US does not use it in any existing missile - the difficulty is in using mid-course updates for guiding such fast missiles. Russia has perfected both this propulsion and guidance tech.

US did have Talos missiles earlier, but they could not overcome these problems and hence switched to Harpoon.

GQM 163A is a target practice missile lacking guidance and uses solid fuelled air augmented ducted ram-rocket like Meteor.

HF-3 has liquid ramjet engine.

So, yes other countries have developed the technology, though Russia remains the leader.

The speeds of the BrahMos missile will be upgraded from existing supersonic to hypersonic with superior destructive capabilities in a phased manner within a decade, a top official said here on Tuesday.

"Presently, the BrahMos has a speed of 2.8 Mach... in two years time it would be increased to 3.5 Mach, and by five five years, it would be 5 Mach," said BrahMos Aerospace Pvt.Ltd. (BAPL) Managing Director & CEO Sudhir Kumar Mishra.

Thereafter, to go to hypersonic mode, it is likely to take another seven-ten years as the missiles would graduate from ramjet to scramjet engine, and considering other complex issues of aerodynamic heating, combustion, vibrations, etc, he said.


Mishra was speaking at a function to mark Godrej Aerospace Ltd's handing over of the 100th set of airframe assemblies to BAPL, and bagging another order to produce 100 more units of airframes of the Air Launched version of the missile and launch of its production.

"Making the BrahMos missiles itself was a challenge and we have done ita and we shall upgrade as per the needs," said Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Jamshyd N. Godrej.


Mishra also said that the hypersonic BrahMos missiles would change the scenario as it would have immense destructive power besides in increased speed.

Besides, the Missile Technology Control Regime (MRCR) regime have allowed India to trade in high-end missile technology and enhance its JVs with Russia.

To a question whether India was considering exports of BrahMos to friendly nations, he said there is a set of users (Indian armed forces) with which the company is working, but the issue of exports would be decided at the government levels.

In its current supersonic avatar, the BrahMos cruise missiles has a flight range of upto 290 kms and it can be armed with a conventional 200-300 kgwarhead.

It can cruise at altitudes of 10 metres above ground or as high as 15 kms maintaining supersonic speeds of more than a km per second throughout the flight duration.

As a "fire and forget" stealth universal supersonic missile, once it is launched, it doesn't need any further guidance from a control centre.

It is versatile enough to be fired from land-based platforms, submarines, and ships like the Talwar Class, Rajput Class and Sukhoi aircraft, for precision strikes to destroy targets on land and sea.

Godrej Aerospace has been associated with the BrahMos missiles program since inception in 2001, manufacturing most of the metallic sub-systems in it, the main airframe, control surfaces and nose cap, besides Mobile Autonomous Launchers and Missile Replenishing Vehicles for the land launched versions.

The first successful BrahMos was launched on June 12, 2001 from a terrestrial launched at an interim test range off Chandipur cost in Odisha.

Presently BRAHMOS is the only supersonic cruise missile in service. Effort is on in a number of countries to achieve supersonic speeds and parallel work is going on for hypersonic cruise missiles as well. BrahMos, India and Russia’s Joint Venture, is also moving ahead with its hypersonic version BRAHMOS-II which will have a scramjet engine in place of ramjet. As a variation of the ramjet, scramjets allow combustion to occur in a supersonic airflow, thereby expanding the operating range above 4 Mach.

The hypersonic weapon’s immense destructive power will result from kinetic energy. An object striking a target at 6 Mach will generate 36 times the force of an object of the same mass striking the target at 1 Mach. This phenomenon makes hypersonic weapons well suited to attacking hardened or deeply buried targets such as bunkers or nuclear and biological-weapon storage facilities.

India has developed specialty aluminum alloys to drastically cut BrahMos cost

India has developed its own specialty aluminum alloy that is being used to construct critical parts of the BhraMos missile — the world's first and only supersonic cruise missile. The state-own Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) locally developed the alloy that was earlier imported from Russia. This reported by Sputnik.

This is crucial to the development and capacity enhancement of the BhraMos missile, as the manufacturers hope to make substantial cost savings with the locally developed alloy that is being used for the construction of the fuel tank and airframe of the missile.

"The series production of aluminum alloy intensive F3 section, i.e., the major load bearing section of the BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile, using indigenous materials has begun at a fabrication plant in Mumbai. The indigenous production of aluminum alloys has resulted in substantial cost savings," a DRDO official said.

"A majority of these different grades of alloys are located in the F3 section, which comprises fuel tanks and airframe," DRDO added.

The indigenous material was developed through collaboration between the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), a DRDO wing and BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL), Hyderabad. The Russian team of NPOM, a joint venture partner for BrahMos, has approved the production processes and the quality control procedures of the alloy.

Earlier this month, DRDO had also announced the development of a solid propellant booster used to achieve supersonic speeds in the cruise stage of the BrahMos.

Technical capabilities A press release today 6/12/2017 from the Indian Ministry of Defence said “the air launched BrahMos missile is a 2.5 ton supersonic air to surface cruise missile” with a range of over 400 kilometers.


This particular missile test signifies a major leap for the BrahMos project and vastly expands India’s anti-access bubble in the Indian Ocean. Fitting this missile on fighter jets enables Indian forces to quickly respond to targets at long-range distances. As such, this capability now acts as both a deterrent to enemy attack and as an offensive weapon.

The mating of the missile with the aircraft, followed by its clean separation during the launch, represents a significant technological achievement by IAF and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) engineers. The development of an air-launched platform makes the BrahMos an ideal aircraft carrier killer that can keep enemy Carrier Strike Group’s (CSG) far from the Indian mainland.
A joint venture between India and Russia, the BrahMos derives its namefrom Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. Previous versions have already been deployed by the Army and Navy. In fact, the anti-ship variant was the first to be tested and subsequently deployed on frontline warships, greatly augmenting the Navy’s first strike capabilities. BrahMos began as an anti-ship warfare missile which means it already has the ability to pick and destroy solitary ships operating in the vast expanses of the ocean. The Army variant designed to strike targets in urban environments with pinpoint accuracy was deployed later.

Both these variants were major force multipliers for the Indian military, but it is the air variant which tips the scales for India in the region in terms of India’s anti-access reach. Going into further detail, the BrahMos’ ability to overcome the defenses of a CSG is significant. Namely, an aircraft carrier is always escorted by a battle group, which creates a layered self-defense bubble around the carrier. As such, a single incoming missile, even at several times the speed of sound, could be shot down by the formidable air defense systems of the CSG. But a volley of multiple BrahMos missiles fired from several Su-30MKI aircraft would be a tall order to intercept. It only takes one successful hit to cripple the carrier and thereby render the CSG meaningless. More than the loss of the carrier capability and carrier’s enormous cost, the blow to morale due to the loss of personnel and national pride would also be crippling. It must be remembered that carrier operation is a significant technological and financial challenge and few nations on this planet maintain them. Implementation and regional implications This context demonstrates BrahMos’ potency. The missile will also contribute to India’s conventional deterrence in that the missile and launch aircraft operate in a highly dense electro-magnetic space and air defense cover.

I can`t imagine what is like when a half ton projectile impacting thin layer skin of a modern day destroyer or frigate at supersonic speeds and then explodes ..

Nagpur firm to make boosters for BrahMos

Pune: A crucial solid propellant booster of BrahMos, the world's fastest supersonic cruise missile, will now be manufactured in India enabling the government to save crores of rupees, a senior official of Defence Research and Development Organisation said on Wednesday.

"The DRDO will sign an agreement of transfer of technology (ToT) with a Nagpur-based private company for mass production of the boosters during a defence industry development meet at Chennai on Thursday. Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman will hand over the ToT to the company," the official said,

The DRDO's city-based High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) has developed the booster of the missile with a close coordination with Russian counterpart. Interestingly, the missile was successfully fired for the first time from Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jet in the Bay of Bengal in November last year.

A senior HEMRL scientist, who didn't wish to divulge his identity, told TOI, "Currently, India imports about 35 boosters annually and the demand for the booster is going to be high as IAF will induct more missiles on its fighter jets in the near future. Since the booster will be indigenously made, the maintenance will be timely as well as cost effective," he said, adding that India spends about 15% of the budget on importing the booster from the Russian counterpart.

HEMRL director K S Murthy said, "We have carried out all the requisite tests of the booster. The results of the tests were positive and validated by Russian experts positively."

India is laying the groundwork to test a high-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, capable of striking targets more than 800 km away, a person familiar with the programme said.

The missile is likely to be tested by the year-end.

India has already extended the range of the three-tonne missile from 290 km to 400 km and successfully test-fired the variant in March 2017. Increasing the missile’s range to 400 km — and now 800 km — became possible after India’s induction into the Missile Technology Control Regime in June 2016.

Prior to that, India was bound by restrictions that limited the range of the missile, which is an Indo-Russian joint venture, to less than 300 km.

“It will be a significant leap forward for the BrahMos project. Air force fighters will be able to attack targets from increased standoff ranges,” said another official tracking the project.




The Defence Research and Development Organisation had announced in February 2017 that a missile variant with a strike range of 800 km was under development.

The configuration of the existing missile is being tweaked to enhance its range to 800 km, he said.

BrahMos variants can be launched from land, air, sea and under water. India successfully launched the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile from a Sukhoi-30 warplane for the first time against a target in the Bay of Bengal in November 2017.

“The Sukhoi has a range of 3,600 km. Arming it with an 800-km range missile will increase its reach tremendously, and even more, considering the option of midair refuelling,” the official said.

The missile’s land and naval variants are already in service. At least two Su-30 squadrons with 20 planes each are likely to be equipped with the air-launch variant BrahMos missile, 500 kg lighter than the land/naval variants.

Two Su-30 jets have been modified by the Nasik division of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to carry the 2.5-tonne missile that flies at nearly three times the speed of sound.

Brahmos range can be extended even beyond 800km though we don't know the credibility of the reporter since he is just a new kid in the block.

The critical part is indigenisation of Brahmos and increasing share of private manufacturers in its making in order to bring down its cost. We need more Brahmos. Currently, only one regiment is deployed per Artillery Division (for three plains strike corps and one mountain strike corps). That means a total of 4 Brahmos regiments, each with 2 Mobile Control Centers and each mobile control center coordinating 6 launchers. We need it to be a lot more. IMHO, we need 2 regiments per Artillery Division. That way, one regiment can stay with command, and one can be attached to the Strike Corps. All in all, we plan to have 5 total Artillery Divisions. So we should aim for 10 Brahmos regiments. And if required, we might further provide Brahmos regiments to Artillery brigades attached to Pivot Corps as well.

800 KM is already planned but it was to come in 3 years. 450 KM already tested and 600 km was planned. 800 KM was to come in next 3 years. If we get 800 KM range, that will be a great punch in our arsenal.
If so, this is fantastic news.

It has been playing on my mind for a long time that we have certain weakness on China focused eastern border.a 800 km capable Brahmos, certainly gives some comfort.

Ofcourse that would depend on how many Brahmos regiments are posted there.
