China ahead in warship sprint

China will soon deploy its first aircraft carrier and it will be more advanced than anything India has or plans to get. Varyag – an Admiral Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier — is more advanced than the INS Viraat —vanguard of the Indian navy — and the still to be procured Admiral Gorshkov (INS Vikramaditya).

Sources from the Indian navy say that the Chinese plan to operationalise the Varyag - purchased as junk from Ukraine for 20 million US dollars in 1998.

In 2005, the dead ship was docked at the Chinese naval base in Dalian. Since then it has been undergoing sophisticated upgrades, reveal sources in the Indian navy.

Hindustan Times has access to photographs of the warship undergoing repairs at a dock in north- eastern China.

A senior officer from the Indian navy, who has been monitoring China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean, said that it will not be surprising to see the Chinese navy induct Varyag much before India procures and commissions Admiral Gorshkov.

He added that the induction of Varyag was certain as the Chinese had built a ski-jump (part of the aircraft carrier used for take off and landing of aircrafts) facility similar to that on the Varyag at it’s Yuanling airfield –— China’s main aviation test facility. The ski-jump is being used as a testing facility for modified Sukhoi-27 aircrafts, which the Varyag may carry.

“If Varyag was not to be inducted, the question of flight testing at a similar facility does not arise,” the officer observed.

According to sources, the Chinese have plans to get more aircraft carriers by 2020. Commander-in-chief of the Chinese navy, Wu Shengli’s aim to aggressively pursue indigenously built aircraft carriers has been a cause of worry for India.

Of the two other aircraft carriers being built by China, one is expected be inducted by 2015, added sources.

Its a floating piece of sh!t Singhji. (I remember that dialog from Stallone Movie "Lock Up" - "sh!t does float. :D)

For gods sake, how can something without an engine be better than the Viraat or the Gorshkov? Its just a freaking floating airstrip that needs tugs to move about.
As to their own carrier, they haven't even started. no keel laying, nothing. Squat. Zilch. Zero. Only propaganda.

I was watching a Chinese military programme a couple weeks ago and they were pawning off Admiral K. as their own operational carrier. :sarcastic:

This article is a meretricious piece of bogus rant, but it has its uses :D It is precisely how we kick our lackadaisical bureaucracy in the shins and get them to expedite the defence process. Interestingly, a recent article posted by Rajan on the whole China-India border fiasco hints at something very similar with respect to border construction:

Bogey Boogie

The Varyag was commissioned, stripped, sold and then stripped again. It has never had electronics, an engine, a rudder or for that matter even the most conventional operational systems. What's more, it was auctioned off to a private firm: the 'Chin Luck Holdings' Company, who despite Macau officials refusing to allow the ship to berth at its port, were allowed to purchase the boat. It's hull is in such poor condition that it would seem fortuitous for the PLAN to buy such a vessel. Nor does it represent technology that the Chinese do not have or could not acquire through design pilferage from the boat while in Russia itself.

Vladimir sir, Speaking of the Admiral Kuznetsov, do you have any info about the oil spill that happened near England/Ireland some months back, like how or why it happened? It was a serious diplomatic incident IIRC.

Can newspapers be so Careless in reporting? The Varyag is a damned useless piece of floating "thing"!!! There are no signs of the Chinese trying to convert or reconvert! Heck, even a 13 Year old who visits Forums knows that the Varyag is not operational and cannot be unless a miracle happens overnight! I suggest our journos visit DFI for a change and get some knowledge on Defence and Current Affairs!

It happened b/c Shipyard SRZ-35 doesn't have the necessary qualified personnel to service the boilers. The only incident I am aware of an oil slick was in 2005 off the coast of Norway. If there was another one, it is for the same reason. People at Sevmash are retarded.

I post some pics about this floating casino on the military photos, however the MOD was too sensitive and locked that thread. it looks like every one on this thread agrees with my comment on those pics, the MOD should really consider to unlock my tread

as I pointed out that they are dismantling the island and replace it with some presidential suits to attract rich gamblers, I really mean it

Not true Deb, the Chinese products that you see in India are cheap stuff. China does have the capacity for high tech manufacturing, they make processors, hard drives for computers. They make engineering products which are high precision. Their manufacturing capacity and quality far exceeds India. The weakness in Chinese systems are REAL R&D and Design abilities. India is not that great in real R&D, but probably marginally better than Chinese, who make it up with better copying abilities. The ONLY advantage Indians have is better ability in design. India better catch up in manufacturing abilities if we want to compete with China militarily.

agreed ,but everybody knows the quality of chineese weapons, they mainly concentrate on quantity not quality ,their main advantage is they want to cripple their enemy for greater no,they are good copier not inventor.
