Due to export restrictions imposed in 2020, all American technology supplied to Huawei or its subsidiaries must get an export license from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security, which would review it with a presumption of denial. As a result, Huawei lost access to TSMC's and Samsung Foundry's leading-edge chip production capacities and had to use Qualcomm's system-on-chips for its smartphones while waiting for China-based SMIC to develop a refined version of its 7nm fabrication technology, which some call a 5nm-class production node.

While SMIC is also blacklisted in the U.S. and can get new production tools only if the U.S. DoC BIS grants an appropriate export license, the company has managed to obtain equipment it needed from American companies. Apparently, these tools were used to make chips for Huawei without obtaining an appropriate export license.

McCaul pointed to the $23 billion worth of licenses that the BIS approved for U.S. companies to sell technology to Chinese entities in the Q1 2022, suggesting it shows excessive tolerance.

Cooperation between Huawei and Leica is finished.

Leica now is with Mi.

Huawei launched the X Mega tech from Mate 50, Mate 60 Pro now is 2nd Gen.
Mi software comes off as comical to me....one reason to drop money was that camera. When I was in Bangkok, I saw a Blood pressure watch but it did not work for some reason...hope they thinned it down

how much? Not going to find a big market though outside China due to google block of its services....but I like the hardware, is the camera still Leica?
Probably not a large international market in tge beginning but a start :) These are on HarmonyOS and will have their own eco-system. Google started somewhere too ;)

Pricing is about $1200 for Pro+ and a bit more for Mate X5.

Anything outside China will be marked up massively:

The Mate X5 foldable will be very expensive even inside China with demand. The older Mate X3 was going for up to 19000 Yuans (almost $2600.)

wow, here I am that thinks smartphones even at Rs25k are expensive every 4 years....I don;t think many countries would allow the satellite tech to creep through for security reasons and I don't think Chinese software will catch on either....none of the chinese software like wechat took hold outside china except for tiktok...More likely all big markets like India, Russia and China will have their own versions with the way world is localizing. There will be market as west gets more insane by day and antagonized more countries around the world.

We'll see. At the very least, just taking over the Chinese market from Apple would massively shift everything in the industry.

Also despite the bans, Chinese software are making some headway:

The Kirin 9000S is China's WS-10, it is the current mass produced chip powering all of Huawei's frontline flagship phones.

But it is not the WS-15 ;)

China's exports have dropped for fourth month in a row as the "world's factory" struggles with weak demand at home and abroad.
Exports fell 8.8% in August compared with a year earlier, while imports dropped 7.3%, official figures show.

However, those declines were not as bad as expected and an improvement on the previous month.
China is facing several post-pandemic challenges, including a property crisis and weak consumer spending.

There has been a slump in global demand for Chinese-made goods in the wake of coronavirus and the ongoing trade dispute with the US. It is having a major impact on a key source of growth for the country's economy.
On Wednesday, a new report by the US Census Bureau showed that China's share of US goods imports fell to the lowest level since 2006 in the year to the end of July.

The share of imported goods from China was 14.6% over the period. That is down from a peak of 21.8% in the year to the end of March 2018, before then-President Donald Trump ramped up the US-China trade war.
Chinese authorities are also faced with a deepening slump in the country's real estate market as some of its biggest developers are struggling financially.
Beijing has so far avoided launching a large stimulus programme to boost the economy.
Instead it has opted for introducing a series of measures in recent months to help support people and businesses.
The country's central bank has cut interest rates, while Beijing has announced plans to allow a dozen of the country's biggest cities to cut minimum deposits for homebuyers. Lenders have also been encouraged to reduce rates on existing mortgages.
Other measures have also been announced from increasing personal income tax allowances for children's education to cutting the duty on share trading.

Ahead of the publication of the trade figures, Chinese state-run newspaper The Global Times ran a story on its English language website criticising negative comments by Western politicians and media about the country's economy.
"The reality is that Chinese economy is well on the recovery track with increasingly strong innovation and green development momentum, though the economy faces some difficulties and challenges under the impact of global economic slowdown," it said.
