China ranked first in the world for the most Top 10% referenced scientific papers in the following science categories: "computer science, mathematics, materials science and engineering."
"The U.S., on the other hand, led the way in physics, environmental and earth sciences, basic life science and clinical medicine."
China leads in four science categories and the US leads in another four science categories. It's a tie.
On the Nature Index, the US leads China in the total number of cited quality science papers. However, the total US output is inflated by clinical medical studies. Overall, China and the US are evenly matched as co-leaders of science.
