US government spends $ 682 billion dollars in defense budget. China ranks second ($166 billion dollars) followed by Russia($90 billion), UK($60 billion), Japan($59 billion), France($58 billion), Saudi Arabia ($56 billion). India ranks eight with $47 billion dollars.USAF has 223 C-17s?
Purely from a MBT transporter standpoint, C-130 and AN-32 cannot do it.even AN-124 running and maintenance cost is also not good either. Antonov has stopped AN-124 production 2 decades ago. they are using old ones with spares .its only fruitful if u use them commercially otherwise militarily they have no significance.
India dont need either C-5 or AN-124.
I think C-130 and C-17 along with Gajraj and few AN-32- will serve the purpose
So better develop railwaysPurely from a MBT transporter standpoint, C-130 and AN-32 cannot do it.
Il-76 could transport a single older T-72s, but with recent upgrades of the T-72, they wont be able to carry them any more.
That leaves only the C-17, with ability to carry a single MBT at a time only.
Hardly a quick response ability...
Delhi to Leh via railways? So better develop railways
Railways, Roads will definitely ease up pressure on logistics.Delhi to Leh via railways?
Kolkata to Changlang via railways?
Right IF and where they are feasible. Or else I fear there is no option but depend on air transport.Railways, Roads will definitely ease up pressure on logistics.
Can we afford dozen of these planes? We need dozens of C-17s and C130s. Both capable of landing on unpaved runways. We have ALGs all over where these can land.
While roads and railways are desirable, they are no immune to disruption both from nature as well as enemy. @bennedose's thread on Chini infra & its vulnerability is a pointer. If India can buy enough strat lifters it will be a great advantage over Chinis. Chinis to attack India will need multiple divisions while we have to land a few brigades in different zones to take care from defensive locations. India can disrupt Chini roads and rail link using air power or even our short range ballistic or cruise missiles. Supply lines won't be able to run smoothly. China too will then require air supplies. In the end it will boil down to dominating the air to make sure ground is supplied. India is well placed.
Well we have the cost of the planes already. Approx $200mil per pc. We will have 10 by next yr. target has to be capabilities to land multiple brigades at various points in the shortest possible time. We will need in diff combos, for carrying equipments including tanks, arty etc and troops. 134 fully equipped troops at a time. 30 sorties to land a brigade. Evaluate the requirements and make the order considering the long bordersCan we afford dozen of these planes?
Secondly what about choppers like Mi-17 ?
Roads and Railways serves dual purpose develops local economy during peacetime and allows mobilisation of troops fast during wars.
And yes I don't deny the need for roads as rails particularly for the local economy. Can we afford dozen of these planes?

+1. The C17s are specially built to carry American ground armoured vehicles, artillery and tanks. We use Russian-built equipment.Purely from a MBT transporter standpoint, C-130 and AN-32 cannot do it.

If chini can make in Tibet if goras can make till Darjeeling y can"t we?Delhi to Leh via railways?
Kolkata to Changlang via railways?
Tank and artillery are same does it make any difference ?? Does c-17 plane says no to indian and Russian tanks are not allowed??+1. The C17s are specially built to carry American ground armoured vehicles, artillery and tanks. We use Russian-built equipment.
Didn't someone just say that the C17 can carry only one Arjun at a time?Tank and artillery are same does it make any difference ?? Does c-17 plane says no to indian and Russian tanks are not allowed??
Yes. Payload capacity is 75 tons. Tanks weigh 60 tons. It can carry only one Abram.Didn't someone just say that the C17 can carry only one Arjun at a time?
Ohhh.....! I thought it were dimensions of the tank. LOLYes. Payload capacity is 75 tons. Tanks weigh 60 tons. It can carry only one Abram.
Definitely. But what about an emergency situation which would entail huge armour mobilization within 24Hrs?Railways, Roads will definitely ease up pressure on logistics.
Because GoI prefers to undertake projects, not finish them, pocket the money, and year on year keep on pouring more money in their pockets via the projects. If chini can make in Tibet if goras can make till Darjeeling y can"t we?
