China jails relative of Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo
BEIJING: A Chinese court on Sunday sent Liu Hui, the brother-in-law of Nobel peace prize winner Liu Xiaobo, to 11 years in jail on charges of committing fraud. However, Liu's wife, Liu Xia, described the order issued by a court in Huairou as persecution and an "illegal verdict".
Liu Hui, a manager in a real estate company in Shenzhen, was convicted of cheating a person, Zhang Bing, of $490,000 working along with a colleague.
The 2010 winner of Nobel peace prize is undergoing a 11-year jail sentence on charges of subversion and organizing a petition to overthrow the government since 2009. His wife, Liu Xia, is not allowed to visit her husband in jail although there are no charges against her. Liu has also complained the government has placed restrictions on her movement around her own house.
"This is simply persecution. This is completely an illegal verdict," Liu Xia said reacting to the judgment, adding she had "completely lost hope" in the government.
It's usual for Chinese prosecutors to move sensitive cases to courts in areas different from where a crime or an accusation about a crime takes place to avoid any local reactions. In this case, the case has been moved from Shenzhen to a court near Beijing.
"As Liu Hui's defence attorney, I definitely do not approve of this verdict, because we see this fundamentally as a civil issue, and it fundamentally does not constitute criminal fraud. Also, there is not sufficient evidence," lawyer Mo Shaoping said.
An official of the European Union, which is closely tracking cases relating to the Nobel laureate, urged China to release him and lift restrictions on his wife.
"As it is clear Liu Xia is under house arrest, EU urges the Chinese authorities to end all forms of extra legal restriction on her," Raphael Droszewski, a first secretary at the European Union Delegation to China, said.
