Huawei now installing the 1 second / 1 KM, liquid cooling charging station over the nation!ChaoJi Charging System: Excellence Goes Beyond Charging Speed
As winter approaches, many new energy vehicle owners have reported that due to extremely low temperatures, the charging speed of their vehicles has significantly decreased. In fact, slow charging has always been one of the pain points for new energy vehicle owners during the charging process.
The ChaoJi charging system (hereinafter referred to as ChaoJi), led by the China Electricity Council and involving power grids, charging operators, connector manufacturers, and some vehicle manufacturers, is expected to solve this problem. According to reports, compared to the current mainstream fast-charging charging piles supporting 60 kilowatts or 120 kilowatts, ChaoJi's charging voltage and current limits have been increased to 1500 volts and 600 amperes, respectively, with a maximum power of up to 900 kilowatts.
So, besides improving charging speed, what other aspects does ChaoJi have compared to the current charging system? What are its future application scenarios? With these questions in mind, Science and Technology Daily interviewed relevant experts.
Existing Charging Systems Face Three Major Issues
In recent years, as the popularity of electric vehicles continues to increase, charging issues have become more prominent. Liu Yongdong, Secretary-General of the China Electricity Council and Director of the Standardization Management Center, introduced that from a technical perspective, there are currently three main issues with new energy vehicle charging systems both at home and abroad.
First, the technical route is complex, and systems are not compatible with each other. In addition to China's self-developed national standard charging system (GB/T), mainstream charging systems around the world also include Japan's CHAdeMO, CCS jointly developed by Europe and the United States, etc. Communication protocols and power levels vary between different systems, increasing the design and production costs of vehicle manufacturers. Second, the technology's forward-looking nature needs to be strengthened, and backward compatibility issues should be further considered. In the early stages of the construction of new energy vehicle charging facilities, most countries lacked a systematic architecture, resulting in the current mainstream charging systems being unable to meet the future development needs of new energy vehicles (such as high-power charging and advanced communication). Third, product reliability needs to be further improved. These issues have limited the continuous development of the new energy vehicle industry.
"ChaoJi is not just a connector, but a complete electric vehicle DC charging system, including charging connection components, control and guidance circuits, and thermal management," said Liu Yongdong. Compared to the existing mainstream charging systems, ChaoJi has outstanding advantages in forward and backward compatibility, charging safety, charging power, user experience, and international recognition.
Forward Compatibility While Backward Compatibility
Does the emergence of the new charging system mean that the existing charging system needs to be dismantled? The answer is no. ChaoJi can achieve a smooth upgrade between old and new generations of charging systems.
How is the smooth upgrade of the charging system achieved? Zhang Xuan, a senior engineer at State Grid Power Science Research Institute Co., Ltd., mentioned at the 2023 (6th) Distribution Technology Summit Forum that ChaoJi uses an adapter conversion interface, allowing existing charging facilities to connect with ChaoJi-compatible vehicles without any modification.
At the same time, ChaoJi charging piles can also charge vehicles using the existing charging interfaces.
Moreover, ChaoJi is a "growable" system. Liu Yongdong introduced that ChaoJi achieves forward compatibility while also providing for backward compatibility through reserved upgrade interfaces. It is understood that ChaoJi has reserved upgrade interfaces for both software and hardware, meeting various needs of niche markets.
For example, ChaoJi can achieve ultra-high power charging through interface combination upgrades, increasing the charging speed by an order of magnitude, and meeting the charging needs of heavy-duty commercial vehicles, electric ships, and electric aircraft.
Realizing vehicle-pile-network interaction is also one of the development goals of new energy vehicles. Vehicle-pile-network interaction refers to reducing the charging power of charging piles during peak electricity consumption periods and using new energy vehicles as mobile energy storage devices to transmit electricity to the power grid, thereby reducing the load on the power grid. ChaoJi has also reserved solutions for realizing vehicle-pile-network interaction in terms of standard construction and communication protocols.
In addition to being compatible with China's current charging system, ChaoJi can also be compatible with other charging systems worldwide. It is reported that ChaoJi has the same underlying logic as other charging systems around the world and can be compatible with the existing mainstream international DC charging systems.
"We have involved experts from countries such as Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands in the development and research of ChaoJi," said Zhang Xuan. Currently, ChaoJi has been fully adopted in the relevant standard proposals of the International Electrotechnical Commission. "ChaoJi has both an international platform and international recognition," said Liu Yongdong.
