance over an area the size of India," the SCMP reported.

President Xi Jinping conferred the country's top science award, carrying a prize money of $1.116 million, to Liu and another military scientist, Qian Qihu at an event in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday for their contributions.

Qian was felicitated for setting up the theoretical system for China's modern defence engineering and contributions in creating underground nuclear shelter facilities, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

According to Liu, the ship-based OTH radar had greatly increased the range of area that the Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA) could monitor. "Relying on traditional technologies, our surveillance and monitoring could only cover about 20 per cent of our maritime territory. With the new system, we can cover the whole area," he said.

A senior member of Liu's team told the Post that the new system would be a ship-based OTH radar system. The floating radar "will increase our navy's information gathering capabilities in critical areas" including the South China Sea, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, he was quoted as saying in the SCMP.

China is not the only nation developing the technology. A major US defence contractor, Raytheon, was granted a patent in 2016 for a similar system.

The Raytheon design involves a transmitting vessel and several receiving ships with antennae mounted on the deck. Radio waves are directed into the sky by the transmitter to be collected by the receiving ships, which then pass on the signals to aircraft carriers via satellite or airborne relays.

According to a recent report China had built an antenna five times the size of New York.

Chinese military, which now has over $175 billion annual defence budget, is focussing on developing heavy military equipment to compete with US for global strategic influence.

China is investing heavily specially in development of the navy to extend its influence beyond to shores. China has developed two aircraft carriers with third in the pipeline.

SLAUGHTERBOTS China is unleashing killer robots and stealth drones that carry out targeted airstrikes without a human pressing the fire button

BY GOVERNMENT SLAVES ON 02/10/2019
Emigrate While You Still Can...
CHINA is aggressively unleashing lethal fully autonomous drones that can carry out targeted military strikes, a think tank has warned.

The killer drones and pilotless aircraft fitted with AK-47 rifles are being exported to Asia, Africa and combat zones in the Middle East.

US national security think tank Center for a New American Security (CNAS) said in a report that Chinese officials see this AI ‘arms race’ as a threat to global peace.

Gregory C Allen, the author of the report, said China is rushing to integrate ever more sophisticated artificial intelligence into weapons and military equipment.

He pointed out that drones, both large and small, are a particular example of a type of weaponry that is increasingly becoming automated.

In the US, drones are capable of basic autopilot, performing simple tasks like flying in a circle around a target.

But China is being “more aggressive about introducing greater levels of autonomy closer to lethal use of force,” he says.

One example is the Blowfish A2 drone, which China exports internationally and which Mr Allen says is advertised as being capable of “full autonomy all the way up to targeted strikes.”

‘TARGETED PRECISION STRIKES’
The Blowfish A2 “autonomously performs complex combat missions, including fixed-point timing detection and fixed-range reconnaissance, and targeted precision strikes.”

Depending on customer preferences, Chinese military drone manufacturer Ziyan offers to equip Blowfish A2 with either missiles or machine guns.

Mr Allen wrote: “Though many current generation drones are primarily remotely operated, Chinese officials generally expect drones and military robotics to feature ever more extensive AI and autonomous capabilities in the future.

“Chinese weapons manufacturers already are selling armed drones with significant amounts of combat autonomy.”

China is also interested in using AI for military command decision-making.

FUTURE OF WARFARE
According to the report, Zeng Yi, a senior executive at China’s third largest defense company, said AI will be at the core of future warfare.

“Mechanized equipment is just like the hand of the human body. In future intelligent wars, AI systems will be just like the brain of the human body,” Zeng said, according to the report.

He added that “AI may completely change the current command structure, which is dominated by humans” to one that is dominated by an “AI cluster.”

This opinion is consistent with broader thinking in Chinese military circles.

Do we have any such similar technology? Attaching AK-47 to drones is a good idea. As they are remotely controlled, we can use them for border patrol in difficult areas. It can be effective in checking infiltration from across the border. We have several drones and are working on attaching bombs/missiles to them. Something or the other is causing delays. But since AK-47 are light weight, can't we get smaller drones in large numbers? It can save precious lives of army jawans.

China is building a long-range cruise missile fired from a shipping container

(Russian Club-K picture)

China is building a long-range cruise missile fired from a shipping container that could turn Beijing's large fleet of freighters into potential warships and commercial ports into future missile bases. The new missile is in flight testing and is a land-attack variant of an advanced anti-ship missile called the YJ-18C, according to American defense officials. The new missile also could undermine China's current buying & building spree for international commercial port projects. The missile will be deployed in launchers that appear from the outside to be standard international shipping containers used throughout the world for moving millions of tons of goods, often on the deck of large freighters.

The YJ-18C is China's version of the Club-K cruise missile built by Russia that also uses a launcher disguised as a shipping container. Israel also is working on a container-launched missile called the Lora. The YJ-18C container missile also is being developed as China is engaged in a major global program called the Belt and Road Initiative that will provide Chinese military forces and warships with expanded access through a network of commercial ports around the world.

China operates or is building deep water ports in several strategic locations, including Bahamas, Panama, and Jamaica that could be used covertly to deploy ships carrying the YJ-18C. Other locations include Pakistan's Gwadar port near the Arabian Sea and in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa close to the strategic choke point of the Bab el Mandeb at the southern end of the Red Sea.

Navy Capt. Jim Fanell, a former Fleet intelligence chief, said a containerized YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missile would add a significant threat to the Navy given the volume of Chinese container ships that enter US ports on the west & east coast, within range of the US fleet. "If this capability is confirmed, it will require a completely new screening regime for all PRC flagged commercial ships bound for U.S. ports," Fanell said. Additionally the container-launched missiles could be targeted in foreign ports used by Chinese-flagged merchant vessels.

"Potentially, Chinese missile launching containers could be stored near the Port of Seattle, waiting for the day they can launch an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) warhead-armed missiles over the Bangor nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) base," Fisher said. "The EMP blast might take out electronics on submarines & all over the base without having to launch strikes from China. Washington would be in chaos, would not know against whom to retaliate & perhaps China uses US distraction to begin its real objective, to attack Taiwan."

We should be wishing for demonstration of this capability by Chinese ASAP.

This will the right excuse to restrict Chinese container ships 300-400 km from anti OBOR countries.

For a country that wants to dominate global sea trade it really is the dumbest thing they could do.

they will have to do a test , otherwise what was the point of making it public. as far as china is concerned, nothing gets into public domain unless CCP wants to.

CNN: New satellite images may reveal China's next aircraft carrier

Hong Kong (CNN)New satellite images published by a US think tank may provide the world's first look at China's next aircraft carrier, as construction progresses on a mysterious large vessel in a shipyard outside Shanghai.

Significant new activity at the Jiangnan Shipyard was captured in satellite images from April, published by Washington-based think tank the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
According to CSIS, they show a massive bow and main hull section of a large vessel under construction. At points, the hull section is as wide as 40 meters (131 feet).
Experts said while it was difficult to be sure, the size and scale of the new vessel strongly suggested China's much-anticipated new aircraft carrier, referred to as Type 002.

"What we are seeing at Jiangnan is consistent with what we would expect for the build of the Type 002. The vessel under construction is rather large, so that limits what else it could be," CSIS analyst Matthew Funaiole said.

Rumors that the Chinese military was constructing a third, more modern aircraft carrier have been circling for more than a year. It was only in November that state media Xinhua first hinted at a new vessel.
"Six years have passed, our (first) domestic carrier has been trialed, entry into service is just around the corner. The new aircraft carrier has also been built on the slipway," the article said. The US Department of Defense has estimated that it could be completed as early as 2022.
China currently has one aircraft carrier in operation, the Liaoning. Another is undergoing sea trials: the unnamed Type 001a, the country's first domestically built aircraft carrier.
Funaiole said with three operational aircraft carriers in its fleet, China would be joining "an exclusive club of countries."

Director of the International Security Program at Sydney's Lowy Institute, Sam Roggeveen, said while China's first two carriers are variations on an older Soviet-era design, the Type 002 is expected to have more in common with advanced US vessels.
"The previous two had what they call a ski jump ramp which allows aircraft to take off without any mechanical assistance," he said, adding the new model is likely to have a more-advanced catapult launch system.
"You can launch more aircraft, and heavier aircraft, which effectively means the ship becomes much more capable."

In the past few years, China's navy has expanded at an increasingly rapid pace. Between 2016 and 2017, 32 new ships were commissioned by the PLA, according to US government reports. In comparison, the US commissioned 13.
Since 2014, China has launched more submarines, warships, principal amphibious vessels and auxiliaries than the total number of ships currently serving in the navies of Germany, India, Spain, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, according to a 2018 report by think tank IISS.

Production capacity is still increasing as well. Satellite images of Jiangnan Shipyard outside of Shanghai showed it had increased in size by 64% over the past decade.
Beijing's domestically-produced aircraft carrier, the Type 001a, is likely to be put into service in 2019, according to a new Pentagon report, which said China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) was developing into a "global force."
"The PLAN's ability to perform missions beyond the first (Pacific) island chain is modest but growing as it gains more experience operating in distant waters and acquires larger and more advanced platforms," the Pentagon report said.

But Roggeveen said it could be a while before the Chinese navy began to steadily churn out aircraft carriers at the rate it has other ships.
"China's now on such a steep learning curve that they're not really at the point where they can start building several of these without learning and refining their design as they go," he said.
"They're aiming for something that I think they can't get in one leap."

China's new 40,000 ton 075 landing helicopter dock may be under construction with Janes report link below

https://www.janes.com/article/88529/china-s-eighth-type-071-in-advanced-stage-of-construction

the relevant images are circulated on Chinese military forums with very bad visibility so I'm not gonna upload it here until better satellite images appear

Janes report: Images have emerged on Chinese online forums showing that the hull of an eighth Type 071 (Yuzhao)-class landing platform dock (LPD) vessel for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is at an advanced stage of construction at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.

The ship is being built in the same dry dock used for construction of the seventh Type 071. A considerable number of modules for the latest ship were evident on the dockside before the seventh vessel was launched on 28 December 2018, which has enabled the hull of the latest LPD to be assembled in less than six months.

In a 2 May report to Congress about military and security developments involving China, the US Department of Defense (DoD) said that China will probably continue constructing Type 071s even as the PLAN pursues a follow-on class of amphibious assault ships that are not only larger but also incorporate a full flight deck for helicopters.

That new ship class, known as the Type 075, may be already being built in the same dock at Hudong-Zhonghua. Satellite images reveal that alongside the eighth Type 071 a second and larger ship is also being built. Construction of the Type 075 class has been anticipated for some time and there have been persistent rumours for several months that construction is under way.

The evidence available so far is insufficient to state conclusively that this is the first Type 075 and the particular dry dock has previously been used for naval and commercial ships.

photos posted online suggest the unidentified flying objects were first seen in the wee hours of Saturday in provinces such as Shandong, Liaoning and Hebei, at a time when large portions of the Bohai Sea, plus the Bohai Strait between Shandong and Liaoning, were cordoned off by the People’s Liberation Army for a massive naval drill.

Netizens soon suggested the UFOs streaking across the sky were missiles and projectiles fired by the PLA in the Bohai Sea, the innermost gulf of the Yellow Sea.

Chinese papers reported that the PLA conducted two military exercises in the Bohai Sea on Saturday and Sunday, in waters between Shandong and Liaoning.

More sightings of similar UFOs were reported on Sunday morning, from stargazers living further inland in the central, landlocked provinces of Shanxi and Henan. This could be an indication that missiles launched by the PLA traversed no less than 1,000 kilometers, likely powerful ballistic missiles fired from a submarine.

State media Weibo account confirmed it's not UFO.

Some analysts suspect that the missiles concerned could be the JL-3, a third-generation intercontinental ballistic missile powered by solid fuel and launched from a submarine in its final stage of development. It would likely be deployed on a modern Chinese submarine known as the Type 096.

The JL-3 is rumored to have a range of up to 12,000 kilometers, meaning that cities on the west coast of the US like San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle were well within its range if fired from China’s littoral waters in the East China Sea. The JL-3 is a variant of the land-based DF-41 missile, the buttress of the PLA’s nuclear deterrence, and can carry multiple warheads.

The drill was held when China’s Defense Minister Wei Fenghe was in Singapore for this year’s Shangri-La Dialogue, along with his US counterpart, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan.

Jane's report: The 8th 071 was launched today/yesterday (depending on timezone).

The eighth Type 071 (Yuzhao)-class amphibious assault ship on order for China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) was launched at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai on 6 June, making it the fourth of these 20,000 tonne landing platform dock (LPD) vessels to have entered the water since June 2017.

Construction of the seventh LPD began in April 2018, with the ship entering the water on 28 December 2018: a period of eight months to assemble the complete hull and launch the ship. Assembly of Hull 8 was carried out in the same part of the dock vacated following the launch of Hull 7, meaning that Hull 8 was completed in just six months. Fitting out and trials are likely to take a further 12 months before the ship is ready for commissioning.

As previously reported by Jane's, another hull is being constructed in the same dock as the LPDs, and it seems certain that this will be the PLAN's first Type 075 helicopter assault ship. Progress on this ship has also been rapid, as assembly must have commenced after the dock was drained following the launch of the seventh Type 071 in December 2018 and a large part of the Type 075 was sufficiently complete to be watertight and float when the dock was flooded again for the most recent LPD launch.

Although assembly of the Type 075 may take longer than the repeat builds of the Type 071, given that it is both larger and a new design, it looks likely that it will be launched before the end of 2019.

The most recent satellite imagery shows that the hull of the Type 075 in its current state has a beam of about 32 m. As the bow and stern sections have yet to be added, its length cannot yet be established but it seems likely that the displacement will be about 35,000-40,000 tonnes.

new close up image of China's third aircraft carrier under construction

I'm not sure when and how this photo was taken by amateur, possibly using a drone. The image first circulated on China's Weibo on June 13, 2019. Rumors claim it's conventional. Whether it's EMALS or not is still debatable.

How a Big U.S. Chip Maker Gave China the ‘Keys to the Kingdom’
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. transformed itself from a financially struggling company to an investor’s dream in just three years, a turnaround that began with a decision to help Chinese partners develop advanced computer-chip technology.

That deal may have helped save the company, but it alarmed U.S. national-security officials, who saw it as a threat to their goal to rein in China’s supercomput-ing industry. Last week, after years of friction, the Commerce Department issued an order that effectively bars several Chinese entities—including AMD’s partners—from obtaining American technology.

It looked as though the U.S. had succeeded in stanching the flow of cutting-edge computer technology to China. In reality, it was too late. Chinese versions of AMD chips already have been rolling off production lines. That technology is helping China in its race with the U.S. to build the first next-generation supercom-puter—an essential tool for advanced civilian and military applications.

AMD’s Chinese partner, a military contractor, already used those chips to build what may prove to be the world’s fastest supercomputer, according to high-performance computing experts briefed on the project.

The partnership with the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip maker was a game changer for China, which has long been unable to match the U.S.’s supercomputing power because of its inferior chips, one product the country has so far struggled to master. The AMD deal gave China access to state-of-the-art x86chips, which are made by only two companies in the world: AMD and Intel Corp. They are the most dominant processor technology in use today.

Sun Ninghui, head of the computing-technology institute at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which works closely with Sugon, likened its chip development strategy to what China did with high-speed trains—introduce a foreign technology to the market, absorb it, and then innovate to make China a leader.
