They lost against the Americans. You didn't see Britain ruling France or Germany or Europe. India had way more people and soldiers than Europe ever did and India did have muskets and cannon technology at that time and yet India lost against the British.
Well Americans are basically Britishers who revolted against British government..
Britain did occupy France (Normandy region and held it for long time )
British also occupied Germany after second world war
Fun fact..there are only 32 countries around the globe which did not came under British rule and Germany and France do not feature in them ..

Well Wiki says that the British won the battle with basically the size one third of the Maratha forces arrayed against the British. If the Marathas Empire was so big how did the British defeat the Marathas so easily and with far fewer troops than the Marathas?
Brits had help of Mahars, who helped bris because had grudge against peshvas for discriminating them, when Maraths esp Shivaji didnt.

Imagine this , an army pf 5000 men, well drilled and trained fighting for a national flag , for the king and the country .
Highly motivated to destroy the supposed savages, getting regular salary pension etc , and other benefits. ,yep that's a standing army Vs a horde of rag tag bhaade ke fayter who have no loyalty whatsoever.
I urge you to read a book called mughal empire at war .
Read it whole and you shall realise as to why brits captured all of india very very easily .

Maratha empire was not there it was peshwa of Pune.
Had brits faced the army of marathas of 1770s and 1780s they would have been slaughtered as European trained troops of mahadji schindia would have faced the brits ,key word is scindia by the tike this battle took place scindia were a brit ally

Because British was tactically brilliant ..They also defeated French , Portuguese and Dutch in India along with Indigenous tribes and chiefs..
They produced amazing commanders like
Robert Clive , Warren Hastings and Arthur Wellsely .
You are looking at a generation of commanders who defeated mostly every tribe and civilization they fought against.
Britain won india because they had most powerful navy of that time.
Britain can bring out resources from any World.
Through their navy they can easily supply british troops with arms and ammunition.

Britain had bases all around the world.

War is all about supply line. Cutting off enemy supply ine is everything in war and Britain had supply line was shattered all around the world

You have got your history mixed up.

The British never occupied Normandy unless you consider the Allied Invasion with the US army or you consider the English as British. Fact is Britain was conquered by the Romans, the Vikings and later the Normano-French.

On the other hand the Franco Norman Dukes and French counts occupied England for a long time. For more than 300 years French was the Royal language of the English court. You can even look up how the Englishry law demarcated the noble Franco Norman class and the common English peasantry. The French have left an indelible mark on the British isles be it in the castles they built or the effect on the English language. 29% - 40 % of English words come from the French. Today most English names and surnames come from French. Heck even Winston Churchill`s surname Churchill came from the French word Courcelle. All of this was due to the Norman conquest of England by William the Conqueror which is described in the Bayeux Tapestry where the Normans are called as Francii and the English as Anglii.

Also do you notice how the word "Frankly" in English language even today means being truthful and sincere.

The colonial French did perform poorly against England but that is a different story.

Anyway here is a picture of the British passport which still bears the French phrase "Dieu Et Mon Droit"

Honestly the Marathas could have dislodged the British out of India if not for the bickering and constant squabbles between the Peshwas , the Holkars and the Scindias. Also there should have been a pan Indian alliance between the Marathas , the Rajputs , the Sikh Empire and the NE kingdoms. The British took each kingdom out piecemeal and employed the age old tactic of Divide and Conquer to establish paramountcy in India.

Look at China and see how they managed to remain somewhat independent albeit with massive concessions and unequal treaties with the European powers. Thailand and Japan are also good examples of how a centralized monarchy could have escaped colonialism. Anyway that is water under the bridge and I hope we can regain our former glory in the world stage.

Firstly they probably needed to rapidly modernize... British would have eventually come out on top by recruiting more & more Indians & setting up local alliances. Indians were more or less fed up with Monarchy & well the North West was tired of frequent invasions & lack of security was humongous.
Marathas alone wouldn't have done jack... But could have delayed the inevitable. They came up short against a better & more prepared enemy. Nothing shameful about it.
