Brazil Wants to Buy Russian Anti-Aircraft Weaponry – Defense Ministry

Brazil's Defense Ministry intends to discuss purchasing air defense systems from Russia during talks with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev later this month, the ministry said on Sunday.

"We are interested in acquiring three batteries of Pantsir-S1 missiles and two batteries of Igla missiles," General Jose Carlos De Nardi, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces, said in a statement.

The possible purchase of Russian anti-aircraft weaponry will be discussed during Medvedev's visit to Brazil scheduled for the end of February, De Nardi said.

An agreement, if signed, would envisage the construction of a factory in Brazil and the transfer of technologies, he said.

The Pantsir-S, produced by Russia's KBP, is a gun-missile system combining a wheeled vehicle mounting a fire-control radar and electro-optical sensor, two 30-mm cannons and up to 12 57E6 radio-command guided short-range missiles, and is designed to take on a variety of targets flying at low altitudes.

The Pantsir can engage targets up to 20 km (12 miles) by missiles and 4 km (2.5 miles) using cannons, KBP claims.

The export version of the system, Pantsir-S1, has been sold to the United Arab Emirates, Syria and Algeria.

The Igla is a Russian man-portable infrared homing surface-to-air missile.

When I read the title, I was thinking more in the S-300 region.

S-300 out of production though its still a potent weapon platform.

Would have been great if we had gone for licence production.

Very basic stuff here. Nothing shows they are arming themselves, only replacing old stuff. Even their MRCA deal seems to be in a bad position.

Anyway, the Brazilians are arming Pakistan with missiles.

They have already imported ARMs and may be thinking of importing WVR missiles for the JF-17, called A Darter. Supposedly a Python IV equivalent with over the shoulder capability.

OK, but hope the old stuff isn't going to groups like FARC.

Panstyr is a solid point defence system... it should protect their Rafale base well. :thumb:

Russia antiaircraft missiles does not seem to be doing Syria much good. If Syria was transporting missiles you would have though they would have some ready to use when Israel attack their convoy this past week.

What you think and what they do are not necessarily the same.

Air strike on Damascus military complex shows Syrian Air Defense can do nothing against Israeli Electronic WarfareFebruary 1, 2013

The Israeli air strike on a weapons convoy and military complex near Damascus, on the night between Jan. 29 and 30 has something in common with a similar air strike, the Israeli Air Force launched in 2007: the bombers entered and egressed the Syrian airspace almost completely undetected by the Syrian air defenses.

On Sept. 6, 2007, ten F-15I and F-16 jets attacked a nuclear facility being built in Syria. The success of that mission, dubbed "Operation Orchard", was largely attributed to effectiveness of the Israeli Electronic Warfare platforms that supported the air strike and made the Syrian radars blind: some sources believe that Operation Orchard saw the baptism of fire of the Suter airborne network system against Syrian radar systems from some ELINT aircraft.

It is quite likely that Israel's EW capabilities, most probably furtherly improved since 2007 (someone speculated Israel is capable to inject malware from its F-16s), have played a major role in the recent strike that hit a target located only 5 kilometers from Assad's headquarters.

The fact Israeli fighters had to ingress over Turkish airspace tells us something... they were avoiding the SAM wall directed against them. They picked the weakest spot of Syria's air defence and made their move at tree top level. Nothing Syria had then in that flight path could deal with it. Panstyr is protecting high value targets, not convoys destined for Hezbollah.

So thats the problem Israeli did not fight fair, and picked a weak spot in Syria air defenses at tree top level,,,:pm::rofl:

I am sure they will fight more fair the next time.

F35 and the Suter airborne network systems are going to be great friends.

Yes, it is called tactics. They don't teach that in www.iamaverageamerican.com.

Go figure out why the Israelis are still panicky about Iran getting S-300s from Russia.

The following image comes from 2010"²s survey of the Syrian SAM deployment, published on the interesting Sean O'Connor's IMINT & Analysis blog.

Although probably outdated, it still gives an idea of how crowded of SAM systems the area surrounding Damascus is.In June 2012, a Syrian anti-aircraft artillery battery downed a Turkish Air Force RF-4E Phantom that had violated the Syrian airspace at low altitude over the Mediterranean Sea, thus proving that Damascus's air defense are still somehow dreadful for enemy fighter jets.

UP TO June 201 Their SAMS are Still up

That seems to be a bad link. :)
That's not a link at all.

average american posts propaganda BS or heavily biased information from websites that are not taken seriously by anybody, like strategypage.com.

So, I gave him a URL for himself.

It simply reads www. i am average american .com.
