Breaking News: Plane strays in to Indian Space. Force landed in Mumbai. Some Channels report it as a US plane. NDTV claims it may be Russian too. IS IT A SPY PLANE? The Plane has AN124 written. The An-124 was manufactured in parallel by two plants: the Russian company Aviastar-SP and by the Kyiv Aviation Plant AVIANT, in Ukraine. Series production ceased with the break up of the Soviet Union.

Timesnow reports it is a AN32 plane and an USA plane. It is expected to land in one hour time in Mumbai says CNN-IBN. While NDTV and Timesnow claim it has force landed in Mumbai. The Antonov An-32 is a twin-engined turboprop military transport aircraft. And this is also a Russian make. So what is this US angle? Something fishy?

The NDTV reporter presented the news as if she saw the marking AN124 in the plane.

Whose plane it could be? China or Pakistan?

Plane belongs to Volga-Dnepr Airlines. The aircraft entered Indian airspace without authorisation and the pilot appeared to be incoherent.

Kudos to IAF for such quick action.

Agreed with Singhji, there is conflicting report that Plane registered with US company but authorities found Russian marking Volga-Dnepr on it.

However kudos to IAF for quick action.

at 9:55pm ATC noticed a plane coming from pak. the atc contacted the plane, the pilot said its an american plane carrying american cargo.. at 10:05pm ATC asked for code clearance for entering indian airspace, the pilot said he had none.. then ATC alerted IAF.. and IAF pressed into service, the plane was found to be a russian made craft with russian markings and so was escorted to mumbai airport. and then taken to an empty bay in the mumbai airport.. and where currently cisf has sorrounded the plane, and a check of cargo hold is being initiated.

Russian military plane violates Indian airspace
19 Jun 2009, 2337 hrs IST, PTI

MUMBAI: A Russian military cargo aircraft AN-24 on Friday night intruded into Indian airspace from Pakistan and landed at the international airport out.

As the plane entered into Indian airspace without the right code, it was escorted to Mumbai airport by Indian Air Force planes, a spokesman of Mumbai International Airport Limited spokesman said here.

The MIAL spokesman said the plane with Russian markings came from Pakistani airspace and was escorted over the Mumbai airport by IAF planes.

The cargo aircraft landed at the airport at around 2240 hours after being allowed by the Air Traffic Control.

Security forces have surrounded the aircraft.

Thanks IG for posting the report but as per visual provided by TimesNow the Aircraft stands out to be an AN-124.

at least someone is wide awake to the threats that the country faces, we were caught napping when 26/11 happened but this time round atc was prompt enough to put an alert across to iaf and the force was ever ready to counter the threat. this argues well for india being prepared to any sort of threats emerging from air but i would be interested on the complete time line that was followed during the whole episode which would give us a glimpse on the swiftness with which the whole episode was tackled but then looking at the security scenario all such details i guess need to kept as a secret. a thing that catches my attention is that this plane was first seen and contacted at 9:55pm and it took some 10 minutes for the atc to inquire about the code clearance for entering indian air space, which means effectively this plane was allowed to go unchecked for some 10minutes in the indian airspace, is this a normal procedure, i am no expert in the field and even otherwise my knowledge on the subject is rather limited but as a lay person this does come across as a cause of concern given the fact that parulia airdrop has not fadded off my memory. still having said all that i have, its a thumbs up to the concerned atc officials and the iaf, job well done guys.

What also remains to be seen is during the time taken bybthe IAF to intercept the plane, did it have any deadly cargo that it might have off loaded?

US-hired aircraft flouts airspace, forced to land - India - The Times of India

US-hired aircraft flouts airspace, forced to land
20 Jun 2009, 0125 hrs IST, TNN

MUMBAI: In a major violation of Indian airspace, a Russian aircraft hired by the US military which was overflying India on Friday evening was instructed by the defence ministry to change its flight path mid-way and head for Mumbai airport.

The Antonov 124, which intelligence sources said had 18 Russians on board, was on its way from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean — where the US has a base — to Kandahar in south Afghanistan when it was intercepted by Mumbai ATF on orders from the defence ministry. The defence ministry’s public relations official, Captain M Nambiar, confirmed that a foreign aircraft was instructed to divert to Mumbai airport. "There has been a violation of our airspace by a civilian aircraft," he said. However, he denied that any IAF aircraft had escorted the US aircraft even as sources maintained that two IAF jets had indeed escorted the aircraft to Mumbai airport.

"An aircraft belonging to the US defence landed in Mumbai airport at 10.35 pm," said M G Junghare, general manager of Mumbai airport. The Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson also confirmed the development, saying the aircraft was temporarily parked near runway 14.

According to the sources, the aircraft while seeking permission from the defence ministry to fly over Indian airspace had identified itself as a civil aircraft doing a non-scheduled (charter) operation. All foreign aircraft doing non-scheduled or defence flights are required to submit their flight plans to obtain permission from Indian authorities to overfly Indian airspace.

"This aircraft had asked for the status of a non-scheduled aircraft and it flew over Indian flight information region as such. But to enter Pakistani airspace, it identified itself as a defence aircraft. It was still in Indian territory when this happened. The ambiguous status of the aircraft forced the defence ministry to issue orders to divert it to Mumbai," said the source.

One news is reporting it as a "defence" aircraft, other as civilian. Talk about reporting bullshit before getting any facts at all.

I agree 10 minutes is a long time but I'm sure India's radar's knew it was a transport and not a Pakistan F-16. I give it a thumbs up as well.

There are some reports which suggests that the plane landed on it's own without IAF escort, while others say it was escorted.
Reports say it was an American chartered flight from Diego Garcia. Wonder why the US had to charter a Russian plane.
The mystery will probably remain just that as it involves the Russians and Americans. We might have everything covered up.
