The Hindu community in Arakan has been threatened with dire consequences if they fail to vote for the ANP during the elections.
ANP cadres visited different Hindu neighbourhoods of Maungdaw on the election eve and told Hindus that if they voted for NLD, their green cards will be taken away and they will be treated like Muslims.
Unlike much of Myanmar, support for the NLD is thin in northern Arakan where a hateful version of Buddhism describes Aung Saan Suu Kyi and her colleagues as pro Muslim.
As Rohingya Muslims are barred from voting, the prospects for aa NLD victory in these parts is low. Under such circumstances, NLD had counted on the Hindu minority to provide some balance in the area.
But ANP cadres are saying that if there are high numbers of NLD votes in the centres, they would assume the Hindus had done it. In response they will seize the identity cards of Hindus and restrict all their movements as they had done with the Muslims.
The Hindus will also be considered as enemies, similar to Muslims, ANP cadres have warned.
