Retired Lt. General Prakash Katoch talks to defence analyst D Raghunandan about the state of the armed forces under the current NDA government. From failure to implement the One Rank One Pension scheme to the opening of Cantonment Roads, they discuss the many ways in which a government, that prides itself on being nationalistic is destroying the armed forces, the very people they call their national heroes.

I don't agree with elitist mindset where they assume they are doing more than "civilians". They need to be continuously aware that they are part of us and they come from us.

Cantt were established outside of residential towns. In time they are now sitting in middle of bustling cities . It's neither good for city nor army.

Army must move cantts further away from cities and sell their land in cities to collect huge money and use that for modernization.

No one needs a cantt citing on prime urban land valued in crores per acre while army is starving for funds to modernize.

The bugger wants pensions to be benchmarked every year... BJP in its OROP does it every five years.. While I appreciate the service by the military. The military too needs to keep in mind that more than 1.3 lakh crore is being spent on pensions, when new government employees dont have such perks, and only have NPS. And we civilians in the private sector, have nothing when it comes to pensions...

These huge pension increases are directly undermining our military readiness by taking away money from the capital budget. Veterans also need to spare a thought to the defence of this country and not demand endless increases to pensions. The same people doing emotional atyachar about soldiers are leaving present soldiers underequipped and under funded.

Some ex-servicemen want their pension to be revised with the retirement of every officer, for example a retired full colonel's pension should be revised every time when a colonel retires, this is not possible, it would lead to huge pressure on the Defence Accounts Department in terms of calculating pensions of retired officers and other ranks. Mr Manohar Parrikar had agreed on revision of pensions every 5 years- this was finally implemented by the MoD as part of the OROP. I do not understand what more can the MoD, criticising the MoD for implementation of the present OROP is wrong.

The commanders-in-chief of the commands will report to the chief of defence staff (CDS) in his role as permanent chairman of the chiefs of staff committee (COSC),” said a second official, also speaking on the condition of anonymity.
So does this mean CDS gets command role?

Doesn't he already have a command role or is it only coordinating role ?
When CDS was announced, he was to only have a coordinating role, as an interface between the military and the political executive, and we were told he can't command (i.e. he doesn't sit above the service chiefs in the chain of command, and can't bark orders at them).

yup, noticed it. This is a lost in translation scenario.
CDS along with other chiefs need to institute a mechanism to avoid the temptation of communicating complex ideas on news channels live on air as first stop.

both people and journalists are not bright people, and media channels have social engineered people to believe that controversy is the only way to debate and discuss ideas.

Might as well make it mandatory that new ideas are first communicated via a controlled environment, and then take it live on air scrutiny at a later stage when people are familiar with the nuances of the topic.

It was more like foot in mouth moment for Gen B Raw again this is kept happening time and again this time on a very sensitive issues especially when Blue arm of tri service is putting maximum resistance to theatrisation of commands .

hope less discussion in public will be better for all 3 arms of armed forces until join theatre commands are achieved

I think the new law or code modification is addressing these temptations....with that said, should the CDS have a say in post retirement for a couple of years as an advisory to govt to make sure that new blood does not compromise the integrity of country aka US military these days? Its a double edged sword especially if retired CDS is not a good one...

He can't take any position for 3 years from his retirement day as CDS .
