What is the capacity of OFB's in production of ammunition for armed forces.
Recent news that army is shortage of ammunition only available for 20 days.

Why can't army have it's own ammunition plant like us had ATK for US army, they produce 140crore(1.4 Billion) rounds each year.

The OFB has the capacity.

It is the work ethos that causes all the slippages.

Efficiency, quality is the issue. A defence manufacturing company can't be just another PSU, but that's exactly how they are.

Any improvements to OFB in their current form is next to impossible. If we want to true transformation they have to be closed and reopened under new management strategy, if not all at least 50% of them.

Good question by opening poster. I also want to know the numbers. For example, how many 5.56 mm rounds can India produce annually? Same goes for artillery rounds. Any chart or graphic would be really helpful.

We might not have to be too concerned: http://zeenews.india.com/news/india...ia-is-safe-assures-rajnath-singh_1592432.html
Sir go for the CAG report, It almost have accurate info about numbers and Quality, It's damn 70 page long.. but a Good read in Travel time

Yes, I would be more worried about QC than capacity.

Don't mind my stating that I am surprised that you say we never had shortage in ammunition.

Of course, we have had and we are still having.

We have had shortages in arty, tank, specialised infantry weapon ammunition like the Sniper rifles and imported weaponry. Even in the Kargil War we were perilously close to exhausting our Bofor ammunition. When I was in AHQ, we had a slippages in Carl Gustavs and their ammunition.

What is 'rewinding'?

There is service ammunition and practice ammunition.

When the service ammunition is nearing the expiry date, it is converted into practice ammunition after the MARS inspection.

You cannot fire service ammunition since they are designated 'first line' and 'second line'.

Just out of curiosity, if I am willing to produce superior quality small arms and ammunition, will I be able to sell it to IA?

They are tendering and outsourcing ... the MoD mantra
There is nothing wrong with outsourcing from OFB, as long as it stays in country. They aren't outsourcing to China I hope.
