Whatta coincidence!!! We were just discussing yesterday!!
It’s crazy how India been one of the largest fabric makers and exporters still bought low Quality Camo fabric from China to make our uniform. What were the previous Indian Governments thinking? How can China a enemy state create uniform for our soldiers? At the start of the war what if China just cut off fabric supply what would soldiers wear? There will be a huge shortage of equipment.

This is the New Chinese Type 19 Starry Sky/XingKong Digital Camouflage. This will completely replace older Chinese Type 07 Digital Camo Uniforms and its multiple variants used by multiple branches of PLA. There will be five variants for this new Camo pattern The five color variants will be issued to all PLA personnel serving in the following environments: woodland (dark green), jungles (mid-green), desert (sand), tundra (dark tan), and urban (grey). This pattern itself is a mix of five different colour palettes and it’s very unique in its class.

Does anyone know the history behind the 3/4th pants worn in parades?

it seems to be unique to Indian forces.
whatever the historical reasons are, are the reasons still valid in 2020?

I think they are just there so that gaiters (called anklets in this video ) can stand out and pants look good. Gaiters on full pant can make pant look creased up. Also found this interesting fact https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puttee

Anyway they are ceremonial .
Its based on puttees worn by colonial armies of britain in ww1 but later replaced by modern dmr boots by www
Consequently , they are not worn in combat anymore but are retained in nonmilitary role like parades .
India is the origin of this type of clothing , and included british colonial armies all around .
So this thing even though a colonial vestige is completely indian .
