China cautions India on troop build-up near border

Ananth Krishnan
BEIJING: China on Thursday rejected suggestions that incursions by its troops into the Indian territory were on the rise, and cautioned India that any move to increase troop presence along the disputed border in Arunachal Pradesh “would only lead to a rivalry between the two countries.”

Arunachal Pradesh Governor J.J. Singh said earlier this week that two Army divisions of around 30,000 soldiers each would be deployed along the disputed border as part of a “planned augmentation of [India’s] capabilities to defend the country.” Mr. Singh’s statement followed reported claims from officials that Chinese incursions into Indian territory had become more frequent in the past one year.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters on Thursday that China “cannot accept such an allegation.”

Mr. Qin said: “China and India have never demarcated the border. To resolve this issue at an early date is one of the 10 strategies to improve China-India relations. The two countries have reached a consensus on resolving this issue, and we hope the two countries will follow the 10 principles and jointly safeguard stability and tranquillity in the border areas. China has always followed such an attitude to settle the issue.”

Mr. Singh’s statement evoked a strong reaction from the local media and political analysts in China.

The People’s Daily, official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, said in an editorial on Thursday that a decision to move more troops to the border would lead to a rivalry between the two countries, and asked the Indian government to consider “whether or not it can afford the consequences of a potential confrontation with China.”

It said, “China is seen in India as both a potential threat and a competitor to surpass. But India can’t actually compete with China in a number of areas, like international influence, overall national power and economic scale. India apparently has not yet realised this.”

The paper described as “wishful thinking” that “gratitude for India’s restraint” in joining the “ring around China” established by the United States and Japan would see China deferring to Indian demands on territorial disputes.

“China won’t make any compromises in its border disputes with India,” it said.

While both China and India have agreed in principle to maintain “peace and tranquillity” along the disputed border, talks have made modest progress.

What a load of crap. Chini's realised that they can't do shit about any disputes and are worthless like Pakistan in actually making India give up any part of the country. So they are trying to write brave words and hoping that we give up our security for these morons to continue intruding on our territory.

Actually pretty funny that if they consider India to be no threat, why are they sweating like pigs over troops increase by India? They know that they can't do shit about it, definitely not attack us.

So yeah, nice chinese propaganda available to you thanks to traitorous shit of the editor at The Hindu.

PS: I do hope that the government gives them a fitting reply instead of the usual: "We are not happy about all this, so we have called their ambassador to whine about this news." < Which is pretty much Congress's reply to everyone in the neighbourhood.

easy, CHina's stick to AP is just a weight uesful to the boundary negotiation.

CHinese retreatment in 1962 after full victory just proved that AP is not what china wants.

Then what does China want?
in 1962, we just didn't want india to move north on!

of course now, the power balance is better to CHina now. so what CHina wants should be be more.

for example, Dawan, as Tibetan historical territorial, should be returned .

But India had made it quite clear in 1962 that it was only going to move up to the Mcmahon line which it considered to be the international border between the two countries. No question of moving up further than that.

Now, you say you only want Tawang, but 2 years ago, the Chinese ambassador gave a controversial interview to an Indian newspaper where he said that China claims the whole of AP, not just Tawang. Now you have to be realistic. China might be more powerful than India right now, but it's not so powerful that it can take the whole of AP by force from India. So why bite off more than you can swallow?

You can keep Aksai Chin if we get to keep AP. How's that sound?

Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma were all under the rule of Indian kings earlier. We can probably take Sri Lanka too, citing the Ramayana. :D

I wonder if Maldives falls under the subcontinent category.

Since the Himalayas was born after India collided with Asia, perhaps we have to lay claim over Tibet too.

I really don't understand the controversy. These kind of warnings are nearly routine now. Every single time a country moves troops into another region, inevitably a country will complain (take Russian troop movements, NK and SK troop movements..etc..). It's more of a formality now.

And that is leading to further rivarly... why can't the CCP simply shut its mouth more often than not?

Err... no. The only reason why the PLA retreated was because it had ran out of ammo, food and fuel. Oh, by the way, the PLA had outrun its lines of communications as well. At about the same time, two very big Indian Army Corps were getting ready to move into the North East and take the PLA head on. Had the PLA stayed, the 1962 war would have been rather different. Hence, they ran back across the border and declared a ceasefire, which we accepted. As far as Aksai Chin goes, we never had any direct control of that territory though we claimed it to be Indian.

The only thing you won in 1962 was the claim that you "taught India a lesson."

Try that today, and we wouldn't mind letting the PLA know where it really stands.

Oh, and Tawang is Indian territory... live with it.

More than the comments about the border dispute, words such as "can India afford a rivalry with China", "India cannot compete with China in matters of international influence, economy", shows that the Chinese have a big superiority complex and want to rub it into India. All this stems from the fact that it has a lotbof money and a booming economy. What China is forgetting that India too is booming. We started 15 yrs later China, and we will eventually be there. Also Indias military and alliances are better than 61. It cannot do anything to India now and so it's playing the war of words trying to scare the government and the people of India. What China doesn't realize is that the scars of 61 don't scare India but has made it stronger and more assertive and that's why it's doing things luke moving soldiers, advanced fighters etc to take care of any misadventure by China and that is what is irking the Chinese.

in 1962, the "M-Line" definited by Indian's map was even to the north of "M-line" definited by britishman's map.

at that time, Indian unilaterally Moved north and occupied a small belt to the north of "M-Line"definited by britishman's map.

Chinese government thought that it was the first step of Indian army to move north further .

that was a tactic of negotiation and bargain.

when you want 10000 USD ,you sometimes have to offer a inquirey of 100000 USD.

Move further north where? Into Lhasa? Or march all the way to Beijing? Cmon, that's BS and you know it. Where did your generals think the Indian army was going to get supplies from? Over the Himalayas?

Even your army had to go back across the Mcmahon line after coming too deep into Indian territory because your supply lines were overstretched and you had neither ammo nor food for your soldiers left. Remember, during the war, after overrunning many Indian positions, your government offered a ceasefire if India was willing to withdraw 20 miles behind the "new" border established by your invading army, and India refused. But your army withdrew anyway, because they were stretched too far and couldn't go on.

Please give links to support your claim of Indian army moving beyond the Mcmahon line. I have not heard of that.

Well, that tactic badly misfired. Everyone in India was quite angry with the claim and believed that China has never let go of its aggressive designs on India. As it is, China has occupied 38,000 sq km of Indian territory in Aksai Chin.

And then you ask why India is suspicious of China or is allying with the US.

forget it.

of all disputed ares, only Tawang was definitly the historical part of Tibet.

both Aksai Chin or most of AP were unmanned vacuum . they were neither part of China nor part of India before WW II ended.

since India now sticks to Aksai chin controlled by China, why can't China stick to AP controlled by India?

it is a game of bargaining.:blum3:

if unilateral retreatment can not be accepted to indian, so is to CHinese.

Besides, both the Chinese and Indian sides had agreed many times before in principle that any boundary settlement would not involve the displacement of settled people. Which means that both countries will only trade land that is uninhabited. But then Chinese govt started asking for Tawang, which is an important Buddhist center and is also home to many people. These people send their representatives to the Indian parliament after general elections. There's no way these people will agree to become part of China just because China wants them.

Arunachal Pradesh was definitely part of British India and was inhabited for at least a thousand years before WWII. Aksai Chin was uninhabited but was within the border of British India, and was not ever claimed by Tibetian or Chinese people. Yet, China built a road through it in the early 1950s. That road is extremely vital to your security installations because it's the only one that connects Xinjiang to Tibet.

So China basically started this dispute by constructing a road through Indian territory and then claiming even more territory in AP. So it's up to your govt to make concessions for peace, not India.

well, today, the power balance is much more benefical to China than it was in 1962.

with the expanding national compound power as the base,, CHina's postion in the negotication would go on being improved.

the pressure on India would be heavier and heavier.
