China has banned its two-million strong military from using social networking and matchmaking websites "to prevent the leak of sensitive information". Chinese soldiers have also been barred from using the internet outside the army without permission.

The soldiers have been banned from using the internet to make friends, as authorities seek to prevent sensitive information being revealed, the People's Liberation Army Daily reported.

The new rules also ban them from watching or listening to political programmes from overseas media.

A joint notice issued by the General Staff Headquarters and the General Political Department of the PLA said that the entire army and the People's Armed Police should tighten administration over the practice of soldiers making friends online.

The measures are aimed at preventing violations of law and to protect military information from being leaked, it said.

According to it, four types of websites have become popular among soldiers which included social networking, matchmaking, blogs and WAP websites for mobile phones in recent years.

Since social networking and matchmaking websites usually require users to submit personal information such as occupation, address and contact details, soldiers risk revealing the locations of military camps and their contacts when logging in and communicating with people online, it said.

There have also been cases of soldiers who have revealed military secrets by uploading personal photos online either in uniform or during military training, which could be used by "enemy agents" to gain military intelligence, the newspaper said.

For soldiers who are about to retire from the army, posting resumes online for job-hunting purposes is also dangerous as they may contain military intelligence, it said.

According to the Regulations on Routine Service of the PLA, soldiers are not allowed to use mass media for matchmaking or making friends.

Though China banned overseas online social networking sites like, Facebook and Twitter, the country's over 470 million internet users have developed the Chinese versions of such networks like qq.com which have tens and millions of subscribers.

"It's a prevalently accepted regulation around the world to limit the use of the internet by soldiers as the internet security situation worsens," He Tongqing, a lawyer in Beijing, told the paper.

"Once you expose your military identity, online spies will make you a target for obtaining military information through various and advanced technology," He said.

The joint instruction called for soldiers to improve their consciousness of defence and self-discipline, and said stern action would be taken to punish those who have revealed military secrets through the internet, it said.

So that it is easy to crush dissidents if Tiananmen Square repeats itself. How do people live with everyday gag orders like these? I feel for the Chinese, poor chaps.

To prevent soldiers from leaking military secrecy, I don't see any problem with this ban. If Indian army is willing to take that risk, that is fine with us.

The more soldiers interact with common Chinese, the more they bond. And in a Tiananmen Square like situation, armed forces will be unwilling to use force to subdue or kill. CCP fears dissent too much.

Buddy, internet isn't the only way of people to people interaction. And to be honest, internet is the worst way of people to people interaction, do you feel any bond between Chinese and Indians on this forum?

And CPC doesn't forbid soldiers from interacting with people in other ways, so your conspiracy theory is just a joke.

You think, what you think is a joke. Do you know how many Chinese secret military projects were exposed accidently through internet by people who were invloved in the project?

On your narrow mind, everything CPC does is a conspiracy, everything CPC does it to stop people from getting to know the outside world, I am really wondering what the Indian media has done to you to twist your mind like that.

If CPC really wants to disconnect Chinese from the world, the best thing to do is cutting off all the internet in China, forbidding people from learning English and travelling abroad.

Chinese and Indian do not bond well not because of the internet, but because of China's bond with Pakistan, and rouge regimes alike. And as I said before, CCP fears dissent, way too much. Listen to only what the mouthpieces of the CCP says, do what the CCP says, eat what the CCP says. It's the price you pay when you live in a one party Dictatorial Monarchy.

You mean - world came to know more about stolen military secrets and reverse engineering them?

India media is a lot free, to the extent that it criticizes the people holding the highest offices in India and even the World. This is democracy.

If CPC really wants to disconnect Chinese from the world, the best thing to do is cutting off all the internet in China, forbidding people from learning English and travelling abroad.
Cutting off internet will harm CCP more than anyone else. They need the 50 cent army for propaganda. From time to time, they also need to hack in US's defence networks to steal military secrets.

China also would not ban people from learning English. How would you Chinese know what the world thinks of you if you do not know English. English is an eye opener.

Breaking new: A notorious Chinese forum member who goes by the name of BadGuy has been arrested and put in jail for sharing sensitive information like pictures of already existing Russian aircraft's now manufactured(copied) by China. His computer was confiscated and hard drive was destroyed. The hard drive also contained a large collection of Indian porn, which raises suspicions that he is a spy for India. Currently authorities are interrogating him(water boarded) in a cell.

First, CPC doesn't fear bond between PLA and Chinese people, every Chinese student goes through a military training instructed by real soldiers from PLA. Such kind of interactions creat more bond between us and PLA.

Second, even if CPC fears bond between PLA and the common people, CPC do not need to ban soldiers from interacting with people online, because no actual bond will happen on internet. The best example is this forum. We have been dealing with each other on internet on a daily basis, do you see any bond developed between us? On the contrary, it makes the relationship between Chinese netizens and Indian netizens worse, a lively exampleof that should be Chinese-Dragon on a Pakistan forum if anyone here knows about him.

Your conspiracy only displays nothing but what a twisted mind are you having.

There are lot of prices we are paying for living in an one-party China, but you mentioned none of them. All you have on your little mind is a handful of Chinese dissents as if they can represent 1.3 billion Chinese, what can I expect, they are what your little mind can hold.

And don't condescend to Chinese members on this forum as if we only get information from CPC, most Chinese members here are better informed about this world than you are. Your attempt to discredit our words by insinuating that we blindly believe in Chinese media as you blindly believe in Indian or western media, only shows your incompetence to conduct a decent argument.

Such insecure you are. Stop lecturing me by using personal attacks. I was talking about CCP, while you have taken it to a personal level for the second time. Refrain from doing so, or I will have to report you and your posts.
