DRDO to test-fire BrahMos II on Wednesday

New Delhi: After failing to hit the target in the previous test, DRDO is planning to test-fire the Block II version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile on March 4.

"We are planning to conduct the second test of the BrahMos Block II version at the Army's test range in Pokharan on March 4 this week," Defence Ministry officials said here.

The earlier test of the Indo-Russian joint venture missile was carried out on January 20 where it took off successfully but deviated from its path and landed far away from its target.

Speaking about the earlier problems with the missile, officials claimed that there was a "small defect" in the software of the homing device of the missile, which they claimed to have rectified for the test this week.

Officials claimed that the technology in the Block II missiles was "unparallelled" and would help them hit even "insignificant targets" hidden in cluster of buildings.

Good news the problem was not anything with the missile but rather with the software, if it was anything else the missile would not be retested so fast.

The point we should note that it is a complete LACM variant as compared to Block 1 where it has limited LACM capability.

Hypersonic Brahmos II to be ready by 2013 news

CHENNAI: Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Controller of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), said that the Brahmos Aerospace is working on hypersonic missile project, Brahmos II, which is expected to be ready by 2013.

Talking on the sidelines after inaugurating a combat vehicles and engineering exhibition, organised as part of the DRDO’s golden jubilee celebrations, Pillai, who is also the CEO and the managing director of Brahmos Aerospace, Thiruvavanthapuram, said that the missile will have a speed between Mach 5 and Mach 7. He also claimed that the Brahmos cruise missile at Mach 2.8 is the fastest in the world.

Asked about the failure of the Brahmos missile’s land attack version, which was tested some time ago, he said the reasons for the failures have been identified and efforts on rectifying the “problem with the software” was on.

He revealed that work on the development of a universal missile launcher has started at the Brahmos Aerospace in Thiruvananthapuram.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the Exhibition, Sivathanu Pillai, while explaining the changing dimensions of war theatre, said that the future wars would be fought with minimum people, but with maximum weapons. “It will be network centric and will be fought with intelligent and autonomous systems,” he said, adding that the “cyber warfare and robotic systems will dominate the battlefield.” Pillai, who began his career with ISRO, said nanotechnology and biotechnology would change the perspective of future wars. “The Bio- Nano revolution will change every applications in the battlefield,” he said.

Sivathanu Pillai said the development of precision robotic systems and manipulators will help to use it in nuclear reactors and in heath care systems also.

The BrahMos chief executive said Helium 3 gas, available in Moon, could become the future energy source for the world.

Build It Right, And They Will Come

he Indian Army is refusing to buy any more BrahMos cruise missiles until the system has proved, via realistic testing, that it can do what it was designed to do. The army version of BrahMos failed its first operational test recently. While the Indian Navy is happy with the performance of its version of the missile (which is used to destroy enemy warships), the army version is equipped with a different terminal guidance system, that is supposed to enable the missile to hit a target in a cluttered environment. This is basically a video camera which broadcasts back to an operator images of what the missile is headed for. This is so minor adjustments can be made, to insure that the right, say, building can be hit. In addition to getting that new guidance seeker working, the army is also concerned with the high cost of each missile (over $2 million).

The Indian Army BrahMos is fired from a truck mounted launcher, and during the test, missed its target some 200 kilometers distant. The missile was accepted for service in the Indian Navy three years ago, but the first operational test of the army version was delayed as engineers fussed over technical issues. The missile had performed well in development tests. But an operational test means the missile is issued to a combat unit, and fired by a military crew. Russia has had problems like this before, as have all countries. But Russia has had more problems with high tech weapons, like BrahMos, than Western nations.

Last year, India ordered 800 more of the new PJ-10 BrahMos missiles. The Indian Army had planned to buy 80 launchers as well. Russia has not yet ordered any BrahMos, while India is also working on lighter versions for use by aircraft and submarines.

The 3.2 ton BrahMos has a range of 300 kilometers and a 660 pound warhead. Perhaps the most striking characteristic is its high speed, literally faster (at up to 3,000 feet per second) than a rifle bullet. Guidance is GPS or inertial to reach the general area of the target (usually a ship or other small target), then radar (in the navy version) that will identify the specific target and hit it. The warhead weighs 660 pounds, and the high speed at impact causes additional damage (because of the weight of the entire missile.)

India and Russia developed the weapon together, and now offer the BrahMos for export. The high price of each missile, about $2.3 million, restricts the number of countries that can afford it. Different versions of the PJ-10 can be fired from aircraft, ships, ground launchers or submarines. The maximum speed of 3,000 kilometers an hour makes it harder to intercept, and means it takes five minutes or less to reach its target. The air launched version weighs 2.5 tons, the others, three tons or more.

The 29 foot long, 670mm diameter missile is an upgraded version of the Russian SS-NX-26 (Yakhont) anti-ship missile, which was in development when the Cold War ended in 1991. Lacking money to finish development and begin production, the Russian manufacturer made a deal with India to finish the job. India put up most of the $240 million needed to finally complete two decades of development. The PJ-10 is also being built in Russia. Efforts are being made to export up to 2,000. China and Iran have also expressed interest in the weapon, but only Malaysia, Chile, South Africa, Kuwait and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) have been approached with a sales pitch. Russia and India are encouraged enough to invest in BrahMos 2, which will use a scramjet, instead of a ramjet, in the second stage. This would double speed, and make the missile much more difficult to defend against.

The large order from India indicates it plans to make the missile a major weapon system. The BrahMos can carry a nuclear warhead, but is designed mainly to go after high value targets that require a large warhead and great accuracy. The BrahMos could take out enemy headquarters, or key weapons systems (especially those employing electronic or nuclear weapons.)

India successfully test fires BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

NEW DELHI, March 4 (RIA Novosti) - India has successfully tested the latest land attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile at a firing range in Pokhran in the Rajasthan Desert, a source in the Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

The source said that the weapon was fired in a vertical-launch configuration and the missile had successfully hit its designated target.

Officials at India's Defense Research and Development Organization, who has developed the missile together with Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia, were cited by The Times of India daily as saying it "took two and a half minutes to strike its target at the Pokhran firing range in Rajastahan."

The first successful test launch of the supersonic cruise missile from a vertical launcher was conducted last December from a mobile platform in the Bay of Bengal. All previous missile launches were carried out from inclined launchers.

The BrahMos missile has a range of 290 km (180 miles) and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg (660 lbs). It can effectively engage ground targets from an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and has a top speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the U.S.-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

The last test launch of the BrahMos land attack version was carried out in January at the Pokhran firing range, but the missile failed to hit the target, flew off course and later self-destructed.

Analysts estimate that India could purchase up to 1,000 BrahMos missiles for its armed forces in the next decade, and export 2,000 to other countries during the same period.

During a recent visit by Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov to India, the two sides agreed to develop a hypersonic version of the missile to be known as BrahMos-2.

Ahmed it is already inducted, by IN and IA. The point to be noted is that it is an anti ship missile which is modified for LACM role. It is being made advanced for getting more potent in land attack mode. IN has no issues what so ever with this missile.

Yes, I know, the IN has been thoroughly happy with it and I am sure, IA will be happy too. Read that IAF will get Brahmos by 2012.

India Test-Fires New Version Of BrahMos Missile

Wednesday, India test-fired a new version of the 290 km-range supersonic cruise missile BrahMos at Pokharan in the desert of the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan bordering Pakistan, media reports say.

The successful test came after an earlier one January 20 of the Indo-Russian joint venture missile failed, following a deviation of the missile from its course mid-way and missing the target. The failure was pinpointed to a "defect" in the software of the homing device of the missile.

"The Block II BrahMos missile was successfully launched at 1030 hours today," officials of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), who have developed the weapons system in collaboration with Russian scientists, told reporters.

The missile "took two-and-a-half minutes to strike the target in the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan," they said, adding the analysis of the parameters of the missile flight would take some time.

The test launch was witnessed by Deputy Army Chief (Planning and Systems) of Staff, three-star General M S Dadwal, among others. The latest land attack version of the missile has been developed for the Army, and the weapon was fired in a vertical-launch configuration, the officials said. The name of the missile is a mixture of 'Brahmaputra', a perenenial river flowing in Eastern India and Bangladesh, and 'Moscow'.

The officials said the "unique" technology in the Block II BrahMos version made the missile an "unparalleled" one, giving the armed forces the ability to hit targets in building clusters. The missile carries a 300-kg conventional warhead and can achieve speeds of up to 2.8 Mach or nearly three times the speed of sound.

"The new seeker system is unique and it will help us to hit the targets, which may be insignificant in terms of size, in a cluster of large buildings. We are the only nation having this advanced technology," they claimed.

The officials said that the Army, which had already armed one regiment with the Block I version of the missile, will start receiving deliveries of the 240 missiles ordered by it in two years as per the original schedule.
