And Duterte is the best thing that happened to China.
Well, he's trying to make amends, isn't it? Though a little too late when you have lost a few islands already to the Chinese trawlers. Duterte was of the thought that China would accept you guys if you just simped around them; make no mistake - the current opposition in India also has a class of people (other than outright traitors) who think the same.

Being an island country, you guys need to concentrate on getting 3 main things:

1) A deadly anti-ship missile force mixing short and medium range anti-ship missiles
2) Drones that not only monitor but can also drop the stuff that goes BOOM (hate to admit it but Bayraktar TB2 or Akinci from Turkey makes a nice option, since we don't have our domestic platform ready yet)
3) An air defence system that can turn PLAAF/NAF pilots into fish food. Israeli Arrow 3, Indo-Israeli Barak 8, Indian Akash-NG, French Aster, etc, are good options.

Buying F-16s or Gripens at this point, unless you are buying at least 5-6 squadrons, is not sensible. 36 Gripens/F-16s won't do much damage - not to mention the time it will take your pilots to gain expertise in mastering the jets compared to PLAAF/NAF that have a lot more experience flying J-15s & JH-7s.

You have limited resources and have to concentrate on a brutal defensive position in order to screw the Paper Dragon.

China will always attack disproportionately to gain a psychological advantage. The key is to show them that you are willing to kill their troops at any cost. Once their pilots and sailors drop like flies in a few clashes, you will have enough time till the US Navy can send support and the world can limit China through economic/political means.

You need that time to steal a favorably negotiated deal.

BrahMos for the Philippines. That is indeed a powerful weapon. Thing is, when you are very weak is it better to try and arm yourself, stay neutral or play dead?

Re: Duterte
Duterte is one of those brutal ironfist nationalist types who try to tighten control and obtain weapons out of the belief/wish that turbulent times are coming. They hope to play savior and protector of the unwashed masses. Does that make him a traitor? At first the Germans loved Hitler.

Re: China/Philippines relations
Didn't the CCP's Lee Bo say something along the line that, "Chinese abroad are first and foremost Chinese citizens?"

What makes a male Chinese, Chinese? Is it being born in China? Having ancestors from China? Belonging to ydna haplogroup O? O-M122?
Seems kind of like how Hitler thought with his idea of a homeland for Germans.

Perhaps the intent is that the CCP will eventually consider certain or all Filipino men to be Chinese citizens. They will say, the Philippines was "discovered" by Chinese fishermen. Much akin to the Spanish/Portuguese in the New World or Greeks in what the Greeks called "Europe". For certain folk, original inhabitants are just in way. That kind of thinking could lead the CCP to claiming a whole wack of territory.

Just tossing ideas out there.

Duterte is in damage control mode. He let Philippines slide too much with the CCP. Now, their islands are occupied or on the verge of it, and they have nothing to defend themselves with. On top of that, the pandemic has screwed their chances of bigger growth.

Now asking the US to come back, setting up bases and modernizing is a bit late, but better to do it now than never.

CCP is a weird combination of Mao's China mixed with Imperial Japan & Nazi Germany. Their worldview is very 19th century at best despite their advancement in all fields.

Their ideas of racial identity, linguistic affinity, as well as their preference for vassals over allies as an emerging superpower all reflect their mindset being frozen in time.

You won't believe how many Xibots on another forum have tried to "convince me" about how my folks are better off joining China than remaining Indians. Just because we have oriental features.

Sounds crazy, but yeah... that happened.

Well, you simply over-estimate Phillipine's influence or power within the region. When USA refused to have Phillipine's back in the conflict, what you expect him to do. Unless USA decides to get herself into a new cold-war with China, the next phillipine president will be almost the same as him.

is it legit?
Yes it is, their Army also wanted a few batteries of BrahMos, their navy wanted Shore based batteries.

For the record, the Philippines have shown interest in the purchase of the BrahMos since 2016. It was reported that negotiations were underway since 2019 regarding the procurement of two mobile batteries for the Philippine army under the Land-Based Missile System (LBMS) program. A mock-up of the Philippine army version of the launcher was shown. The missiles were fitted on a semi-trailer towed by a South Korean KIA KM500 truck. In addition, in the spring of 2020, there were reports of the Philippine Navy’s intention to purchase three batteries of the BrahMos system. However, in early December 2020, the Philippine government decided to postpone the plan, for financial reasons (linked to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic).
This was showcased in Philippines
Apparently its what their army wanted.

Fry some Chinkas..Batsoup in dinner
If only we had Nirbhays operational and in sufficient numbers to offer them! The Filipinos won't be lobbing $500K costing missiles on trawler boats hired by the CCP. Nirbhays would have allowed them to actively take out the rogue trawlers as they would cost far less.

BrahMos will be most likely reserved for PLAN ships if they got too close to the coast and a sort of eventuality.

I somehow see this as a very positive development for India. We may have finally opened up a new front against China.

Now time is ripe to supply Brahmos to Vietnam but it won't be easy because Chinese have invested quite a bit in Vietnam.

Philippines may lose very little if manages to put a couple of PLAN vessels out of action.

It will legitimize the struggle in SCS.

US and China have been giving rough reach arounds to each other in the region for a long time now.

If there is anyone who will pull the trigger against China first, my bet is on Philippines.
