US report finds China human rights worse under President Xi
US questions country has tightened restrictions on civil society, rights advocates, journalists and religious organisations

A US report released on Thursday says China's human rights record has worsened in key areas over the past year and that limits on free speech and assembly are growing.

The annual report by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China said the country has tightened restrictions on civil society, rights advocates, journalists and religious organisations.

It added that President Xi Jinping has adhered "to the authoritarian model of his predecessors" since taking power last year.

That model "poses a serious challenge to US-China relations and China's own development," the report said. It recommended that the US press for more freedoms in China, including by looking at how it issues visas to Chinese officials.

"Human rights and rule of law conditions in China overall did not improve this past year, and declined in some of the areas covered by this report," it said. "The Chinese government and Communist Party continued to emphasise authoritarian control at the expense of human rights and the rule of law."

The independent committee is mandated to issue the annual report but does not have power to set policy.

Human rights advocates have denounced what they say is a crackdown on dissent by China's government that has swept up advocates for minority groups, pro-democracy lawyers and others. The report listed several dissidents who have been imprisoned, including scholar Ilham Tohti, who has defended the Uighur minority group and was sentenced to life in prison last month on separatism charges.

"There's been a systematic tightening and also strategic restrictions on civil society in China, targeting pillars of civil society such as the Internet, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), journalists and activists," said Maya Wang, a China researcher for the US-based group Human Rights Watch. "We think there has been quite a significant and obvious deterioration since President Xi came to power."

The Chinese government did not immediately respond to the report.

One has to be a human to recognise others to be human.

How can an authoritarian Communist dictatorship be expected to be human to recognise their people to be human. Communists merely take their people to be tools who will toil to keep the Communist Lords and Princelings in the lap of luxury and comfort.

The dictums that the Chinese Communist apply to governance are:

1. He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.

2. War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength.

3. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—for ever.

4. If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.

5. But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.

6. Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.

7. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know what no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now you begin to understand me.

8. In the face of pain there are no heroes.

9. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.

10 The choice for mankind lies between freedom and happiness and for the great bulk of mankind, happiness is better. (Posters will notice that our Chinese poster friends emphasise that happiness with money in the pocket is better than freedom thought, freedom and democracy)

It would be a misnomer to mention human rights alongside China!!

China cannot change its president. China and CCP are two different entities. CCP is a parasitic alien that infests the Chinese body politic and cannot be eradicated without major surgical intervention.

China should change its president.

A Pakistani to say China should change its president is a real irony... Must be seriously cut up with Xi because it has give Pakistan a total miss or the Pakistani is a bleeding heart jihadi angry with the oppression in Xinjiang.
I can't believe that for you Hong Kong will figure anywhere closer than a few light years away from your narrow corridor of concerns.
China should change its president.
