The government is said to have sat on the transfer of technology that permits India to manufacture Bofors gun in the country.

The contract was always to allow local production, it is because of scam issue, it was never implemented fully. What is the news in this?

Side by side GoI shoud give this contract to make prototypes to private companies also .
Let both of them work , at the end pick which is the best one .
May be a consortium of Tata , L&T , Wipro , Mahindra . They can make it fast .

Nitesh Saar, the news is that the OFB has been given 18 months to use the ToT to come up with 6 prototypes.

Another 18 months wasted by giving OFB a chance .Even though ofb is state owned, but considering the national security the chance should be given to private players also..And select the best from all.It will be better instead of calling new tenders after the 18 months if as usual OFB turned up as clowns

[CT] The Bofors is now owned by BAe Systems (a British Company), they can get handsome money, by getting in license deals or upgrade deals, if I remember, the land system deals is in billions of dollars (close to 7 billion). Good way to keep a major player in EF quite, another one is Germany, they can get in to Sub deal. And here comes the French with Rafale [/CT]

@ nitesh- exactly i too feel this whole thing has been conveniently trumptetd to allow BAe a backdoor entry into the Artillery acquisition. One more thing also i believe We will still need to buy critical electronics and APU''s for the guns from BAe and any upgrade will also need BAe's help!

One more thing, keeping DRDO away, saying that the needs is fulfilled so no need for R&D, keeping the gravy train chugging along. Ajay shukla had pointed out that previous attempts by DRDO to get a request for specs were shot down, seems like history repeating

Either this is what is going to happen. Or DRDO will take 30 years for the development. Definitely something fishy here

Sir! The private companies have to invest heavily in the infrastructure to develop these guns. Than there's R&D, and pay to the workers. All this will require very high Capital.

Once the 400 or 600 guns is delivered than what ? will they close the factories R&D centers and send the workers home ????

I always had a doubt if pvt Industries should invest heavily in defense.

Let OFB make their own gun from the drawing they have and let DRDO and private players make their own, after competition we should award contract for manufacture to winner (has to be domestic). Let they make it in fixed time frame.

The pvt. Companies will roll out prototypes in 15 months while OFB will ask for extension after extension for at least 48 months and till that time there will be no comparative trials as the army will have to wait for OFB to deliver the prototype.

After another 12 months it will be decided to go in for imports based on threat assessment and insolence of technology.

P.s are we still willing to spend money on 18 year old designs. Who will supply the old electronics, APU and other hydraulic power packs. We will start to reinvent the wheel again.

HOW?????
1)LCA
2)Arjun MBT
3) even INSAS gun took 10+ years it seems. Development started in the 80's, first introduced in 1993. Later in 97-98 major gun for the army
