Catalonia is an autonomous community of Spain, with the official status of a "nationality"

Catalan independence rally brings Barcelona to a standstill

Catalonia: a new European state' was the slogan for the march. But statehood remains a long way off, the EU warns. Photograph: Lluis Gene/AFP/Getty Images

Barcelona was a sea of red and yellow Catalan flags as more than 1.5 million people brought the city to a standstill on Tuesday at a mass rally called to demand independence for the Spanish region.

The planned route was already filled with demonstrators before the march began, in what marked a watershed for the hitherto marginal independence movement.

Catalan calls for independence have increased sharply since the financial crisis exploded in 2008, hitting Spain particularly hard

The movement is based largely on linguistic (and hence, cultural) identity. The modern state of Spain is largely the result of the union of two kingdoms, Castille and Aragon, in the 16th century. The Kingdom of Castille had grown to become the largest and most powerful state in Iberia following the campaigns against the Muslims (Reconquista), and in the process had absorbed many petty principalities. During the period of centralization that followed, the language of Castille (castellano, i.e. modern Spanish) was imposed on all the lands formerly part of these minor states. The process of cultural assimilation was mostly successful, but in some areas like Catalonia (formerly part of the Kingdom of Aragon) and the Basque Country (formerly the Kingdom of Navarre), strong regional identities had already existed and persisted in the face of centralized rule; among other things, this meant that local languages continued to be spoken, while they had died out elsewhere. These regional identities were sidelined from the 16th-18th centuries due to the immense wealth and prestige of the Spanish Colonial Empire, which benefited all of its European inhabitants, but after the collapse of Spain's colonial empire in the 19th century and subsequent economic difficulties, there was a resurgence in sub-nationalist sentiment.

So Civil war began in the USA (not give God!)
For us did nationalists in the USSR also put this question "Why rich Ukraine, must feed all other republics"? As a result of parade of the independent states, the USSR did not become and Ukraine from ten of the most front-rank economies moved to a 47 place.

Catalonia warns EU that million-strong march cannot be ignored

Leader of Spain's wealthiest region suggests separatist feeling could be dampened if Catalonia kept more of its taxes

The European Union must prepare itself for the breakup of countries within its frontiers, the regional prime minister of Catalonia warned on Thursday, adding that Madrid could not simply ignore a huge independence demonstration held in Barcelona this week.

Artur Mas said: "Europe will at some time have to think about this. It wouldn't make sense if, because of some rigid norms, it was unable to adapt to changing realities."

Next Germany will come apart, and Bismarck will turn over in his grave.
