The movement is based largely on linguistic (and hence, cultural) identity. The modern state of Spain is largely the result of the union of two kingdoms, Castille and Aragon, in the 16th century. The Kingdom of Castille had grown to become the largest and most powerful state in Iberia following the campaigns against the Muslims (Reconquista), and in the process had absorbed many petty principalities. During the period of centralization that followed, the language of Castille (castellano, i.e. modern Spanish) was imposed on all the lands formerly part of these minor states. The process of cultural assimilation was mostly successful, but in some areas like Catalonia (formerly part of the Kingdom of Aragon) and the Basque Country (formerly the Kingdom of Navarre), strong regional identities had already existed and persisted in the face of centralized rule; among other things, this meant that local languages continued to be spoken, while they had died out elsewhere. These regional identities were sidelined from the 16th-18th centuries due to the immense wealth and prestige of the Spanish Colonial Empire, which benefited all of its European inhabitants, but after the collapse of Spain's colonial empire in the 19th century and subsequent economic difficulties, there was a resurgence in sub-nationalist sentiment.Could anyone explain the history behind this movement ? Can't find convincing reasons on Wiki and online newpapers

The European Union must prepare itself for the breakup of countries within its frontiers, the regional prime minister of Catalonia warned on Thursday, adding that Madrid could not simply ignore a huge independence demonstration held in Barcelona this week.
Artur Mas said: "Europe will at some time have to think about this. It wouldn't make sense if, because of some rigid norms, it was unable to adapt to changing realities."
