Can China really encircle India with its String of Pearls? The great game of Asia
China seems to have completed its String of Pearls around India with control over Gwadar port in Pakistan. A concerned India is doing its bit to counter this move by China.

Energy Futures in Asia: Final Report in 2004 made it popular.

The report said that China was working on a strategy to expand its influence in the Indian Ocean to extract maximum benefit from it and contain Indian hold in the region. China was expected to raise civilian and military infrastructure at chosen points on the islands or ports - metaphorically called pearls - surrounding India.

String of pearl, in geostrategic parlance, refers to the Strait of Malacca, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Maldives, the Strait of Hormuz and Somalia. It also includes Bangladesh and Myanmar in Chinese strategy.

STRAIT OF MALACCA

The Strait of Malacca connects Indian Ocean with Pacific Ocean with Malaysia and Singapore on one side while Indonesia on the other side. It is not very far from the Nicobar Islands.

The Strait of Malacca is key for China's energy requirements. About 80 per cent of its fuel from the Middle East passes through this. Wary of India's stronghold in the Indian Ocean, China has been consistently working to develop friendly and cooperative relations with the countries in the region.

In 1971, when China gave feelers about aligning with Pakistan during the Liberation War for Bangladesh, India had threatened to block the Strait of Malacca. Later in 1999 during Kargil war, India choked supply to Pakistan - practically blocking Karachi port - using its dominance in the Indian Ocean. China is on a mission to turn the tide against India.

MYANMAR AND BANGLADESH

China has developed assets in Myanmar. It has built a gas pipeline of about 2,400 km from Myanmar to China. It is also reported to have a military base in Coco Island of Myanmar.

China is said to have developed a naval base near Strait of Malacca on Cocos Keeling Island, which is a distant part of Australia.

Further north in the Bay of Bengal, China developed the port of Chittagong in Bangladesh. It has given China a foothold and stake in the Bay of Bengal. Significant part of Chinese trade passes through this port.

China had been pushing Bangladesh to allow it to develop a small naval base near Chittagong.

SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka has been a trusted friend of India for decades but the years between 2012 and 2014 saw increased Chinese presence in the island country.

China developed a port at Hambantola on the southeastern part of Sri Lanka. A Chinese company built the port and gained control to manage it.

China was in the process of developing it into a naval base, when in January 2015, the Rajapakshe government was voted out in Sri Lanka. The Sirisena government has had better equation with the Indian government and Chinese plans seem to have received a jolt.

PAKISTAN

China has Gwadar port and the CPEC to protect in Pakistan. The Gwadar port has gained further significance as China joined what was originally conceived as the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline.

India withdrew from the project as it was not assured of the security of the pipeline in certain stretches in Pakistan. The project is now called Iran-Pakistan-China pipeline. It touches Gwadar on its route to China.

The CPEC is developing into a vital geo-strategic and trade asset of China. At present, it carries only two per cent of its trade with Pakistan. But, China expects the volume to increase as it plans to route much of its trade with the Middle East and Africa through Gwadar port and the CPEC.

These two also gives China an alibi to strengthen its military prowess, with active collaboration of Pakistan, in the Indian Ocean particularly around the Strait of Harmuz, which is equally vital for India's international trade.

HOW INDIA COUNTERS CHINA

India has identified the challenge from China's String of Pearls strategy. India has made serious attempts to improve its relation with its maritime neighbours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recast India's Look East Policy as Act East Policy with emphasis on developing infrastructure in the East Asian countries. To counter Chinese influence in Myanmar, India has recently extended over USD 1.75 billion in grants and credit to Myanmar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangladesh and received his counterpart in New Delhi with an eye on China, which is reported to be developing some kind of deep sea military infrastructure at Sonadia. India has also promised USD 4.5 billion credit to Bangladesh only in April this year.

Indian government's increased engagement with Sri Lanka has ensured that the pace of Chinese 'economic intrusion', in the island neighbour has slowed down in the past two years.

Further, New Delhi has striven hard to counter Beijing's attempt to encircle India by launching a counter move to develop friendly relationship with the countries surrounding China.

India has invested a lot diplomatically and entered into multiple pacts with countries like Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia - all surrounding China. Besides, India has good old friends in Japan, South Korea and Russia.

Many suggest that China is concerned with growing Indian influence on all sides of its boundaries as its attempt to build a realistic String of Pearls is being talked about and countered openly, New Delhi's outreach has gone largely unnoticed by the world watchers.

If India can break the string at Sri Lanka, then String of Pearls will be useless...

The second map is totally wrong.
There are no Friends only mutual interests.

They listed Myanmar as friends, this is the same country that rented coco island to China against our objection.
Second one is Russia but they are no better than any prostitute's, they are in a dire need of a market and they will suck of anybody for it. China being a closest Market also factors in it.
Next are the 5 tan Nations in central asia they are too weak to do anything besides they benefit from OBOR why should they object, India doesn't do much for them Anyway.

Only ones I can bet on are Japan, South Korea, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Sri Lanka.

Tho there are many ways to counter SOP,
one of which is through Sri Lanka.
This country is desperate for investment which they are trying to bring from a country thousand miles away.
India being Sri Lankas closest neighbours can provide very efficient and permanent market. Sri Lanka Gov has invited India with open arms it just us who are hesitant.

Here are some of Sri Lankas goods that are Imported from China

http://wits.worldbank.org/CountryPr...adeFlow/Import/Partner/CHN/Product/All-Groups

We can provide them with Metal Electronics Machinery and textile more efficiently than China

Steps that should be undertaken to Set up investment in Sri Lanka
- negotiate a free trade zone
-build a bridge for trucking of heavy goods
-develpope a port on their land
-invite companies to set up factories
-increase mutual understanding as we are the hub of their majority religion Buddhism.

Too close for comfort: China to build port in Myanmar, 3rd in India’s vicinity

Oil and natural gas pipelines are already functioning between the fishing town of Kyaukpyu and Kunming in China’s Yunnan province, bordering Myanmar.

For Myanmar, the project promises employment to thousands and billions in tax revenue in the future, according to Chinese media. The deal took years to finalise because of differences on “…financing and other issues,” the tabloid Global Times said in report.

“At a ceremony in the Myanmar capital of Nay Pyi Taw, the Chinese consortium led by State-owned conglomerate Citic Group signed the framework agreement with the Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone Management Committee on the development of the deep-sea port,” the report said.

China will invest 70 per cent of the $1.3 billion while Myanmar will finance the rest in the initial phase, which will include two berths.

IT'S not a development, it's a debt trap.
There habantota or whatever it is called in sri lanka is LIKE working flawlessly.
That port is working way below it capacity.
I don't understand what a similar port will do to Burma.
It is only a pathway for more CHINESE submarines.

The disadvantage is that these countries will slow join the Chinese economic circles and become market of Chinese products. Once they become a part of Chinese economic circle, it will take India far more resources to take them out.

All Chinese economic projects come with millitary use as well. When neighbours are involved in Chinese debt trap, the Chinese will arm twist them to strengthen millitary presence in our neighbourhood. They did this to SriLanka. Pakis are already sold out. Other countries joining it will make life difficult for our millitary and strategic influence.

Don’t want sound anything like alarming and anything like that ... the trip of PM to Korea needs to be observed carefully ... security and also key people and factors. Especially others in and out of eam and more.

Also if two parties fight (like a civil war) sometimes it is for one to inform the other they are not weak. They are much more capable. Someone referred to Moses and Egypt. It’s fascinating to note others who might visit Bharat this month ... the declaration of such ... (even albeit the effort)

Mahadev is watching and now observing he is amongst us. The sides are clear. Choose carefully. (And this time it’s different)

Would prefer it if PM does the same by way of Video conference ...

We anyway downplay and are humble about our real role in such dynamics and have done the same countless times (remain in the shadows).

It would also be more useful to have the same message be delivered through a more appropriate method and say that same is on and around elections and pass it that can visit later to respect and collect the same. The PM has many more important things to play up.

Would also be moot to see what’s really behind this. PM is not whom I am worried about it’s the collateral damage to others. Especially within EAM. It’s a sense and smell of Takshent and LBS. near the elections cause and attempt and make the events post LBS similar like. What bunch of clowns this is not a circus anymore. perhaps the mindless don’t understand and understood the consequence last time and what we did and the return we gave to others. but it’s like a speed breaker is better? But what about the consequence to the aggressor... Also this time it’s different. We plan on playing it. Jai Hind.
