Dhaka, Sep 27 (bdnews24.com) – China is interested to build a deep seaport in Bangladesh and now waiting for the government's response to go ahead, says Chinese ambassador to Dhaka Zhang Xianyi.

"Two Chinese companies have expressed their desire to develop the port but the ball is now not in the court of the Chinese side," he said at a roundtable on Bangladesh-China bilateral relations organised by Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in the city.

The last I heard of this is that the Bangladesh Govt was not too happy with the Chinese Feasibility study and has asked for the resubmission of the same, after incorporating the requirements of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh to persuade China to use Chittagong port

(Reuters) - Bangladesh will persuade China to use Chittagong port as a commercial outlet for its southern Yunnan province, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said on Sunday.

The Bangladesh stance was announced nearly three months after Bangladesh had agreed to allow India, Nepal and Bhutan to use its two sea ports mainly Chittagong port.

"It will be a great achievement if China agrees to use our Chittagong port, which we want to develop into a regional commercial hub by building a deep seaport in the Bay of Bengal," she told a news conference.

The offer for Chittagong port to Beijing will be discussed when Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visits China from Wednesday on a five-day itinerary, Moni said.

The impoverished south Asian country has taken plans to build an $8.7 billion deep-sea port in three phases to raise bulk cargo handling capacity to 100 million tonnes and container handling to 3.0 million twenty-feet equivalent unit (TEU) containers annually by 2055.

Presently the port handles 30.5 million tonnes of bulk cargo and 1.1 million TEUs annually.

Port officials said when built the port would serve Nepal, Bhutan, southern China, Myanmar and the northeastern region of India.

To use Chittagong port China will need a road or railway link or both between Kunming, the capital of southern Yunnan province with Chittagong via Myanmar, Moni said.

Myanmar last year had agreed to expand a planned road project with Bangladesh to link up with China in a tri-nation network, another foreign ministry official said......

This extract indicates the Bangladesh is keener to improve the existing infrastructure.

Because it will be linking China to Bangladesh via Myanmar, Myanmar will have to take it easy with the Rohingya menace that they are currently combating.

What is the possibility of China faking the feasibility of the port to make sure it gets the contract to make the port and get a hold in BD?

The first-phase construction on Bangladesh's first deep-sea port in the Bay of Bengal is expected to be completed in 2015 and its operation will begin in 2016, the country's Shipping Minister Mohammad Afsarul Amin said on Wednesday.

After a high-level meeting here on Wednesday, the minister told reporters that the government will start a three-phase construction of the proposed deep-sea port in the Bay of Bengal by the end of next year.

He said the proposed port will be established near Sonadia Island under the country's southeastern Cox's Bazar district, about 391 km away of capital Dhaka, at a cost of about 600 billion taka (about 8.57 billion US dollars).

"Together with the second and the final phases, the work is planned to end in 2055," he said, adding that the construction work of the second phase will start between 2016 and 2017.

The high-level meeting was held to discuss the study report of a Japanese consultant on technical and economic feasibility of the deep-sea port.

The minister said it will take one year to have a complete design of the port.

Amin earlier said the project would be implemented with public- private joint investment if necessary shares would be floated in the capital market.

Bangladesh's shipping ministry has taken the deep-sea port construction as a priority project to develop the entire region as a business hub.

The shipping minister said in the first phase, nine jetty- berths will be constructed at a cost of 130 billion taka (about 1. 86 billion US dollars).

The country's premier Chittagong Sea Port Authority Chairman Commodore RU Ahmed, who was also present at the meeting, said the consultant firm has prepared the draft report on the deep-sea port after hydrographic and other studies.

It was said in the meeting that the deep-sea port is expected to boost export-import trade and increase the country's GDP growth by 1.5 percent.
